Hello and Welcome to the Ranking (Continued...)!

If you'd like to review Rankings #1,300 - #890 you may go here:
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/839-games-n-things/76531529

If you do not have access to the archive just request an invite to the board and I will get you access.

Just a couple of notes about the list:
-This ranking is almost entirely subjective. Please do not engage in a debate with me about whether this list qualifies as a legit "Best of" list. This is Not a ranking to determine the "best" based on record numbers or sales statistics etc.

This is purely a collection of tunes that are most appealing to my personal interests in music found within the amount of time I spent on research (with 300 nominations included). When the ranking is over you are more than welcome to reference any tunes that I did not include. I'm always down for great music and who knows, it is entirely possible that I will have simply overlooked some stuff that should be here. I listened to more than 5,000+ songs over the course of about 13 months or so, so I hope that was enough ground covered to at least offer some satiability. I have personally enjoyed the research either way.

---There are 260 songs representing each of the chosen decades. (70's, 80's, 90's, 00's and 10's)

----Yes I know the current decade has not yet completed but we are doing this anyway. Tbh there was sooooooo much terrible music this decade that I doubt we'll get anything much better than what we got right here. If I'm wrong, it doesn't matter because I don't want to sift through any more of this "Just Dance" infested generation.lol

Why didn't I include the 60's?
Simple, because I'm not confident I could have pulled 200 songs from that decade and also I would have known immediately what the #1 song would have been for this ranking.

So Instead... I present that song as this topic's Theme Song:

(...I really don't know why I favor this tune over everything else but every time I hear it I get a special kind of goosebumps.)

Paint It Black / The Rolling Stones / 1966
[10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3][10.3] = 72.1 = 10.3
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4irXQhgMqg" data-time="

The Rollout
I will be dropping you tunes in a couple ways here. Each song will be ranked out of total 1,300 and top 260 from their decade. There will be several statistics included in an ongoing update. There will also be a special ongoing update displaying the Top ranked songs in every category. *Categories were selected either by research or best fitting based on my experience.

The Nominator Challenge:
Some of you have submitted Nominations. You will receive an update in topic whenever one of a user's nominations gets ranked. You will collect a Sum of points equivalent to the Sum of every placement on your list of nominations. The Larger this number, the lower you will place in the finals. The user who has earned the smallest score in the finals will have made the best nominations and be called Winner of the Nominator Challenge. (This is a Bonus game I play in most of my rankings.)

The Topic Discussion rules
Be Friendly, Be Respectful and Be Appropriate!

I'm always cool with off topic posting as long as it stays friendly. With my Bi-polar I am sometimes easily triggered by unfriendly disputes and would like this space to be as free from that kind of stress as possible. Thank You

So, enjoy and get settled in for the ride! There are sooo many great tunes heading your way. Thanks for stopping by and following the ranking. I hope that not only can users discover some new music here but maybe participate in some candid conversation about their favorite tunes as they pop up. Your Pal, Se7en. =P

Final Score Breakdown:

[Beat]-[Hook]-[Lyrics]-[Memories]-[Message]-[Stickiness]-[Top 100]

[The Beat]
This will represent the overall rhythm and progression of the song imo. A slight evaluation of the instruments used in a song will also have weight on the final beat score.

[The Hook]
This will represent how likely it is that I listen to the whole song if it popped up on the radio. It will also represent the interest that I have to even finish a song.

[The Lyrics]
This will represent how well the verse and chorus are written imo. It will also represent my ability to memorize and sing along with the song if I have that interest. I also use this to measure how well the vocals mesh with the rest of the song imo.
[The Memories]
This will represent how much the song invokes personal memories. In some cases a song may gain points based on it's use in other Pop Culture I am familiar with.

[The Message]
This will represent the message of the song or the difficulty of understanding it's meaning imo. It also represents a degree of emotional response that I get from hearing the song. I also include points if a song comes with a decent backstory.

