I beat The Legend of Zelda again because why not NES Switch is right there. First quest, doing the second now.

And Super Mario Bros. 3 because it actually has been a long time since I've played it. I have extensive memories of playing the first seven worlds a lot as a kid but never really beating it. I'm not even sure I ever really did because the last castle felt completely unfamiliar.

THE iDOLM@STER MUST SONGS: Red Album (Vita)

FC'd all songs on at least Normal difficulty and reached S rank in the concert mode. I don't think I'll be able to finish it off for the platinum because of the 600 combo trophy, so I'm done for the time being.

Replay
Completed the game using just the default gas gun. That was for Achievement of the Week over at Retro Achievements.

Fucking great game

It really is. I've been meaning to want to try out a hack of it where they added an extra level 8 after you beat the game's 7 levels and you get to face Nega Duck

Double Dragon (NES)

Replayed this via the Nintendo Switch.
I kinda like this take on Double Dragon, despite the supposed limitations. Yeah, lack of a 2 player co-op mode is very glaring upon first inspection. Still a fine game though. Could deal with less platforming but it was ok for variety sake's.

I'm really digging taking screenshots and clips with the Switch so far. I made a couple of clips.

I made it past the infamous wall blocks in the beginning of Mission 4 without getting hit. In most of my previous playthroughs I can at least make it past getting hit either once or twice. One time I actually lost all of my lives at this part years ago. You can bet I gave this game the saltiest of runbacks after that ordeal.

Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology - 3DS

I played the original several years ago and I enjoyed it a lot, but I couldn't remember how it ended. It's pretty rare for me to play through a remake, but this was a fantastic second playthrough of an excellent RPG.

Stocke is a very well done main character. I still love JRPGs, but I have grown weary of clueless teenagers that are thrust into saving the world because all adults are incompetent or broken. I suppose technically Stocke is supposed to be 19 years old, but he is far more experienced and mature than your average 19 year old - He might as well be 30 years old or so. The voice acting, supporting cast and story are also very well done.

I highly recommend Radiant Historia - It's one of the best portable RPGs I have ever played.

Kingdom Hearts Final Mix (PS4)

Also II on my wifes file, but I dont really count that for myself. Not going to have time myself to do CoM, II, BBS, and DDD by the time III comes out but I may try to encourage her to push through BBS so shes at least mostly there with who people are and all that. (Initial response from her was not positive so it may come down to however much I can do with her in the room on the weekend.)

Shadowgate (NES)

Replay.
I had a really good incentive to replay this game again and it was cause it finally got a set done over at Retro Achievements.

I remember trying this game out long ago and I remember not liking it at first cause I didn't really understand the mechanics and not knowing what to do (gave up after opening the first door). Few years later, I went back to it, got really into it and fell in love with it. Ever since playing this game I started to find whatever Point and Clicks I could find (this eventually led me to Deja Vu, Uninvited and so on.)

At some point I REALLY have to stop getting sidetracked and play the 2014 remake.

Dusk (PC)

I looove the throwback. I've never played Blood but my god this game is like the 90s never left. Maybe I should play that, but I've had enough horror for awhile. There's so many things I wanna talk about though. Every beat is decidedly 90s: the frantic pace, the secrets, the homages to DOOM, Quake, STALKER, Half Life 1, and so on. The way enemies gib hard when you blow them up with far more damage than necessary, the excuse plot, fast movements, no reloading, heavy metal pumping through your headphones. The horror elements were superb and they got me when they did. And the best for me was how many filters and settings this game had.

You could, if you want, run this on an old PC with 640 resolution and super pixelized. I'm glad it has the option to do that. In an interview, the dev stated that the biggest challenge was making the game as ugly as possible because Unity kept making the game look good.

World of Van Helsing: Deathtrap (XBO)

Fun tower defense game, could probably use some balancing though. The levels really only got hard when the bosses came in, and that was mostly because I was so used to having all the traps do the work that I forgot to intervene. Still a fun change of pace for me though.

Beat Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link. The game was really hard. I didn't think i was ever going to beat it. But I found all the extra lives I could before making it to the great palace. The floating eyeballs were annoying until I found out you could use Spell to defeat them. Now I've beaten three Zelda games this year. I'd like to get Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, but I don't like the WiiU controller.

God of War (PS4) - yep, it's a great game.

I might try some postgame content. We will see. A lot of the random game systems seem completely geared towards it. For a while I was confused about how long the game was supposed to be- narrative structure implied shorter, level/world design implied longer.

I also finally triggered the endgame cutscene of MGSV (PC). So much about the story is a hot mess, but damn it if the gameplay isn't the best ever. Every other stealth or 3rd person game has me wishing i could execute half of the basic commands

And if you pretend half the cutscenes don't exist and you just listen to the audio cassettes you can invent a way for the story to make sense, too

Don't Forget Our Esports Dream (PC)

So a couple of years ago there was this StarCraft visual novel and they announced a Kickstarter for a second one. So I backed it and a month ago or so this came out and I finally got around to playing it. Pretty ok game. As a big fan of StarCraft and esports this was kinda neat to read through. They had these cool sections where you can "play StarCraft" too and it was pretty cute.

My name also appears in the special thanks section at the end since I was a backer, which was cool.

