You can get the breakdown on the scoring system right in post #2.

If anything is unclear just ask and I'll elaborate further. =)

Okay.

Memories: What constitutes memories for you? The way I read that at first, it was how well you remember the song and what is brings you back to. But that doesn't make any sense if you have no memories of a song you're just hearing for the first time.

Message: What if the song isn't sending a message?
Lyrics: What if the song has no lyrics?
Top 100 Bonus: What if the song has no accolades?

Leaning points: So you're saying...if you're really confident a song is a 6.9, it gets a higher ranking than if you're reluctantly giving it a 7.0? What if you're unconfident that you might be lowballing it?

Hey @Snake5555555555

Since you are a Handguns fan I was wondering if you could answer a question for me. I did a quick search online but I didn't really see anything that answers it for me.

On the Life Lessons album art I noticed a "VI" and a "VIII" on the buildings to the left and right respectively. I didn't see the roman numeral "VII" on the house in the middle but then I realized that the second L in "Life Lessons" is an upside down 7. Is there any meaning to this?

Obviously I'm fixed on the number 7 so it makes me curious if there is a deeper meaning to the artwork.

It makes more sense if you see the first album cover, for Angst.
QDCb1fl

If you notice, it's the same house and the same kid. I don't think there's anything to do with the numbers really, it just ties into the album's themes of growing up and learning things the hard way, losing the innocence and freedoms that youth tends to offer.

It took me over a year to compile this list and there were several new songs that I had never heard that I listened to through certain events over the course of the year that I will now remember in the same manner. Basically the score allowed for the scoring of points up until the rankings were finalized. Or in simpler terms. New memories are just as valid as Old memories.

Message: What if the song isn't sending a message?

This also works as an interpretation score as well. It could come down to how I interpret what I perceive as a message as well. Obviously if I don't see a valid message it'll score low no matter what.

Lyrics: What if the song has no lyrics?

Another interpretation window here. Have you ever listened to an instrumental and heard the message? Gotta be open minded, but there are a number of songs that I can totally hear what the composer/s might be trying to say.

Top 100 Bonus: What if the song has no accolades?

The unfortunate thing here is it'd be screwed. This though, I put a lot of effort into ensuring that I spent an equal amount of time searching for those would be bonus points. It certainly isn't a perfect way to score since it's still going to fall to some interpretation of the sum of things I find. This is especially true where there is no Billboard ranking at all as that was not the only factor that could boost the bonus score.

Leaning points: So you're saying...if you're really confident a song is a 6.9, it gets a higher ranking than if you're reluctantly giving it a 7.0? What if you're unconfident that you might be lowballing it?

Not quite. I gave hard scores for each category. It'd either be a 4, 5 or 6 for example. If I wasn't sure about the 4 I'd give it a 4.1, if the 5 could be a 4 or a 6 I gave it a 5.2 and if I was confident about the 6 I'd give it a 6.3

Does that answer everything well enough?

The 5th Madonna song to appear so far... and getting closer to the songs of hers that I like the best. This song was originally written for a friend of Madonna's but she would end up deciding to use it on and to promote the "Desperately Seeking Susan" soundtrack. This however never came to pass as her friend disputed the reclaiming of the song and Madonna just kept it anyway and later released the song on a re-issue of Like A Virgin. The song itself consists of many parts and electronic manipulation including double tracks and overdubs. You can actually hear Madonna singing over herself in the chorus if you listen closely. The song must not have made too many appearances in concert since she couldn't physically sing over herself on stage.. oh wait unless she sang over a recording but then isn't she just audibly lip-syncing herself at that point? Not sure how she did it if she did since I've never been to a Madonna concert myself. Hmm, well she must have had a way or simply cut out the double track because the internet says she performed this song at most of her concerts.