[The Stickiness]
This will represent the likelyhood that the song will get stuck in my head when I hear it. Depending on whether it's a verse, chorus, beat, simple riff or the whole damn song can determine how many extra points I give.

[Top 100 Bonus]
The ONLY piece of this scoring system that will be slightly Objective. I will score based on an average of the info I find. Top 100 lists, Best song lists, overall sales, awards won etc.

[The Leaning Points]
Every Song ranked will receive a "leaning" score in all 7 categories. A [0.1], [0.2] or [0.3] will be added to help the further breakdown of a songs final score. It's simply as follows:
[0.1] = I'm not 100% sure how I feel about a final score.
[0.2] = The final score can go either way up or down.
[0.3] = I am 100% confident in a final score.

Write-Up:
So getting back into this after the holiday break, I've unfortunately gotta subject you all to yet another One Direction song. It's a little bit catchier than the previous tunes so far but still totally meant for little girls imo. I get when you have a seasoned adult that wants to sing about the trials and tribulations of relationships to share and teach with the community but these teenager love songs that are filled with blind infatuations and immature innuendo aren't really my cup of tea. Does this mean I've clearly left the atmosphere of my youth behind and entered the galaxy of old age? Maybe... but I know one thing is for sure that this crap often offends my ears lol. Despite my disinterest though it didn't stop their fans who viewed the music video over 10 million times in less than 24 hours. The song appeared in one of the Just Dance games and was featured in the Now That's What I Call Music line.

Oof, two songs dropping almost back to back back there.

====================================
{ 922nd Place } [10's][ 169th Place] @Mega_Mana
Song:
"The Night Begins To Shine"

Band: B.E.R.
Album: Teen Titans Go!
---{ 2015 }---
Genre: Rock

Write-Up:
Kinda surprised that I haven't heard this one before this ranking but I really like the beat. The song isn't too deep but it's arrangement is almost just the right amount of melody for a big hit. It does get a little catchy after enough listens too. Unfortunately for you Mega this is the end of your 10's nominations. You still got plenty of other nominations left though so you are kinda looking good for the nominator challenge atm. Even though this was released in 2015 it's got a pretty slick New Wave sound to it imo. I didn't find anything that classified it as such but I can definitely hear it. I'm curious though, was this written for the Teen Titans show? (Too lazy to look that up atm)
====================================

I'm happy to see it got a solid ranking outside the bottom 300, and to see it among some greats like "Everlong," "Joy to the World," and "Let's Stay Together." From what I've gathered in the past and research (a.k.a. Wikipedia) right now, this was recorded in 2005 for a general music library as an 80s-sounding song, but wasn't actually released until 2015 on Teen Titans Go!

It's also pretty cool that it was just a little throwaway gag for a bit as a song Cyborg just kept humming or singing under his breath until there was an episode which became like a rock opera music video episode and was super awesome. ...And there was a four-part series of episodes centered on the rock opera world with covers of the song that I need to go find and watch as soon as I get home from work! I knew Cee-Lo Green covered it, but I had no idea why until now.

{ 917th Place } [70's][ 141st Place] @Mega_Mana
Song:
"Let's Stay Together"

Band: Al Green
Album: Let's Stay Together
---{ 1972 }---
Genre: Soul

Write-Up:
Meh... A really popular Soul hit from the 70's but I don't get it. It doesn't sound super fantastic and isn't even all that catchy imo but people love it. It ranks pretty high on a few different Love Song lists I looked at but I couldn't do 'ma thang' to this at all. That's probably why I wasn't born in the 70's I suppose lol. I am happy that it knocked that gdamn ABC song off the top genre list though as I've seen and heard enough of that crap. I've never owned an Al Green album and this is the only song off the top of my head that I think I've even heard of his. I do always confuse it for that "Let's get it on" song by Marvin Gaye though when I first hear it.

How dare you good sir! :P

I don't know what it is about this song, but whenever I hear it, I just get filled up. Like, I can't think of much else that fills my dark soul with light. Instant smile and urge to dance, even some watering of the eyes. It just hits those good vibrations.

