Song: "Without You"
Band: Badfinger
Album: No Dice

Genre: Soft Rock

Write-Up:
This song is a classic for sure but I find it interesting that most people I know are only familiar with Mariah Carey's version which is the best imo. Interestingly enough though, her version isn't even a direct cover of the original but a more tweaked cover of Harry Nilsson's version from 1972 which is also good just not my favorite. Another thing I find interesting is that this was a quality song from a quality band that wouldn't even see true success until the show Breaking Bad came around to use their "Baby Blue" song many years later (actually included in this ranking). I guess this tune was even among Paul McCartney's favorites as he dubbed it "the killer song of all time" in an interview with VH1 in 2009. Speaking of that... a creepy fact about the song is that Pete Ham and Tom Evans who are Badfinger basically both ended up killing themselves later on over disputed royalties for this song. This was especially true in Evans' case where he suffered dire legal and financial issues. The financial impact wasn't as great on Ham as his bandmate but his resulting death is up for debate whether it was connected to the fall of the band after Evans' death. If that is true then the song would be something of an Ode to Tom Evans for Pete Ham I suspect.

Best Version IMO:

You do?

I don't tend to be attracted to square faces personally but that is why they say there is someone for everyone I guess.

What do you consider to be her best feature?

I thought Nilsson was the originator of the song. Interesting.

{ 857th Place } [80's][ 182nd Place]
Song: "Papa Don't Preach"
Band: Madonna
Album: True Blue
---{ 1986 }---

Write-Up:
Almost getting to some of my favorite Madonna tunes here. This one is ok but doesn't remind me of anything significant growing up which is one of the ways I like to measure how impactful a song actually is. Generally there is always at least some sort of event I might recall from my life when hearing anything that I may have heard before but in this case I really don't have anything. I kinda blocked most of the 6th and 7th years of age from memory due to a few unstable events that took place in my life so it might be a reason why I don't connect with this tune but I'm not sure. Maybe it actually wasn't played on the radio as much perhaps. This song was within Madonna's first 10 or so singles to go to #1 I think but I'm not so sure I'd have ever put it that high on the list when reviewing the rest of her work up until that time. By this point though Madonna had become a superstar as popular as Prince and Michael Jackson as well as a common sex symbol for the masses so it wasn't too difficult for her songs to become popular. I don't know for certain because I don't know if the info I'm looking at is legit but the song is supposed to be a message about anti-abortion. I've never realized that even up to this point but I guess I've also never really taken the time to listen to the lyrics.

{ 856th Place } [70's][ 123rd Place] @Raka_Putra
Song: "Kings & Queens"
Band: Aerosmith
Album: Draw The Line
---{ 1977 }---

Write-Up:
The 3rd Aerosmith tune to make a presence here and a decent one tbh. Steven Tyler often lamented this tune as one of their better works and it was played at nearly every concert in the late 70's and 80's. They played it so much in fact that they eventually would get sick of it and drop it from their set list until the mid 00's where it was revived and once again became a regular expectation at their live shows to this day. That's neat in a way because I have a few favorites that I once loved then hated and now love to hear again so I can easily understand how this is possible. As disappointing as the dedicated Guitar Hero game was of theirs, I was super thrilled when I had unlocked this song after beating the final song of the game. I played it a few dozen times before I eventually moved on to another Guitar Hero game. It's probably my favorite song on the album when I think about it though. It would eventually get covered at some point but there isn't anyone that has done it better than Aerosmith imo.