I got time for one more ranking so we'll dive into another song from this decade. We are changing gears here considerably though going from the usual Pop to a piece that was actually created for a popular film. Some of you may recognize the theme but it is from and was created for Christopher Nolan's film Inception hence the album it appears on. I'm most definitely a big fan of instrumentals though as I generally listen to a few while reading my graphic novels. You throw on the headphones and if the pairing is just right, you can sink so much deeper into the stories you read.. or I should say, that's how it is for me. Hans Zimmer has made countless Scores for the film industry and has always been a favorite composer of mine and this might be near the very top of his work that I appreciate which is why I didn't want to leave it out. I knew when doing this ranking though that instrumentals would have a tough hill to climb based on the selected criteria but I'm not too disappointed in the placement here honestly. I personally feel like the song is epic in a way but I understand that it isn't the usual go to when folks think about music. I'm pretty much satisfied that I can at least share my interest here.

I've heard this band before as I'm pretty sure one of their songs is somewhere in my Guitar Hero collection (I have all of the games released on PS2). Anyway, I do like the instrumentation here but I am thrown way off by the vocals. The way the singer sings doesn't sound quite right for the song imo. I honestly think it's a bit too shriek-ish if that makes any sense. I haven't heard very much of Lacuna Coil's music to know if that is a normal thing for the band or just happenstance for this song. I wouldn't say that this is the best song on the album here but the album actually fared well enough to be listed on Rock Hard's 500 Greatest Rock & Metal albums of all time list. Rock Hard is a magazine in case anyone was curious. I don't have much else for input here though unfortunately.

I feel like I should like this song better than I do but what I've boiled my interest down to is only a couple segments of the song. The whole thing together just sounds a bit too high pitched for my ears. There are certain decibels that become an annoyance factor for me when listening to music. In this case I honestly can't tell if it's the music or the vocals but I know the chorus bugs the hell out of me (which is equally both so I still can't tell what the problem is). On the radio it isn't so terrible but one of the ways I wanted to commit to this ranking was to only cast judgement on the music in an unfiltered way so that there were no outside elements that could change my opinion. This means that I only rank stuff while wearing headphones. In some cases it hasn't changed my opinion much but in a lot of other cases I can really narrow down how much and why I enjoy a particular song or don't. As for the song, it actually set a record for the band making them the 3rd artists to have simultaneous top 5 hits in Billboard's entire history with the other two being The Beatles and Elvis Presley. We do at least have a new genre here bringing us to a total of 102 explored genres so far.

This song shares a title with another song that I consider a classic by Billy Joel which will appear later in the ranking. If comparing the two were a thing here, this song would tank in comparison simply on my preference for Billy Joel. I mean, clearly it doesn't compare anyway since I'm actually dropping this song far sooner but I mentioned it because I want to be honest about my bias whenever I can. I'm not too much of a Bruno Mars fan but the guy seemed to pop up almost everywhere this decade. He's been a featured artist in over 30 different acts at this point even going uncredited in some cases. What is interesting about this fact is that he did a lot of that before getting signed for a solid record deal. Motown had actually had the opportunity to nuture his career before all of that but failed to do it properly and because of some unknown dispute with will.i.am that contract ended. I'm sure they are kicking themselves now though as he has been quite a successful artist since he was picked up by Atlantic Records. Even after all of that though, I feel like he still has a lot of fame and fortune ahead of him given that he is arguably one of the best vocalists to come out of this decade.

Another Led Zeppelin classic comes your way! I used to love this album quite a bit and actually wore out a cassette tape back in the day from repeated play. It bummed me out for a minute until I realized that I had a couple copies in my cassette collection. A buddy of mine actually introduced me to the album in high school even though I had heard a few Zeppelin songs via my older brother's interest in music growing up. It was at that point that I became a serious fan of the band though. I've got at least 3 more favorites still yet to come in this ranking for any other fans out there. I could've added this entire album to this ranking tbh but decided to pick and choose so that I wasn't over-selecting one band over another... although admittedly there are a couple of my most favorite bands (yet to be ranked) that got more than a few entries here. Can anyone guess what one of those bands might be?

To start I'll warn you that I had to update the link to this song an unusual amount of times so if the link that is posted becomes fruitless as so many other "The Who" videos have since I've started this ranking (like seriously who the f*** is taking down all the videos!!!) then just resort to the version down below by Fred Durst. It's better anyway. If I could have, I would have just went with Limp Bizkits version here since it would have scored considerably higher than the original. The song was originally written by Pete Townshend and started out as a prayer presumably because of teachings by his spiritual leader at the time. I absolutely love the main guitar riff and it is actually quite easy to learn compared to most tunes. I have spent a bit of time trying to learn the whole song here and there but simply cannot sing while I play at this point so it doesn't sound as epic when I attempt to play it. The song would eventually become Limp Bizkits only #1 hit ever and oddly enough was the last major hit the band has had since. I mean, if you're gonna end your career you might as well end it on a high note am I rite?