But I'm with you on not knowing any other Al Green song (even looking up his singles, I just hear The Beegees with "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?" and that was theirs first AFAIK), and can see some Marvin Gaye confusion. But that brass section to start off the song, and his beautiful soulful voice, and the message of love and commitment... I think this is the one song I expected to go much further, but I can see by how many songs I really enjoy are falling alongside it, I know you have your work cut out for you.

And I need to listen to his album too and hear more.

Some commentary as we continue onward:

#962. "It Was a Good Day"

- God I love that beat. Powerful song about how surviving and the small things and not taking life for granted and taking pleasures from the little things that go right and when the bad things don't happen. Or that you take the good days where you can because the bad days are constant and overwhelming in that the days where nothing happens are the best. I know a guy whose life right now seems like this song where frustration and anger with how his life is boil over in similar respects.

#958. "Black Dog"

- This was the first song I did karaoke to. What a mistake that was.

#938. "I Swear"

- Didn't even know there was a country version, only know All-4-One's melodic R&B.

915. "Happy" - Anyway, every once in awhile I might bounce a knee to this one.
- Similar thoughts. It was fun at first, and the 24-hr music video was a pretty cool concept (watched Rhett & Link do a similar thing singing along with Lionel Richie's "All Night Long" all night which probably inspired Pharrell), but it's just some sugar. It's a quick pick me up but doesn't really have a lasting impact on the happy cells, and the more of it there is, the worse it gets. Going back quickly to "Let's Stay Together," Al Green's song is a hearty warming pot pie of delicious goodness by the fire in the early winter's night nourishing and comforting you while Pharrell's "Happy" is like... cotton candy at the carnival; good for a few bites, melting in your mouth quickly, but becomes cloying and disposable not long after and you wonder why you didn't save your money for something better but equally overpriced.

Also, how is 'a room without a roof' happy? I'd be worried about rain and weather damage and temperature control. You can't heat or cool the place because it goes right out, and the sun will just bake the place in midday summer. Plus, bugs and birds can just come and go as they please, and most depictions of rooms without roofs are rundown graffitied places only the homeless live in when they can't find a place with a roof. I'd say maybe it's a California thing, but now with all the fires and smoke, I'd definitely want a roof!

909. "Fire & Rain" - Not a bad classic Soft Rock song but kinda slow and without the sort of build and climax I prefer to hear in the music I listen to.

- I was surprised I didn't nominate this only because it seems like something I would have. Glad I didn't, because yeah, that write-up perfectly sums up the song. It's nice, but it doesn't hit any good highs when it can. It's just a nice song.

900. "Heat of the Moment" - I thought that it had appeared in either GTA Vice City or one of the Saints Row games but can't seem to nail down that info even though I could have sworn I heard it in one of them.

- Maybe you watched Supernatural?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByMEQ0cWRVA" data-time="

That said, I'm surprised that everyone's 70's nominations haven't been wiped out by now.

Booo =P. The '70s so far have been my favorites. But maybe that's because they've been cut down so much so fast that the best of '80s and beyond haven't really made much of an impression yet.

#890. "Crazy"

- Love the song, head bops instantly, and the name was for the duo of Cee-Lo Green and Danger Mouse. Music video killed me first time I saw it.

Write-Up:
Here is a tune that I don't really appreciate until the chorus and I'm almost pretty sure it's because it reminds me of a Farrely Brothers movie or something. I don't recall where I heard it but I'm sure it was used in one of their movies. I do know it was used in Hot Tub Time Machine though which was also a decent movie imo. I don't really understand the lyrics or meaning to the song tbh but it's the epitome of New Wave for sure. I do find it interesting that the song was finished the same month I was born even though it wouldn't be released until October. Not that that is significant for any reason but just a little neat for me really. At first I couldn't grasp why the dude in the video is so spastic but apparently that is the writer of the song and he was dancing "erratically" to emulate religious rituals. Hmm.. that brings me even further from understanding the song I guess because the last thing I thought it was about was religion. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame would eventually label this tune as one of the 500 songs in history that shaped Rock and Roll. I don't understand that either but I guess it's good that it's on the list though.