I really like the intro to this song and it's kind of bittersweet because I really expect much more from the rest of the song by hearing it yet I don't really feel like it measures up no matter how much I wish it did. It's kind of a common thing for me to find certain parts of songs that I wish were more developed but this song mostly feels like that imo. I feel like it could have been way better or maybe the arrangement could have been more supportive of itself. I mean that's the way I sense the music but it doesn't necessarily mean the song is poorly arranged just that it doesn't catch my attention the way it is. I do feel like the song is way longer than it needs to be. I was already done with the song around 7:00 minutes in the first time I listened to it which btw, this ranking is the first experience I've ever had with the song. I do like the Nu Metal genre a decent amount of the time but I have certain expectations that possibly keep me from enjoying it as much as a major fan would. Nu Metal of course can become difficult to listen to after some time because of the aggressive nature of the music imo but some of my all time favorite songs are from the genre. I have kind of been poking around lostprophets other work but nothing else feels as significant as this tune yet. If you had any other specific recommendations for this band I'd love to hear them azuarc. Btw, sorry you lost another nomination.

Man this song... I honestly went back and forth on it a few times. It's a really fun beat to listen to especially if you dig the Piano play in the background but... it's sort of on a repetitious loop that can become tiresome. I don't exactly want to say that there isn't any variety in the rhythm but it is kinda limited in scope. The song is written about the experience of cruising down a lengthy road in Illinois that I guess connects a good part of the state on the south-western coast of Lake Michigan. Many speculate that the song is literally about the drug LSD and who knows, given some of the lyrics it could certainly be interpreted that way but I like to believe it's both. Just imagine trippin' on all of those lights in the big city of Chicago at night (seen in the video) as you cruise on by although I don't think driving at night on any kind of psychotropic is a great idea for obvious reasons but if you had a designated driver it could be fun. Marvel fans may notice that there is an edited version of this song featured on the soundtrack for Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2.

For what it's worth, this is the final track on the album. It's not really clear if the second half is part of the song or just a hidden track. Would you have liked it better if it had ended around 4:20? (Actually, looking at Wikipedia's track listing, it has Sway at 4:25 and the rest of the track is just called Outro.)

I like the lostprophets a good bit, but they don't have anything that sounds like Sway. Their first album, The Fake Sound of Progress, is really raw and unstructured. From Start Something, I like Burn Burn. A personal favorite that I doubt anyone else will like is from the third, called For All These Times. The fourth never had a US release. What I consider the fourth album, Weapons, didn't have anything amazing. I guess the lead track, Bring Em Down, was the highlight there.

And then the band promptly broke up because the lead singer was jailed for pedophilia. I don't know all the details on that, but I know it was not uncommon for him to bring underage fans back to his room after concerts. Unfortunately, that connection often makes people run away from the music, which has absolutely nothing to do with his proclivities.

FIrst and foremost, I kinda feel awful that I don't have this higher on the list because I know that it's a beautiful song that actually rocks but once again my ears are bugged out on repeated plays. Not sure if there is a word for it but the more I listen to this, the more it kind of slows down in tempo in my head. It slows it in such a way to make me think it kinda sappy tbh. Or I guess in a more simple description... it kinda sounds whiny as hell. Is that normal or do I have an obvious aversion to the lead singer? Anyway, I do like to hear it sparingly and no more than once every so often. Hinder isn't a terrible band when it comes to making decent riffs as I've heard a bit of their other music. The problem they have for the most part is that they don't have enough of those riffs and often don't link them together well enough imo.

I love the energy in this song but i'm not 100% sure where it loses me. I know I didn't feel compelled to bump it any higher even though I think it might have all the elements worthy of a bump. I try to base my judgement on whether or not I'd regret not bumping a tune and in this case I won't regret dropping it one bit. It's a cool song but eventually it becomes noise too easily if the mood isn't right. I remember the song being a big hit when it came out. It was around the time that my 2nd son was born come to think of it. Anyway, not a lot else to say here unfortunately.

