SwapQuest for PS4

Bought it over a year ago despite middling reviews because of its concept. I can understand why people didn't take to it, but I enjoyed it. Boss battles overstayed their welcome and could be infuriating, but the main levels were fun.

Blaster Master Zero 2 (Switch)

In some ways, this game is a little better than the first Blaster Master Zero (which is still a good game by the way).

For starters, they turned the difficulty up a small notch.

One thing I dislike about the game is this one planet you go to that has instant death hazards and it can get annoying having to start from your previous checkpoint/save. It's not too bad if you take your time. Have to dock a point off just for that.

You have to be a little more smart when it comes to using your weapons in the overhead dungeons. They cool down and you can't stick with a single one which encourages you to use your other weaponry instead of sticking with just one weapon while your other weapon recharges. The counter is also really neat and it will save you in most fights. Successful counters can also recover your Splasher and Wide Blaster weapons.

I like that they put a lot more bosses for you to fight in G-Sophia (your tank).

The sprite work in this game is amazing.

The soundtrack could of been a bit better IMO. There's a few tracks I like while the rest of the tracks are just there.

The final boss sequence near the end of the game is awesome and the ending feels like they left it open for a sequel, which would be cool cause Blaster Master Zero seems like it can be built as a potential franchise.

If you liked Blaster Master Zero, by all means get the sequel. I recommend it.

I have minimal experience with the NES games this took inspiration from, but I feel like it didn't take enough quality of life improvements over the years. Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I can only take so many times falling to my depth thanks to the game simultaneously requiring and being finicky about directional jumping.

Zombotron (PC)

The Steam one, not the Flash game one. This is what the devs have been doing for 5 years since. Well, it's fucking broken I tell you. Devs need to address this game's physics. Things like, bosses getting stuck, or if struggling to edge on a ledge, the game thinks you're falling and will register fall damage when you get up.

It felt like the Flash game classic all over again, at least for the first 2 chapters. And then the difficult enemies came in Chapter 3 and a ridiculously broken boss fight which I only managed to beat because it got stuck. It shot one-hit-kill rockets in THREES and had a constant pouring of minions from both sides. Then Chapter 4 came and it introduced one-hit-kill robots. Great. Then by Chapter 5 it wasn't even trying to hide its cheese anymore. Grunts who shot weapons like yours except they didn't have the recoil and encumberance you had. They also appear to know you're there even if it's offscreen. I died a dozen cheap deaths from this chapter before I finally got to the end.

Only to find a cheap ass cliffhanger. Fuck.

Wrath of the Black Manta (NES)

Ancient replay.
I feel this game is underrated/underappreciated.

You play as Black Manta and have to go around the world rescuing children from the criminal organization known as DRAT (Drug Runners And Terrorists)

You can toss shurikens and use a short sword up close to enemies similar to Shinobi.
You have Ninpo Arts at your disposal and are used when you hold B for a few seconds and release the button while holding a corresponding direction on the D-Pad. You earn more Ninpo Arts when you complete a level. You can also switch between different Ninpo Arts at any time.
A neat thing you can do is interrogate certain enemies (they are colored red) to get more information and know more about the game's plot.
The Art of Invisibility is the most busted Ninpo Art in the game. You can pass through most things with it.

The only hard part about the game is the final boss. You have to use 4 different Ninpo Arts to defeat him but once you know what Arts to use it's not bad.

I recently learned the Japanese version of this game is very different.
Ninja Cop Saizou has an extra level, different graphics, different bosses and even a different soundtrack. I'll be sure to check it out soon.

The Amazing Spider-Man (Game Boy)

Mary Jane has been kidnapped and Spider-Man has to go rescue her.
The following rogue gallery of villains you face off against
---
Mysterio
Hobgoblin
Scorpion
Rhino
Dr. Octopus
Venom (he looks a little ridiculous in the cutscene)

The cutscenes where Spider-Man speaks to the villains via walkie talkie are amusing.
The title screen theme has a nice rendition of the Spider-Man TV Theme from the 60's composed by David Wise.
Game is a side-scroller with some wall crawling segments to mix up the action.
The bosses are all pretty easy once you know what to do against them.
While the game is not one of the worst, it's not too bad once you know how to operate it.

Feels good to finally beat a game you played as a kid and can finally put it behind you.

Ninja Cop Saizou (Famicom)

The Japanese version for Wrath of the Black Manta is really neat.

Game was easy enough to go through without knowing Japanese due to my prior experience with the American version.