For something I really wasn't familiar with before this ranking I actually ended up hearing it a few times before getting down to the nitty gritty of the scoring here. It unfortunately didn't make a strong impact but I think it may be a bit higher on the list because of that. Unlike the last song, I was digging the tune up until the 2nd chorus here at 1:20 in. It sounds out of place imo and really brings down the song overall. It's heard again at 2:23 and same feeling tbh. Other than that I don't really have much to complain about here. The song lands somewhere around mediocre for me. This would go on to be the first song to top the billboard chart for the band but that was only on the Mainstream Rock and UK Rock charts. The song struggled a bit everywhere else. The message relayed in the song was meant to highlight a variety of issues people experience in life... or rather the social and emotional struggles they might face as they grow up. It's funny though because I don't remember there ever being a half naked tattooed chick dancing in front of my classroom in school. (At 2:06 specifically. :P)

First off jeeezus. This song does not need to be nearly 10 minutes long wow. It plays like a Meat Loaf song tbh and would probably score about the same had it been Jim Steinman who actually wrote it. (He's the dude that has co-written many of the songs Meat Loaf is famous for). Anyway, yeh after a mere 4 minutes into this song I've had enough but then there is more... and more... and more. Absolutely none of this song is notable to me. I remember it from my youth but I'd say it isn't all that memorable either. The message is confusing because it talks about street violence which is weird to hear in operatic form to begin with. It kinda can't be taken seriously because of that imo. If there are any Stephen King fans here, you'll be interested to know that some of the lyrics were actually used in the opening Epigraphs of The Stand. I guess the song does make it onto the average Bruce Springsteen fan's "Best of song" list but this is the first time I've ever seen that suggested in my research.

Here I introduce you to a band that I generally like and am a bit surprised to have to drop one of their tunes so low. It's some of their newest work of course since it's most of the stuff they did last decade that I prefer and would be unlikely to drop this low. The video is kinda funny especially that "Boobies and Ranch" hat that the lead singer is wearing. The song poses the obvious sentiment that age doesn't change that many of us and we are destined to face the inevitable conclusion where what is normal for us individually will eventually be antiquated and we must accept what is new or fade away... or that is what I take from it rather. We are all creatures of habit so it's a fact that most of us go out jamming to the music that shaped our minds in our youth. Perhaps that is a closer message to what is actually being displayed here than what I originally suggested but I dunno. Not a bad tune though just not very outside of the box and noticeable so to speak and what I mean by that is the beat is pretty "safe" or commonly appreciated for a rock tune.

This is a song I would expect that most viewers here would expect it's appearance on a list like this. It's unquestionably notable given that we have 1 of the Beatles here and debatably the most successful one too. I kinda like the symphonic elements here but then I kinda don't. The song feels like it should be an epic ballad of sorts and maybe it is for most fans but for me it's just another catchy tune from the 70's. Probably the other big reason why I navigate away from this tune is the whole James Bond issue I have. It was the main theme song of the Bond flick with the same title. The Guns N' Roses version is supposed to be better according to the internet but it only squeaks out a lead by like a half a point for me.

Best Version IMO: Band/Album/Year

Not really digging the intro harmonica but the basic beat isn't too bad. Obviously as a child of the 80's I am quite familiar with the song in and of itself but I've got nearly zero clue about the band or their history. This might sound weird but the song seems to be lyrically broken to me. I know I'm supposed to read into why they are dancing but I don't feel like their main cause is significant. It just sounds like they came up with a decent riff and fit the only words in the chorus that didn't sound weird for the octave they were trying to reach. On second thought that does sound weird. You can clearly see the motivational themes pouring out of the video. I guess I'm not sure what I mean then... maybe I was just trying to justify how the song sounds and it really doesn't have anything to do with the lyrics.