Best Version IMO:

Oh no, it's a mini-assault on the 70's! (Just noticed that this is 3 in a row and there is another coming up). We are getting ever closer to the Top 100 70's songs in the ranking as well. At this point it might be safe to assume that'll be the first decade to get there anyway. It might disappoint some folks that I'm dropping this song here, nevermind the fact that it's by Queen. The song is in and of it's self quite perfectly harmonious in the best way like any work that you'd call a masterpiece and debatably one of the best in Queens catalog but... eh. I may have heard it a bit too much during my brothers Queen fix of 1983-ish. Even though the 80's were coming head on my brother recessed a bit and spent a lot of time listening to the 70's. I can almost hear some of this stuff in my dreams because he liked to leave the radio on all night. He claimed it was the only way he could sleep and I gotta be honest, I kinda get why the tone of this song could be relaxing.

Here we go with another tune I'd dub "Jukebox Rock". I mean, who hasn't seen this one in a Jukebox before? I'd go as far to say that this just might be one of the most common tunes found in one. It's amazing how catchy the beat is and perfectly "Hard Rock" to the point that it's essential to any night at the bar but on the other side of that coin, I'm willing to bet there are many many folks who have heard this song too many times. I kinda feel that way myself which is why it clearly lands here in the "meh... these songs are ok" block of the ranking. It's the only song I think I've ever heard from this band though but would you believe it's actually from their 5th album!? It is certainly the only song to appear here in this ranking despite that fact. And just in case anyone doesn't know, the entire song is all a euphemism about taking the time to f*** your lover in an overwhelming appreciation for sex. You can also play this in Guitar Hero if you ever get into that series. (Or maybe you already know that because you have lol)

Holy nostalgia trip right here... for me anyway. I had recently split with a girl around the time this song was released and every time I hear it I think of her. It's a good thing my wife isn't reading these rankings though because it'd most definitely ruin the song for her. Wanna know the funny part here? She picked this song for the ranking although honestly it would have wound up here anyway as I most certainly would have selected it. Is it a bad thing when a song can invoke certain feelings from memories about another girl when you've been married for 16 years? lol. Damn. I love my wife and kids but that is a girl I wonder about. If there is ever an invention that allows us to travel to parallel universes I think I'd like to see how that one would have played out had it not ended the way it did in this one. :/ Unfortunately the message score tanks this song though. It's overly simple and rather redundant. Lenny Kravitz obviously wonders if he'll ever see an ex again. This song actually gave Kravitz his 3rd consecutive Grammy Award for Best Rock Vocal Performance in '01.

I'm not really the jolly traditional kind of person to get goosebumps from this sort of music but I've heard the expression from a few folks before. I won't spend too much time here since Christmas music generally annoys me but a couple of song facts for you real quick... This was and still is to this day Mariah Careys best selling single even becoming the 11th best selling single of all time. The song has earned over a whopping $60 million in royalties and that isn't counting regular sales and whatnot. The song was eventually made into a ringtone and became the first ringtone in history to become certified platinum. Just this past christmas it actually set a single day record on spotify having been streamed 10.82 million times! Wow.

I might catch some flac for this one but I gotta be honest, I never really cared for it. I don't even really listen to Prince music much at all for that matter. The song had a resurgence among listeners recently in 2016 after Prince's death and is considered to be one of the best in his career. Originally the song was supposed to be a Country song and was to feature Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks. Unfortunately she was overwhelmed by a 10 minute demo of the song that had been sent to her and she backed out of the collaboration. Prince decided to do something with the song anyway and after a few rehearsals the band was able to put most of what you hear now in arrangement. The song would become a staple in concert and was played on almost every tour for the rest of Prince's career. I guess the lyric represents facing the end of the world and figurative "blood" in the sky during the firestorm because Red + Blue = Purple of course but I'm not sure on the finer details of that explanation which is a statement by Prince himself allegedly. Anyway, yeah... not all that big of a Prince fan here which is why this is the only song of his that you'll see in this ranking.

