I'm talking about actual beauty of atmosphere / landscape / etc. I realize some games can be "immersive" but not beautiful (e.g. survival horror games). I'm not talking about those.

What is the most beautifully immersive game you've ever had the opportunity to play???

The Legacy of Kain series (particularly Soul Reaver 1, 2, and Defiance).

I vividly remember just roaming around as Raziel and feeling like I was in the world. There was just this very cool vibe to everything. Lonely and mysterious. Eager to unlock and understand all the secrets.

Bioshock was also incredible. (the first one only).

Metal Gear Solid 2 when it first came out was mind-blowing.

Panzer Dragoon Zwei, Saga, and Orta also hold a very special place in my heart.

Probably a game most people won't think of: Thief 2.

One of the mid-game missions, you start on a rooftop and see a large building in the distance, that is your objective. Not only do you have to get to that building(navigating across several blocks of rooftops), but you need to navigate the several floors of that building, steal something, and then get back to where you started. Keep in mind this isn't an open world game, this is literally just one of 15 levels. The whole time each building/rooftop has stuff going on like guards talking, neighbors yelling/fighting, and just overall atmosphere that conveys that people actually live in this level. You can spend hours upon hours navigating just this one level and not even come close to finding everything it has to offer.

That is just one example, but the whole game is filled with levels like that (although usually a bit smaller in scope). I think the smallest level in the whole game is the first one, and you still have to navigate a 3 story mansion.

Grats man. BotW is a great game (especially on the Switch).

Many people complained about the weapon breaking system, but that game hands out weapons like Bernie Sanders hands out college tuitions.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Xenoblade series yet. When making the topic, I was recalling the beauty of those worlds (XCX and XC2 in particular). But then again, there's many games I HAVEN'T played yet (hence the point of the topic).

Xenoblade is definitely beautiful, but I don't know how immersive it is; I was always aware that it was all a game.

The biggest ones I can think of at the moment are the Gravity Rush series, and GTA V. The latter feels a lot more real than previous games; my stomach turns when I fall a great distance just like it would in real life. And Gravity Rush feels even more immersive when playing in first person mode.

Immersive "realism": GTA V. I've so much enjoyed just driving along on the highways during night, with my own lights turned off. That just immerses me like nothing else.

Immersive fantasy: DKC series, specifically DKC2

Fallout: New Vegas with all the great environment/ambience/textures/weapon mods.

It's in my top 5 games of all time, and with all of the 70+ mods I managed to find, it became a game I can replay countless times every year.

In fact, I've put more than 2500 hours on it, easily. The only other that comes close for me, is MHFU on PSP, with around 1500 hours.

I think it's incredible how these games STILL hold up today in terms of immersion, thanks to the modding community.

Of course, that just makes me all the more pissed that Bethesda screwed over the very people that made their games so successful (via its shitty-ass "Creation Club" / aka paid mods). Not to mention, their creation club keeps forcing the game to be updated over and over and over, which breaks many of the tools (e.g. script extenders) which the ACTUAL modding community needs for their content to work.

Bethesda's marketing and anti-modder executives can go shove pine-cones up each others' asses. The games are indeed immersive though...