Another great song that it's arrangement actually bugs me. The part that I don't like is pretty much all of the chorus which is kind of funny when you think about the fact that I just called it a great song. The reason for that is because I really like the verse portion that starts at :54 seconds in. I really wish the entire song was like that so I figure it'd be a great song if it were. I dunno... it's a decent mix I guess if you listen for the progressive qualities and the Metal isn't that bad. This is however the 2nd appearance from the band in the ranking with still more of their work to come. Which of their other songs also made the cut? You'll have to stick around to find out! :P

Kicking off the next block of 50 songs is sort of a surprise as in I'm surprised it didn't drop sooner. It kind of scored evenly across the board which is why it's here I guess but I think there were quite a few songs ranked already that I like better than this one. I do like Smashing Pumpkins a bit but there are only 4 or 5 of their songs that I'd even consider of the highest quality. If it were not nominated, I doubt this song would have made the list. When I listen to it I just don't feel like the song is going anywhere melodically tbh. All that said, the song does still carry the classic melancholic vibes Billy Corgan is known for creating. I can't help but feel a little bit of a nostalgic interest for the 90's while I listen to this as well.

First thing I'll note here about the Album as far as the ranking is concerned. It's kinda different than what we've seen so far in that it's an album that was originally released as an itune exclusive. There are still some other digital albums mentioned later on in the ranking but I don't think there is anything else that was released via itunes first. This song blew up the radio in the spring of '15 and what an annoying spring that would be with countless other Pop songs dropping left and right. Hell practically the entire 2010's decade has been nothing but pop after pop after even some more pop. Bleh. There is a reason I call it the Dance, Dance, infested generation. Not to give any blatant spoilers here but I much prefer the 00's when Nu Metal and Pop Punk ruled the radio. This song was chosen and placed in this ranking by none other than, ...you guessed it! My wife. >_> She really had a great time filling all the filler rankings with this crap. Wasn't that nice of her? :P

Oh man, I used to love this song back when I was confused about my sexuality. Hhahaha! <<real lol] Maybe I was confused about alot of things back then and I really did like the song but nothing is more confusing than the video to this song. Holy s*** that kid. Is that baby Carrot Top? Rod is supposed to be singing to his kid here and the adoration the kid gives him sure seems tight especially when the kid lovingly caresses Stewart's face mid chorus but uh... then I read something creepy. It's not even his friggin kid lol. A bit too strange of a role for any child movie star if you ask me. If I were the parent I would of been a little bit more concerned of how close Stewart was holding him. Is Rod Stewart a pedophile? No, I'm not saying that exactly but um... How long and how far do you think they had to drive around to record this weird a** video? I wonder what the kid thought the whole time? And why the f*** didn't he use one of his own kids in the video? His oldest son was 7 at the time. That would have made more sense to me and not been so creepy. Anyway, that was kinda way off track for the song itself but it's aged well over time at least and can be a calming song if you are into Soft Rock.

I don't have too much commentary on this one for you but let's see if I can offer you something interesting about the song via the internet. Well that's lame... about the only thing relevant is that the song represents the 10 years the band spent together bouncing around to different towns/gigs. Damn. They were doing gigs for 10 years before finally making it on the radio? That doesn't make me too interested in any of their other work considering I don't like the only 2 songs I've ever heard of theirs. Interestingly enough, the only 2 of their songs to make it into this ranking of course. I don't really like the pacing in this song to be completely honest with you.

The 2nd of 3 songs to appear in this ranking by GFR. It isn't their original work as it was actually written by John Ellison and released in 1967 by his band Soul Brothers Six. Unfortunately the original only made it up to the 90's on the charts but this version went straight to the top 3. This remains the most popular version of the song even though it has been covered a few times over the years. Probably one of the weirder experiences with this song for me was cruising around in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas running people over with "...can I get a witneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesss" blaring on the radio lol. This song would eventually become one of GFR's best known songs but not my favorite according to this ranking. (I say that because I actually didn't know which of their songs I liked better until this ranking).