It's really funny to me how each decade carries with it a specific sound that is almost unmistakeable. Remember the 90's? It's hard to believe that it's been 20 years since this song came out already isn't it? I remember having the hots for Katie Holmes around the time this came out promoting the movie (Dusturbing Behavior) that she was in. Who didn't have the hots for her in the late 90's though am I rite? Anyway, I'm pretty sure these guys were just a one-hit wonder since I cannot for the life of me think of anything else that they've done. Good thing I've got the internet right here though... hold on... oh yeah, they were definitely a one-hit wonder band. The only other song they've ever made that gained any popularity at all was "She's so Huge" which is pretty terrible. Trust me, don't even bother listening to it, it's not worth the time.

Ah yes, it was the summer of '02 and I was knee deep in all the Nu Metal I could ever want. I remember distinctly blasting this tune a bunch on my long drive into the nearest city from where I lived an hour away. At the time I was working at 3 businesses and I would spend 2 or 3 days at a time just bouncing back from one job to the other while I stayed in town to do so. It was single life at it's finest. No one could tell me what to do, I put a ton of money in the bank and only had myself to care for. This was quite the anthem for me at the time. Those were the days... lol. I actually almost blew some speakers in my car though and I'm surprised I never got pulled over tbh. I was basically a bass box driving down the road only it was usually at night and through the countryside to get home. The loud music often helped me not fall asleep at the wheel after working 60-70 hours in a row which happened more than a few times. I can only imagine what it sounded like with me passing by at 2:00am. Not sure how often it was used but I know that this was once used as a theme to Wrestlemania. It's a great song but it hasn't aged well (or I haven't aged well I should say). It's rather piercing for my ears nowadays.

Well s***. Ignore that retcon on the 90's list. It wasn't a matter of everything being misplaced by 1 ranking after all.

That duplicate ranking was actually supposed to be:

256th Ihate - Phantasma Del Mar - The Aquabats - 1997

...which leaves everything else exactly where it should be before I messed with it.

First off, no one needs to give me s*** for including this song. Yes I know it was created by a piece of s*** pedophiliac but that obviously isn't what I'm promoting here. If anyone grew up in the 90's they probably remember this song as a significant part of their childhood which is kinda f***ing weird. Even through his music, R Kelly was touching children. Sorry that was a tasteless joke and probably too soon. Anyway, I was a teenager at the time and along with the release of Space Jam this song was a big hit. It became something of an R & B phenomenon. Too bad it's been reduced to nothing but a pedophile's anthem. Smh. What a waste.

A decent tune from the 70's. Not quite in the Top 100 here but it's arguably worthy tbh considering that it's the only song of theirs in 11 albums up to this point that had made it to #1 on the charts. It's a bit more "oldie" Soft Rock than I am into but I've occasionally let it play all the way through when it pops up on the radio. Generally you won't hear this one though unless you are listening to a station that offers 70's tunes or is strictly Soft Rock or something. I haven't heard this on the mainstream radio since the 80's. Despite this being the only #1 for the band, I still have other favorites yet to be ranked that I consider better tunes. One of the things I found interesting here is that Stevie Nicks had written the song and presented it to the band before recording and they didn't receive it well at all. Reluctantly for a couple of the members they recorded it anyway and good thing they did as like I said, it'd become their only #1 hit of their careers. Honestly though it's no surprise that the band was iffy about the tune as literally all of the band's members were struggling emotionally during the whole recording of the album this appears on.

Oh man. Had this ranking been completed in the early 2000's I might have had this considerably higher as that was pretty much about the time I had my AC/DC fix. I had gotten a stack of cd's from a co-worker who was cleaning out their locker on one of their last days with the business I was working for and this was in the middle of the pile. The guy was actually going to dump them into the trash along with everything else he emptied from his locker. I never turn down free s*** so I took the handfull of cd's apathetically but then ended up pretty much listening to the album for like a month straight. I honestly played it so much that it might have made some folks nauseous any time they heard AC/DC lol. Unfortunately, that time spent appreciating the album really hurt my opinion of it in the long run. As I "begin" to age I have become less receptive to the sharper vocals and tones that the band is known for. I still appreciate them for the impact they've had on the Hard Rock genre and obviously they are legends but AC/DC might go down as a band that I once listened to in my youth as opposed to something I'll listen to until I wither into dust.