Then a few seconds go by and I'm immediately pulled back into the 90's by Why. This song was played excessively on the radio as I recall. Why? That is the question isn't it? I don't know. I do know that Annie Lennox creeps me out. If I didn't know she was a woman though I wouldn't dare to say because she does kinda look like a dude just sayin'... (Sorry short write-up. Work interrupted my thought process.) You're unfortunately down another nomination though Raetsel.

Oy... Not the biggest fan of this song. It's very "poppy" and less "electric" than I'd prefer and that reoccurring snare is super sharp on my eardrums. I find it funny that most of Taylor Swift's songs are about heartbreak and having to deal with cheating boyfriends but um... has anyone else noticed how much of a scandalous looking floozy she appears to be in all of her videos? There is no way she's committing to anyone am I rite? :P That brings me to another thought, How many other people think that this girl actually is insane? Like I know the whole relationship/tragedy schtick is her thing but for crying out loud, how many of these victimizing tunes can she come up with? If you have been through that many boyfriends just maybe they aren't the problem after all know what I'm saying? lol

The 3rd Heart song to make an appearance so far if anyone is counting and obviously the best one up till now imo. It isn't top tier worthy imo but pushes away mediocre rather easily. I used to hear this one a lot during my mother's "chore time" where the kids did most of the cleaning while she entertained herself in other ways. More specifically it makes me think of doing dishes so that is probably what I was doing more often when this played which is kind of a weird memory connection. I also saw it air quite a bit on MTV. Anyway, I like the beat but pretty much skip this one whenever I hear it on the radio. I find the vocals a little shrill as I get older but that may be because I don't favor the melody really. There are 5 people in all that have credit for co-writing this song.

Hey, a whole bunch of songs at once. And one of them's mine, too!

I'm kinda surprised And We Danced stayed up that long. I was scraping the bottom of the barrel trying to find an 80's song that didn't get struck as something you already had. (And apparently I still had one autopicked for me.) I went with The Hooters because they're a local Philadelphia group and I didn't expect you to have actually heard the song before.

I remember a time when the intro to this song got me in such a funk. I was frequenting the pool halls with a drinking buddy of mine after work. (Obviously before I got married and was allowed to have a drinking buddy lol) ....but anyway, It'd get kicked on at least a couple times a night on the jukebox. It didn't even matter if someone paid for it or not, the random setting on the machine was like 99.99% guaranteed to play the song a few times each and every single day. I honestly feel like there is a very rare chance that there is anyone coming into this topic that has not heard this song. It's been played a lot in many different forms of media and has been covered over a whopping 500 times! Why don't I have it higher then you ask? Well... I think I've heard just too damn much of it tbh.

Another highly recognizable tune from the 70's imo. I'd guess that Disco was just coming into it's prime when this song came about because it totally sounds like it was deliberately created for Disco. Obviously yeah it was created in Disco fashion but you know when you see or hear something and you just feel like it is supposed to exist like it is what it is? I dunno. I only have one major problem with it unfortunately and that it is really shallow lyrically. The lack of variation in the song is disappointing in a specific way. You could loop it quite easily in a way that you could never know just how many times you have listened to the song which might be great if you are in to extended plays but now that I think about it, it might explain why I've seen a number of dance floors completely empty while this was playing. Perhaps folks have grown tired of hearing it?

I'm mortified that I had to give it such a high score for the beat and stickiness but it invades your brain some... how. There were soooo many memes created following this tune and among them the only one I really liked which was the piece with Obama singing it through clips. But honestly I eye-roll so hard whenever I hear any version of this song now. Does anyone else feel that way? The song of course propelled Carly Rae Jepson to a bit of temporary fame which pretty much only lasted up until they stopped playing this s*** on the radio. If there is anything that is the worse thing I'll never forget about 2012, it's probably these gdamn Bubblegum Pop songs.