Man this takes me straight back to high school. I was one of those kids in high school that packed as many of the essential classes needed for graduating in the first two years so that I could coast through my Junior and Senior years with electives. One of those many electives I chose was Graphic Arts in the tech wing of the school where I heard this the most. I would basically spend back to back to back periods just hanging out in the tech wing bouncing back and forth from woodshop to automotive and engineering etc. and they always played music in each of the rooms. This song will forever remind me of the folks I spent my time with down there as it was regurgitated incessantly over the radio. The funny thing is, no one seemed to mind at the time but I'm curious if any of my friends from those classes have the same flashbacks when they hear it. The best thing I remember about that period of time is the team of teachers in the wing didn't even care when students would float from shop to shop. It was pretty awesome and one of the best memories I have of my time there. Sugar Ray was pretty popular around that time and had a few other hits as well.

Here is a classic that I heard quite a bit as a young kid when I really started to gain interest in musical instrumentation and whatnot. I'm always attracted to a nice acoustic sound and what I love about this song is it features Jim Krueger's 12 string acoustic guitar. I can't play on a 12 string guitar myself but kinda want to get one someday just because of the harmony you can create with one. I'm still learning new tricks and riffs all the time but I got a ways to go before I'd dare call myself a pro. Billy Dean would eventually record his own version of the song in 1993. It became the most popular version but the problem I have with it is that it was recorded as a country song. Somehow the twang in the vocals changes the whole thing for me even though the vocals are pretty much the biggest difference between the two versions. Normally I'd admit that my disinterest might be because of my aversion to most country music but in this case it really isn't because of that. I really didn't like the additional solo that Dean added in his version tbh.

So... I kinda feel bad for you Snake since you are running out of nominations fast (down to 2 left atm). You picked a genre that I like here but it loses some points because I've never heard it before this ranking even though I thought I did. The vocalist sounds like another prominent Pop Punk singer that I can't quite put my finger on atm. I don't think they are the same person because I can't find any info about Taylor Eby (the lead vocalist) for Handguns as far as being in another band. He definitely sounds like another popular Pop Punk vocalist though. The band has the same energy you'd get if Sum-41 and Simple Plan had a baby imo. I do like this song but I don't think it was even Handguns best song based on my research. The band has gone through a few members over the years and more recently re-united most of the original members for their newest album. This album was released digitally through Pure Noise records and can still be found on their site.

Um... not sure what you might be suggesting there. I didn't rank anything based on how mainstream it was or wasn't.

And we have roughly 125 more rankings before we get to the 7 pointers.

Literally, no, but whether or not you recognize it is a factor. You know more music than I do, so there's always the chance something more niche has caught your attention, but since the rating is out of 10 rather than binary, songs that didn't make it big do get penalized.

The 5th song to appear here from The Boss and still not the best imo. Coincidentally this is also the 5th single to be released from the Born In The U.S.A. album and even more coincidence, this song peaked at #5 on the mainstream pop charts lol. Speaking of mainstream songs though, this was the epitome of mainstream in the 80's. It became an anthem of sorts for many folks which actually isn't an uncommon thing when it comes to Springsteen music. The song is a literal recounting of Bruce's early years from roughly 1973. An interesting thing about this song is that there is a missing verse that was cut out of the song entirely. The additional verse was recorded in an alternate version of the song and referenced a fictional father figure who worked all of his life and never had glory days but before the song was officially released Springsteen felt that it didn't jive with the rest of the song so he had it cut out. There are 3 members of the E-Street band that were all featured as guests in the video here but didn't actually perform on the album itself. The song was nominated for a couple of MTV awards in 1986 but wasn't able to pull off a win unfortunately. Springsteen performed the song with the E-Street band at the Super Bowl XLIII half-time show and had changed the lyrics of the song from it's baseball references to football references accordingly.

How do you figure? 6 out of 7 of the point factors are based on my personal preferences for music.

Also, I can assure you there are some songs pretty high up on the list that I like that didn't chart well so "mainstream" really didn't have much of an effect there.