I put the link to this version here because that ending is hilarious as hell. :P Anyway, here is another tune from Aerosmith that just couldn't quite make the top of the charts. I find this odd really because this song might just be one of their most overplayed songs on the radio imo. It was however their first breakthrough hit so I guess that seems right and the album did at least break the Top 10 in 1975. The song continues to be one of the biggest earners for the band and has had over 3 million downloads. The song was allegedly about a bitterness between a couple of the band member's wives.

Interesting... I guess Madonna was originally selected to do the vocals in this song but then Elizabeth Fraser also became an option. The 3 band members voted and Fraser won which actually left Madonna disappointed since she had worked with the band before on "I Want You". I can't say I'm a big fan of Trip Hop tbh and this might be the only other tune here along with the previously ranked tune by Michael Jackson in that genre. The genre doesn't break the Top 800 but I don't think it's the worst performing genre here. The video here just happens to be a bit trippy coincidentally with the singing fetus and all. The song appears in a number of tv shows but the only one I care about is in the 21st season of The Simpsons. There are some other remixes and covers but nothing that I would consider better than this version. That unfortunately is the last of your 90's nominations Alanna but you still remain at the top of the Nominator list so no harm done atm.

Oh Man we have made it to lower tier Tom Petty. Honestly nothing of his is Low tier imo but unfortunately here with the stacking of 1,300 songs in over 100 genres of music it just becomes difficult for Rock or Classic Rock to challenge my favorite genres. "Nothing against you Tom but I gotta start dropping your songs here" R.I.P.. For sure it bummed me out to hear of Tom's passing in '17 but didn't someone once say somewhere that you can't be a Legend unless you're dead? IMHO he was a Legend far before he'd write his last song though. I grew up hearing and loving new hits from Tom Petty virtually the entire span of their careers. This song here was once a favorite of mine but the love wanes a bit from nostalgic to scientific and neither outlook is the same type of appreciation. Nowadays I can go on fits of repeated listens then suddenly not want to hear the music again for months. If anyone is curious though, this song is actually about a night when Tom "got lucky". It was a girl named Cindy and come to find out she f***ed him then dumped him. Instead of getting torn up about it, Tom joyfully lamented the one night stand and wrote a song about it.

I dunno here... I feel like the vocals fit some of the time but sound completely awkward and out of place for the rest of the song. It could be that I'm rather unfamiliar with the vocalist but hearing it for the first time leaves me thinking them to be slightly amateurish. Is this how they normally sound? I'm not really familiar with any of their work tbh. I think the beat is ok but the percussion is rather persisitent in a way that the sound waves stress the crap out of my temples leaving me with a faint headache after listening. That could be my headphones I suppose but this is the only song really in the entire lineup of songs that does this and I've listened to it around 7 or 8 times so far. The music overall is kind of jarring to the senses but at least it's not as bad as all of the Metalcore that Bane nominated.

You know... I'd honestly consider giving my left nut to be able to play the guitar as charismatically and harmoniously as this dude. Such a great tune here. If you are a Guitar Hero fan you might undoubtedly recognize this tune from Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and for good reason. I actually felt pretty bad a** just being able to bust this one out in the game. One of the biggest reasons why I love the series is because you can really get a feel for what it would be like to jam out to such a tune. I could never nail it down on Expert but I scored a high 80% most of the time. The score ultimately suffers because of no interpretable lyrical representation imo and I'm not sure about where the message would be either. It does sound like Eric just plugged in his guitar and riffed one out intending for the music to speak for itself. I can only imagine the high after putting the guitar down after playing this for real. *Dreamz...

Of all the songs in the final tier, this was easily the most playable of the bunch. You just had to get a good groove and you could jam out the whole thing. Not sure if I FC'ed it or not, because I was not known for my consistency, but I very well may have. Definitely could not even come close to saying that about Rain Blood.

