Wheels of Aurelia for PS4

I wish that I had realized earlier than your dialog choices rarely matter because trying to hold a conversation while driving wasn't easy, especially since their auto-drive is pretty bad as you will bang into other cars and railings.

Other than that, this narrative driving game was kind of neat to an extent.

Tacoma for XB1

I haven't played Gone Home, and heard mixed things about this, but Tacoma is actually a very good walking simulator. Instead of having a character narrate your experiences through stuffy, stilted writing, the main character was silent as you went through through a well-paced and interesting story.

One Strike (Switch)

This fighter lives up to it's name.
One hit and you are dead.
This game is so fun and simple. It reminds me of Bushido Blade.

Fights take place on a single screen. You move left and right, can dash forward or back, one button attacks and one button defends.

Only minor gripe is I wish it had online play.

Planescape: Torment Enhanced Edition (PC)

This was a longtime coming. I tried to beat this years ago but gave up and now I was compelled to see it through. Masterful. I wonder if Tides of Numenera lives up?

I've been playing this for a week now and I'm tired. Couldn't put it down. So, I think I'll just say they just don't make CRPGs like these anymore. Kept me coming back till the finish. Very worth it and very intriguing a story. I'm willing to overlook its complications, its misgivings, and I only had the thing crash on me twice.

Jake Hunter: Ghost of the Dusk (3DS)

It took me a month and 20 hours to finish, so a rare long game from me. I really like noir stories, so a collection of unrelated stories only tied by a few central characters is up my alley. This is my second Jake Hunter game after Memories of the Past. I heard mixed reviews for this, but I think Ghost of the Dusk is easily the better game. The only issue I truly had was something that all games like this share, and that is its pacing. There were also the minor issues of a few noticeable translation errors and since the slate of cases came from different games (only the titular case was an original), artwork quality was inconsistent.

Ghost of the Dusk > Legend of the Demon Princess > Forget-Me-Not > Four Seasons > For Love

Slain: Back from Hell (PC)

Super Castlevania IV meets Heavy Metal with a dash of Dark Souls. It's no Bloodstained, but boy does the music RAWK. There's even a button that lets you headbang after beating a boss. Aside from the unchangeable control scheme, gameplay is pretty solid. It's one of those you're gonna die alot games. My only issue is that sometimes there are traps that kill you in one hit but nothing overly unfair. Oldschool Castlevania is more unfair I say.

Also dat final form of the final boss is tennis with Ganondorf but amped up.

Nancy Drew 19: The Haunting of Castle Malloy (PC)

It's never going to be a Scooby-Doo plot, is it? I am looking at the games on this list and so far every plot with a creepy ghost just turns out to be something or other. And whenever it is a Scooby-Doo plot, the "ghost" is a crap animal or circumstance. I'm not complaining, but now I think I'm about to be jinxed when a real Scooby-Doo plot rears its ugly head.

This isn't as good as the last one, but it has its own charm. I like the plot of this one and for once its subverted my expectations. I think this is the first time that there is absolutely no culprit at all which is frankly not only refreshing, but unexpected. A few gripey puzzles but none too annoying and the minigames felt more polished than the horror that was Icicle Creek.

But now I brace myself for what I've heard is one of the worse in the series. Can this thing top Kapu Cave?

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past (3DS)

Can I just say, what a wonderful year to start being a Dragon Quest fan. Of course I wasn't expecting a Smash Bros addition when I started DQ1 last Christmas but here we are. 7th game finally done.

I like it. My only complaint though is Kiefer. I don't know how people can like this guy, but he essentially abandons saving the world for some centuries old pussy. And I know he has a spin-off but that doesn't count. Even funnier is that his dad thinks he's amazing now when you know the truth yourself. You even lied to the king for this guy and he leaves you to pick up the pieces of destiny. but other than that, good job.

It took alot longer to finish this one, mostly because of the insane amounts of backtracking and triggered conversations. It was real slow to start too but I heard the PS1 version was worse. I do enjoy the time travel aspect up until all the islands were restored but admittedly it took a loooong time before things got really interesting.

All in all, a very enjoyable experience. I guess the next DQ is the one everyone's more familiar with. The FF7 of the franchise so to speak. I'll pick that one up on the 3DS soon enough.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star (3DS)

And while I'm at it, might as well finish this too. This has been a long time coming. I just got stuck at the final boss, which wasn't hard per se, but required me to acquire specific set of real world item stickers to make things easier. Everything in this game was going so well until that point.

Not that it means this game is good by any means. I dig the tracks though. But I'm glad to be done with this as well.

Vastly superior to the guy's other work in The Beginner's Guide. Par the course, I went against the narration right off the bat. I'm not sure if there are actually multiple endings or everyone more or less experiences the same thing, but I think I got the confusion ending.

Nancy Drew 20: Ransom of the Seven Ships (PC)

I dunno what they were talking about. This isn't the worst. It's decent. Gives me Myst / Zork vibes. Just...why do they keep doing these annoying minigames. It's probably the only thing preventing me from putting this in my toplist. Maybe at 5th. But I know it'll be easily dethroned in the coming games.

I also loved the twist in this one, similar to the last game where there are no list of suspects. the only inhabitant on the island was the culprit, and he was an old one from an old game. Even moreso, is that he actually gets away and "wins" against you for the first time.

Football Game (PC)

I just discovered this is by the guy who made A Date in the Park, which is a really old indie game about a guy who encounters an eventual serial killer on a seemingly innocuous but odd date. So knowing that, I expected some kind of horrific scenario to come from this. But what I like about it is that it isn't straight horror. It's certainly spooky, with subtle elements coming to mind and the tone never shifts to anything comedic so that's well done.

More horror games should be like this. I know its not true horror as there is no tag of it on Steam, but I feel like the market has been saturated by all these jump scary weirdness.

Incredibly well-made puzzle game. I had to look up solutions for some of the puzzles that utilize the playback tool, but it always feels good to beat a puzzle game that you rarely needed help for. I went and got what I assume is the basic ending first knowing that I could just restore an old save and go for whatever ending I get when I acquire everything and solve all the puzzles (which I am have already begun to do).

Wailing Heights (PS4)

There's a lot to like about this, but the execution was a mess with poor design choices and various bugs. They helped make a four hour game feel like it should have been a two hour game. One of the worst things was its possession system. The whole game is you possessing different characters, and the rules are you have to switch from one possession target to another while both are on screen. With no way to find out where a character last was, a large chunk of the game is you running around finding finding and possessing them. In many cases, you are only possessing a character to do a minor task, and then you have to do the whole process over again with another character.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection - Halo 2 (XBO)

I enjoyed it more than Combat Evolved, I think. I think I came into Combat Evolved with high expectations which it couldn't fulfill, and I started this one kind of dreading it because I feel like it's the least talked about Halo. I felt the switching between characters was neat (although the story did get convoluted at some point because of it) and I enjoyed that I was pushed to use a wider variety of weapons, rather than just keeping the same gun(s) like I did in CE. I've also mastered the "oh it's a vehicle/Flood level I guess I'll just skip through the entirety of it" trick, which is pretty necessary to have fun in those levels.

All in all, from the Halo I've played so far:

Reach > 2 > CE