I honestly don't think there is anything Funkier than the beat here. I mean, it's in the title am I rite? Rob Parissi really hit the jack pot when he wrote this song for his band Wild Cherry. It propelled them to instant stardom the year this was released which happened to be their first outing. The song went straight to #1 in no time and became a popular staple at the clubs in the late 70's. Billboard (as of last year) still has it included on their Top 100 "greatest of all time" list. I don't quite feel as strong about it as that but it's notable and gets my head bobbin'. Vanilla Ice would eventually record his own version of the song and embarrassingly did not give Rob credit for the song so naturally he got his a** sued for half a million bucks lol. It makes me laugh because of the line "play that funky music white boy" and who is whiter that Vanilla Ice am I rite?

One thing I did more than anything else as a kid was listen to the radio. (That just made me sound hella old)

Interesting... this song seems to be the longest running #1 hit in all of Rod Stewart's career as well as the longest running #1 of 1976 accordingly. I like some of his music but I never really knew much about his history tbh. This is also not my favorite song of his either which disappoints me because one in particular that I selected for the ranking and is further up the list, supposedly isn't comparable based on sales records etc. Which is weird because I was sure the song (to be ranked) was much more popular. As of only a couple years ago Billboard even reported this song as one of the top 20 most popular songs to ever exist on thier charts. Maybe it's because Rod Stewart was more popular in the 70's than he was in the 80's??? I guess I'll find out once I get to that other song and get more details to compare. Anyway, this is an easy going song. Not bad for those times when you want to hear music but don't need anything jarring up your senses. Still kinda middle of the road for me though.

Blah. That's the one word I give my wife every time she says she loves this song. (She selected it for the ranking btw) But yeah... heard it too much and other than the message of the song, I don't really care for much else. I find the rhythm to be a mixed bag of up and down but know for sure that the inconsistency bugs me. Does anyone else find the vocals a bit whiny like I do? Maybe it's the lead singer's voice that bugs me I dunno. I haven't heard anything else by Hozier though so I can't be sure about that theory. Hozier actually released their debut album as a free download under a different title before eventually re-releasing it as a self-titled album. Their might be some differences between the two but I wouldn't know if there were. The music video for this song was released before and became responsible for the band getting licensed through Columbia Records which was uncommon but is starting to become more of a thing in the new digital age. Andrew Hozier wrote the song out of frustration with the Catholic Church's teachings and the lyric "Take me to Church" is actually a metaphor comparing the song's protagonist to the religion.

One thing I can recognize about Katy Perry is that she knows how to make music that catches on. The problem I have is that most of the time the music doesn't have a lasting effect on me. I do like some of her songs no matter how often I hear them (to be ranked) but then a very large part of her catalog just becomes hard to listen to. The more listens I give, the more flaws I identify with the particular set of preferences I hold against the music. This song for example sounds like nothing but a bunch of shrieky vocals where it once sounded completely harmonic to me. The song is certified "Diamond" because it reached 10 million sales as a single which is amazing if you think about that many folks willing to pay for a single song just in the US alone. I'm not sure why people are always claiming that piracy is so rampant especially when you have examples like this and even moreso the fact that it was and has been available for free right on youtube the whole time. This song actually got nominated for several awards even winning a few. According to the Nielson Broadcast Data Systems this song had the 5th highest number of replays on the radio in 2011.

Here is an interesting example of how the scoring system works differently than if I went straight up biased on everything. While I do like the Foo Fighters, I definitely do not prefer (in my gut) this song over the two songs of theirs that we've seen thus far (Best of You and Everlong). Of course the way I decided to break down the scoring would suggest that I prefer this song but unfortunately even less desirable songs have some good parts. If even a couple of those parts tip the scale on the ranking we get this abomination. J/k lol. I don't hate this song that bad. Why did I mention this? Because it tells me that I can be confident that I'm not just choosing favorites in a way. I didn't want this ranking to be all about my gut preferences. I wanted to sort of scientifically or mathematically... however one wants to see it I guess?; stack them up based on what I prefer in my music and what I get from it. Does that make sense? Why did I not talk about this song in this ranking? I dunno... it happens sometimes at 3:00am. :P

Anyway, this is easily slumped into my "Jukebox Rock" pile if I had one. I would bet that most biker bars in the entire country would contain this tune. I can certainly recall from my youthful bar-hopping days (like they were that long ago lol) seeing this and hearing it practically in every bar setting with a standard juke box. If it's a regional thing then I could be wrong but I guess that could say something about the folks in my area lol.