In with their 5th song to appear in the ranking is Aerosmith. They have actually just dethroned themselves in the Hard Rock genre knocking out Sweet Emotion which oddly enough is a better song than this one if I were gonna choose off the cuff imo. Why is this one higher then? Well... that is the ups and downs of a detailed breakdown of song in the manner my score system delivers. There are minor differences in the score between this one and Sweet Emotion but what pulls out the lead here is a better Top 100 score for this tune. I'm not sure why this did better on the charts but I don't think it should have really. Ah I think I see why... apparently this song had a resurgence in the 80's when it was covered by Run DMC.

Have I said before that I was never a really big fan of the band Kiss? Yes... ok, well I'm gonna say it again. I'd have to say the biggest reason for this was that my oldest brother was such a big fan of theirs growing up. I didn't think too much of it back then but he clearly obsessed enough to drive me away for good. I was more interested in New Wave 80's at the time anyway so I wasn't really leaving my comfort zone when I was still exploring that wonderful genre. I could never understand their gimmick and flair as a kid either which I'm sure didn't help and tbh I kinda recall thinking that they were pro wrestlers or something since my brother had their posters littered on the wall with a bit of wrestling memorabilia at the time. The song would eventually become Kiss's 2nd song to sell over a million copies earning them a Gold Record in 1979. According to the internet here, these guys played this song at nearly every single concert since. I guess that is bound to happen when you have so few hits as it is I guess. They really don't have a very big list of solid hits imo.

Eh... this is only the 2nd Reggae Fusion song to pop up and I'm not so sure I even care for the genre tbh. I mean... sure the music isn't terrible but I don't get anything out of it. It doesn't thrill me enough to become a fan but I guess it's ok because it doesn't really annoy me enough to shut off the radio or change the station. It's very mediocre to my taste is all I'm saying. This was actually the first big hit for the band off of their debut album. Not sure if they've had another since because I didn't care enough to dig further into their history. I only do that for stuff I really like anyway and since there are only like 4 people even looking at this topic as far as I can tell I didn't think it was necessary to provide a history lesson for every song. I do happen to know though that this was in the top 10 best selling songs of 2014 since I've looked at that list a couple times and they may have even won an award too. This was selected as filler for the 10's list since I didn't have enough favorites to fill the list myself.

I gotta be honest. This was far more impressive the first time I ever heard it. It really does sound like a popular kind of tune for the most part. It's got a killer backtrack and is catchy as hell and the vocals aren't really that bad. Unfortunately though... with enough playbacks it really does start to turn into repetitive noise. You are listening to a sexy gay Russion duo that are... not lesbians??? I guess it's just an act? Uh, well who knows. I'm too lazy to dig deeper but I guess it was their thing for awhile. It wasn't uncommon for the two to be performing on stage in some sort of wet t-shirt contest as far as I can tell based on the number of nipple revealing concert images I can easily find via google. They're kinda alright I guess. The song itself was a chart topper in a number of countries even breaking into the US Billboards Top 100 list which was and maybe still is the only time that a Russian act has ever accomplished such a feat. Of course as you would expect here and especially in Russia, the song stirred up much controversy over it's underage and suggestive lesbian themes upon it's release. Nowadays, I don't think anyone really gives a s***.

Uh oh, this is gonna upset Snake. It was soooo hard to let this drop here I gotta tell you. I kept wanting to fudge the scores to push this higher but I really felt this aching in my conscience that wouldn't permit me to do that. I will say right off that the intro to this song is by and far one of the greatest acoustic guitar riffs I have ever heard and it actually is disappointing that there isn't a full song full of it. I really do appreciate Metallica but have fallen a bit over the years from diehard fan to casual listener. I always love the classics but my niche interest is right around Re-Load to S & M which you'll get plenty evidence of later in the ranking ;P. I am quite unfamiliar with pretty much everything after Newsted left the band for reasons. There are loads of great sounds here but in the complete form of Thrash Metal it just doesn't sustain my interest all that much especially as I age. It's kind of a funny coincidence but this ranking brings the total 80's performance score up to a 4.666. Spooky. (Four Horseman reference) Unfortunately for you azuarc, your 80's nominations are now all dropped. You are still in 3rd place in the Nominator challenge up to this point at least.