Project Warlock (PC)

I went and got this because I wanted the cathartic moments from Dusk without all the Horror. But honestly it got pretty tense by the end as well. I suppose this is how 90s shooters are after all. My favorite thing about this game is that each of the 5 zones have an easter egg showing a 90s Shooter Protagonist strung up and executed. All in all pretty enjoyable. I also love how each of the 55 levels have their own theme tune.

Wow. I shed a tear at that ending. Haven't played something like this since Inside. Those Swedes really know how to make games. And the musical score is amazing as well.

Unfortunately, also like Inside, it is pretty short. And the ending to some may be a bit too ambiguous and melancholic. Also, the price might be a problem.

First two of the year!

1. Kingdom Hearts Final Mix (PS4)

2. Kirby Star Allies (Switch)

I see opinions have been kinda split on Star Allies, but I loved it. I guess it technically was kinda short, but the final world was the size of two or three other worlds, so it evens out. The helper mechanic returning from Super Star was something I definitely have been looking forward to. The friend based puzzles were cute and the level design had some nice high points. The final boss fight was a lot of fun too.

Got it courtesy of my secret santa. Played on Very Easy since saw achievement and didn't see any sort of "or a higher difficulty" so didn't take any chances. Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride (Android)

Phew. What a trip. Apart from a few flaws I can forgive, I would say this is the best one yet. You know, I originally started playing DQ because I was bored waiting in line for something. But after the 3rd game I realized I could basically play every DQ game except maybe IX which is a shame. So, I'm enjoying this ride so far.

And I hear the next one's even darker. Can't wait.

Awesome. I'm going into each of the games, blind. All I know about VI is an improved Job System, a "darker" storyline, and something about alternate universes. Can't wait to get started.

Unfortunately I am also skipping X. Not that I couldn't play it, I just don't like MMOs in general and you can't exactly "beat" it in regular time. I am planning to maybe get into some of the spinoffs after I'm done with the main series.

My main issue right now looking ahead is IX. I can't find a reasonable cart anywhere near me, and I hear terrible stuff about emulation. Specifically that a ds rom of IX will freeze and corrupt saves at inopportune times. So I am at a loss there.

Disney's Aladdin (Game Gear)

This was a pretty good version.
Nice variety of gameplay with some auto scrolling sections of running/jumping/magic carpet rides and some platforming that feels similar to Prince of Persia.

The game does a really good job of reenacting all the key scenes and lines straight from the movie with the cutscenes.

Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments (PC)

Last year, I was attempting to finish every Sherlock adventure game. I was on a roll but when I got here I had to stop. It was so different that they had dropped the Pt Click Adventure elements and just went into a more logical puzzle. I felt disheartened to continue.

But that was a year ago.

After sitting on my desktop for half a year, it is finally done. It probably took awhile to disassociate myself from the zany pt click elements. While I appreciate this new modernized Sherlock, obviously inspired by the recent tv show and its Mind Palace style of deduction, I still kind of miss the random crossover adventures and even that last one which was quite original. By contrasts this one was just a bunch of short stories strung together and having read some of these stories already the conclusion was pretty much obvious. Although I'd like to think this is Frogwares' attempt at testing the engine, seeing as the next game is a full on single case. EDIT: Okay, I'm just reading about it right now. It isn't. lol

Still. The environments look great, even better than anything before it. The Unreal Engine probably had something to do with that. I'm also a little disillusioned by the notion that this game is still taking place in the same continuity as it references previous adventures and yet the Sherlock now looks nothing like the Sherlock then. Strangely enough, they do this in the next game anyway so there's hardly a point.

Excellent game I'll still admit. Just miss the old style. Time to finish the last one soon. Maybe Frogwares will get back to Sherlocking when they release their Cthulhu open world game.

Deponia for PS4

I realized based on art, subtitle font, and music that this had to be from the same person/company responsible for the Edna & Harvey series. While it isn't as funny, I do like how Deponia follows suit and jokes come at the expense of every character with plenty of morbid/dark humor. My main issue was that I hated the main character, but that was mitigated with him being far and away the most frequent recipient of punishment.

I own the entire collection on Steam, so hopefully I can pick up where I left off and not have to re-do the first game.

If you hate the main character, I sincerely worry for you if you plan to finish all 4 games. The fact that he's hateable is the point according to the devs, and thats not changing for the better.

Normally, an unlikable main protagonist would be a deal-breaker in a point-and-click adventure, but like you said, it is clear that he was intentionally made that way, they make him pay throughout the game for his actions. However, the end of the first game seems to suggest that he will undergo some character development and might be less of a self-centered asshole as the series goes on.

Replay.
It's been a good number of years since I last played this one.
This replay was nice cause I replayed it this time with a friend via online multiplayer from start to finish and I met up with him consistently to playthrough it together. It was even better cause he was going in blind.
Playing solo by yourself is ok like your usual Metal Gear playthrough, but with multiplayer the game is a lot more fun and easier.

This concludes my Sherlock Holmes run started 2 years ago. It's a ride, that's all I can say mostly about this. Like, it looks great. I didn't even mind the QTEs but it was like a beautiful ride. You can't do anything and mostly just go through the motions of it. I don't want to hate it. But I have to on the principle that it paled simply from its predecessors. They fucking turned Sherlock into a 30-year old dad ugh.

And the final part would've been so much better if the fucking title didn't dangle it in front of you all the time.