Either he has been extremely lucky or we all just gotta agree that he's got some talent. There are a few of his songs I legitimately like but most of his music is just too soft for me. You'll undoubtedly come to realize later in the ranking that I need steady catchy beats and blanketing harmonies that carry from beginning to end to appease my senses. These kind of pop songs do that stuff consistently-partially if I can put those two words together for a moment. What I mean by that is that I like only some of the elements here. If you are a fan don't worry though, there are atleast 3 other songs of his in this ranking.lol

This one gets me nostalgically in a few spots but overall brings me nowhere emotionally. It's probably close to their 2nd best song ever but I'm not sure about any of that. Much better Metalcore than the stuff Bane has nominated for the ranking but still not quite the best in the ranking. There are a couple of other Killswitch Engage tunes I like. I can't recall if I got them both in the ranking atm or not unfortunately. The background guitar sucks me into this song up until the grungier riffs kick in. I always tend to like intricately finger picked guitar riffs especially in a rock setting like this. I do believe this song might be used as a theme for a wrestler. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong... CM Punk maybe? That's a wrestling guy isn't it? I don't know for sure. I don't follow modern wresting but I have a client that talks about it from time to time which is why I am willing to make a guess. Anyway, not a bad song for what it's worth really.

They even played this song in the grocery store lol. It's not something that I would expect to wind up on a contemporary list of any sort but I have seen it believe it or not. Ouch I'm sorry Mega. I didn't realize you had two songs so close together here. That's a bummer. This is the first of several songs by Third Eye Blind to be ranked that made it into the ranking though so stay tuned for more. I sort of like this song but I honestly struggle with it. It doesn't have any significant part of it that is memorable for me. The overall melody feels like it's trying to prevent itself from being catchy imo. It does take me back to the 90's in a nostalgic way but that may be by association. Not a terrible selection as it's made it almost halfway in the ranking but I think there might have been a few better songs from the band that actually didn't make it into the ranking.

I originally thought that this song had been released in the 60's so it almost got removed from the draft list. Surprisingly it wasn't as old as I thought but the reason I thought it was older is because a few times that I visited my grandmother on one of my stepfather's side of the family I'd hear it. She was an older woman that preferred to listen to old 50's and 60's country songs and as I said I could have sworn that is where I've heard this the most so naturally I assumed it was older. Anyway, none of that is meaningful ranking content I understand, but I didn't have a lot of anything else to say about this one unfortunately.

I do believe this song might be used as a theme for a wrestler. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong... CM Punk maybe?

Correct! He used that as his WWE theme for a while. He switched from "This Fire Burns" to "Cult of Personality" towards the end of his run there. IIRC, he had used Cult of Personality earlier in his career before joining WWE? I know at least some people were ecstatic about him getting to use that theme "again" at the time, but it's all very second-hand 'this is something I heard from random people on a message board several years ago' knowledge that I don't care to research.

I actually rather like This Fire Burns. It wound up growing on me as I was a big fan of Punk's for a while... not so much now, but it's a long story and I don't see any need to go into all his controversies.

Every time I hear this song I am immediately reminded of the countless hours I spent back in the day grinding Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec. That game made me rage like no other for sure. Does anyone else remember those painfully near impossible time trials? Holy s*** it was tedious. Still... I love the s*** out of that game. Too bad I can't share that same sentiment with this song. By the time I was finished with the game, I was done with this song forever (or so I thought gdamnit :P). It's a really decent jam though and one of The Cult's best imo.