Say what? ...a Britney Spears song trouncing a Metallica classic. WTF. This ranking has lost all credibility! lol. The interesting thing here is it actually was within my ability to place this lower than Battery since they both have the same overall score and it'd sort of be fine if I stacked the ties how I wanted. However, I wanted to be less controlling than that when it came to my personal preferences and I didn't set out to do this ranking with the thought that I was going to pick and choose what I liked. As I said before I wanted to set some systematic rules that I'd follow to give me some outside of the box perspective on just what I have selected for this ranking. What boils down the decision in this case vs. Battery is simple. Just look at that Top 100 score. This tune dominated the charts for a few weeks as opposed to it's competitor. It's fine though. This isn't that terrible of a song, it's catchy and you gotta love that Half-Baked reference in the intro to the video. I'm still totally gonna do that someday somewhere in some sucky social situation that I really want to escape. F*** you, F*** you, F*** you, You're Cool, F*** you! I'm out! :P

I've got a couple of U.F.O. favorites but surprisingly this wasn't one of them. It's a decent song of course obviously as it outmatched over 400 songs in this ranking but... just isn't enough of a classic for me to get excited about. The instrumentation is very poetic in a way as each riff in the song is blended seamlessly. I don't find the song too memorable unfortunately but that may just be because I haven't heard it a ton. The solo 7 minutes in is kick a** and might be my favorite part of the song tbh. I don't know a whole lot about the band really but I do know that they struggled to make hits. These guys are more of an acquired interest but do appeal to a fair range of Hard Rock fans. (Kind of a short write-up here but I'm trying to beat the purge on both boards that I'm hosting this ranking on...)

Write-Up:
This song mistakingly and frequently pops up on 60's hits radio stations in my listening experience and it was always bound to happen. I mean, just listen to it. It is quite comparable to early CCR and similar Swamp Rock from the decade. Of course the band has a bit of work that actually was in the 60's and perhaps even this song was inspired by the decade but it wasn't released until almost 2 years into the 70's. According to the internet the vocal style of John Fogerty was an inspiration and indeed CCR laid on some influence. Interestingly enough the single was released the very spring that Creedence Clearwater Revival broke up. Not a bad homage to the band then in that case if you ask me. The Hollies were a British band and this song topped the charts in a couple of countries at the time. For anyone that is a Phish fan you might be interested to know (or perhaps you already do lol) that this was the first song the band ever covered/played at their very first concert. They would eventually play it again at their 15th and 20th anniversary concerts as well. Alan Clarke who was the lead singer here had actually left the band after this was released and oddly enough returned to the band in the summer of '73 partly due to the success of this song.

Meh... not exactly a favorite of mine here but a song that I have heard many many times. I honestly couldn't tell you from memory anything else that this band has produced. Hell, the most memorable thing about this song that I do recall is that it was covered by Marilyn Manson. It's not really a better version imo but still the most memorable thing about this song for me. The funny thing here is that it is a cover of the original song written by Ed Cobb in 1964 who had given it to Gloria Jones to record. Soft Cell took only a day and a half to produce the version you hear here. They did try a couple other versions where they play with the tempo but ultimately it was their first attempt that they'd release to the public. VH1 selected Soft Cell's version here for their list of the 100 Greatest One Hit Wonder songs of all time firmly placing it in 5th. The beat might be familiar to some Rhianna fans as she heavily borrowed bits and pieces for her song S.O.S. in 2006.

Here we have another covered tune from the 60's. It was covered many times but I really have no specific favorite tbh. This version is the most memorable for me but I do want to point out that Adam Sandler (although never confirmed) clearly borrowed heavily from the composition of the song for the back half of the Chanukah song. The first Joan Jett song to make an appearance here though which is interesting for me since I kinda prefer this over anything else they've done (and this isn't the only Joan Jett song that will appear in the ranking). It is however, the 2nd highest charting song that Joan Jett and the Blackhearts had in their careers. The first time I recall ever hearing this song was in the show The Wonder years. It might be sad or just how old I'm getting but that show stands in a significant number of memories that shaped my youth. It has appeared in tons of other media including shows, commercials, movies and there is even a reference to the song in one of my favorite games of all time; Fallout 3. (Eulogy Jones has two bodyguards named Crimson and Clover)