I guess I could be misunderstanding your angle but I just wanted to make sure that you weren't suggesting that only #1 hits made the top of the list because that wasn't even a factor I used in building my list. On the other hand I suppose it'd be an ok thing if some mainstream stuff did top the list since it'd be more relatable to the general audience but you'll find out eventually that the top of the list mostly reflects what kind of music I prefer personally.

Bleh more pop. Where do I begin with my continued discontent for the genre here... let's see, um... yeah I got nothing else I guess. This song is about self empowerment as a lot of Katy's songs are though. I'm sure by now anyone who's been following along already knows why I don't favor this decade of music but I used to have a crush on Katy Perry though so lets talk about that for a minute. Has anyone else deeded to her album art for her Teenage Dream album? No... just me? Why did I have the album you ask? Oh, it wasn't mine. My wife owns the album. Thankfully that crush didn't last very long though tbh. I eventually came to my senses sort of like when you wake up and realize that you've been getting horny over a bag of potatoes lol. That doesn't make sense you say... well that's my point. Finding Katy attractive doesn't make much sense to me. Anyway... looks like I might have a big enough write-up here I suppose so promptly on to the next song we go.

Ahhhh I can't get away from all the pop! lol. This one isn't so bad honestly and at least the video is pretty cool and kinda funny. It's exactly what the Walking Dead needs tbh. Come to think of it why haven't there been any zombies dressed up in costume on the show? Surely when the zombie apocalypse hits there'll be folks on the job who were caught off guard am I rite? How amazing would that be like in disneyland with zombie Mickey and Goofy running around town lol. Anyway, I am kinda surprised that this song didn't do better on the charts. Perhaps it was overlooked but you'd think that it sounding like a One Direction song right off the bat would have gotten it some attention. I mean... it's only a few years old so maybe it still has a chance to gain some traction. The video itself actually came about because the band is a fan of Director Chris Marrs Piliero who had done some videos for a few other artists like the Black Keys and Britney Spears. They sought him out and had a brainstorming session in which the Zombie theme was chosen to be a play on the lyric "I'm dyin' to live". Kinda genius if you ask me because who doesn't like stuff that is zombie themed is what I'm saying.

I got time for one more ranking so we'll dive into another song from this decade. We are changing gears here considerably though going from the usual Pop to a piece that was actually created for a popular film. Some of you may recognize the theme but it is from and was created for Christopher Nolan's film Inception hence the album it appears on. I'm most definitely a big fan of instrumentals though as I generally listen to a few while reading my graphic novels. You throw on the headphones and if the pairing is just right, you can sink so much deeper into the stories you read.. or I should say, that's how it is for me. Hans Zimmer has made countless Scores for the film industry and has always been a favorite composer of mine and this might be near the very top of his work that I appreciate which is why I didn't want to leave it out. I knew when doing this ranking though that instrumentals would have a tough hill to climb based on the selected criteria but I'm not too disappointed in the placement here honestly. I personally feel like the song is epic in a way but I understand that it isn't the usual go to when folks think about music. I'm pretty much satisfied that I can at least share my interest here.

You mean you don't have a category that is literally "how well did the world receive this song?" And then another that's essentially "how fondly do I recall this song?"

I'm not trying to belittle your system. It's very comprehensive and way more detailed than I would ever have the patience to carry out myself. I also don't fully understand it, but I trust from the level of detail that it's very fair-minded and thought out. I'm just kinda curious: if your system dropped the lowest score of the seven, how many songs would shoot up the ranks?

Hey @Snake5555555555

Since you are a Handguns fan I was wondering if you could answer a question for me. I did a quick search online but I didn't really see anything that answers it for me.

On the Life Lessons album art I noticed a "VI" and a "VIII" on the buildings to the left and right respectively. I didn't see the roman numeral "VII" on the house in the middle but then I realized that the second L in "Life Lessons" is an upside down 7. Is there any meaning to this?

Obviously I'm fixed on the number 7 so it makes me curious if there is a deeper meaning to the artwork.