It's probably close to their 2nd best song ever but I'm not sure about any of that. I'm just noting that they might be the only two songs I can really think of when I think of the band atm lol.

Hey look at that, we made it to some AC/DC! Certainly not bottom of the barrel by any means but a decent starting point for the band in this ranking. While most of AC/DC's catalog is fairly mediocre I do like a bit of it tbh. You'll hear me compare and fit them mostly into that "Jukebox Rock" category I keep mentioning as they can be found in nearly every Jukebox ever imo (obviously not but I like to believe so). Anyway, the first time I ever heard this tune was in a classic Stephen King movie by the title of Maximum Overdrive. I think it was a scene where one of the lead trucks had just become sentient and was cruising down the highway ramming cars and whatnot but it's been awhile since I've seen it. Anyway, that's when I first became aware of and started listening to AC/DC. This song has a kick a** but kinda standard rock beat when compared to everything else the band is known for.

Yeah see, I must not be too big of a fan then because Selling the Drama and I Alone are the only two on that list that I can even recall without looking up.

Write-Up:
It's been almost a full 3 points since the last Nu Metal song has dropped so the genre seems to be doing better than most. I do prefer Nu Metal nowadays but it has to be the right kind of Nu Metal tbh. This song really presented itself in 2003 as it was blasted across many of the rock stations I listened to at the time. I was working at a Truss factory which was fairly decent factory labor and they used to blast a Mainstream Rock station across the overhead P.A. system which actually motivated most of the workers. This gem here must have played once every hour it seemed for real. I heard it so much in fact that I now cringe at the sound of the lead singers voice so I'm sure you can imagine having to hear this again is not so much of a treat. Despite my disinterest in the piercing qualities of Amy Lee's voice, the band does have a unique sound. I'm not sure why exactly but it took the band nearly 8 years to release their first album after they formed in 1995. This was their first hit single from their debut album if I recall correctly.

Here is a classic I love from my childhood. I heard this a fair amount as a kid because when my oldest brother finally started to leave behind the 70's and get into the 80's it was pretty much the mainstream 80's rock stations or this one "No Life 'til Leather" demo by a new band called Metallica that he listened to. An interesting thing about this song is that it didn't even hit the charts until it was re-recorded for the band's self titled album in 1987 which many would agree (imo) is the superior version since that is the version generally heard on the radio. Whitesnake sounds like classic american rock but in fact they are a British band believe it or not. VH1 would eventually dub this tune as one of the 100 best songs of the 80's. Sadly here in this ranking I have 82 other tunes I prefer from the 80's before it hits the Top 100 for the decade. Does that mean VH1 is wrong? ...um, absolutely! :P To be perfectly fair and honest though, I probably could have bumped this a bit higher but one of the reasons I didn't is because it just doesn't have the type of replayability I'm into. For me extended replays of this song reveal it to be far less entertaining than the occasional nostalgic trip I get from randomly hearing it on the radio.

Was there anyone who ever found this artist attractive? Just curious why she thought a video of her strolling around some city completely nude would be appealing. While I do tolerate a few of her songs, I always get annoyed at her videos because she just always looks like she overcompensates the lip-syncing of her own music. It could be bad acting I guess but it defintely changes how I feel about her music. Outside of the videos I think it's fair to say that she has a rather unique and recognizable voice although there is that one song that everyone thinks is hers but totally isn't. This song did receive a grammy nomination in 2000 for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance but failed to win losing out to Sarah McLachlan. Even after hearing this song a hundred times I honestly still don't know what Alanis is truly thankful for in this video but according to the internet she wrote the song while on a spiritual journey to India so maybe it was some kind of drug? I wonder what kind of drug-laced epiphany makes you want to shoot a music video in the buff but I'm sure it pleased at least a couple of her fans. This is actually the most successful song of hers in the backend of her career or to this date I should say (just in case she ever makes a comeback) which is not likely.