It seemed to have a similar story except you're not rescuing your master's top student but to put a stop to the evil organization. It also has different cut scenes.

The OST for the game is pretty good. I think I almost like it more than Wrath of the Black Manta's OST. (it's still a good OST regardless)

There were a few different graphics for the enemies and the level one boss looked totally different. He also has a new attack for you to avoid.

Black Manta also has a cool high jump animation in this version.

Some of your Ninpo Arts got switched around for whatever reason but it was an easy adjustment.

It did indeed have an extra level that was left out of the American version.

There is a Boss Rush at the end of the game. In the American version you had a choice of facing any of the previous bosses and only had to defeat one of them to move on to the final boss. You have to defeat all 5 to move on to the final boss. That alone makes it a little more difficult to contend with than the American version.

There are 4 different bosses not in the American version so it was new to me. 2 of the bosses remained the same (The 3 Ninja/Totem boss and the 3 Robots from the American version) Even the last boss was different and you can take down the boss however you want without that hostage/using 4 specific Ninja Arts nonsense. The last boss was most similar to Mega Man 2's final boss The evil head of the organization turns into an Alien that looks almost similar to the Xenomorph and he has a similar pattern to Dr. Wily's alien form.

I think I like Wrath of the Black Manta a little more. Ninja Cop Saizou is still worth checking out.

Pankapu for PC

It was a throw-in for some Steam key bundle somewhere I think, but I thoroughly enjoyed this. I was initially put off by its floatyness, but that was by design as they managed to make the platforming and puzzles conform to. I's striking visual design and mood/atmosphere created by the soundtrack remind me of Ori in a way. I probably won't get all the collectibles, but I will at least entertain the thought.

Nancy Drew 15: The Creature of Kapu Cave (PC)

Geez. I don't know if this is worse than Danger by Design but the two will share a space on the bottom. While the last game was obviously padded and added an unnecessary treasure hunt to an otherwise, uncontrollable final solution, this game at least made every action make sense and actually had a culprit amongst the suspects. However, it was still padded by stupidly obnoxious minigames which while are explained (the bad guy used them to keep you busy), was still very shitty to grind in.

By the time the final explanation came around, several facts came to light that I could never have predicted. And the fact that the titurlar Creature didn't fucking exist made me laugh hysterically. See, we only ever see the Creature of Kapu Cave in a sense that WE the gamer would. Nancy never chalks it up, and the Hardy Boys never even encounter it. So really, it was only a Creature in our eyes. Which is stupid.

I sense alot of missed opportunities. 30% of the game is spent completing a hideous bug minigame all because an aloof professor lost her notes. Another 30% is spent doing camping minigames for in-game currency. And the rest? Exploring a sinister cave without any explanation. It had puzzles, but there was no payoff central to the mystery. So weird.

I sincerely believe the development of this game had frayed ideas, tied together to release under a deadline. Definitely one of the weakest of the series.

METAGAL (Switch)

This game is Mega Man: Waifu Edition.

A shame there's no button configuration but it's not bad. The controls that are set are good enough.

After an intro stage, you can tackle a stage of your choice.
You can shoot, jump, dash, and use special weapons. Your special weapons recharge for a bit similar to Vile Mode from Mega Man Maverick Hunter X.

You can also find upgrades that will speed up your recovery of your special weapons, increase your firing rate for your Meta Vulcan, give you more i-frames after taking damage and increase your Meta Vulcan's firing power as well. They were pretty fun to find.

My favorite special weapon in the game is the Warp Bomb. When you fire it at an enemy, it explodes and you trade places with the enemy. I thought it was a pretty cool and innovative weapon.

A few of the level designs were kinda bad but nothing too difficult from your normal Mega Man game.

https://twitter.com/GOGZero1/status/1125148085552726017
^ I got stuck in the ceiling during a screen transition but it's one of those small bugs you might run into. I had to pause and restart the stage again. As long as you're not close to the ceiling, you'll be fine.

Game is a little on the short side (8 Levels) but it was fun while it lasted.

After you beat the game, you get a really nice unlockable You unlock the other GALS you fought in the main game: Gal. 01 Shield, Gal. 02 Dash , Gal. 03 Buster ,Gal. 04 Warp. That's some good replay value there.

METAGAL is also available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, Vita and it's on a budget price. I'd say it's worth checking out if you like anything Mega Man.

I like the historical background of this otome visual novel, but the main character couldn't be more of a doormat if she tried. Not sure how this game got so many spinoffs, adaptions, and remakes as it did if this is the result.

Also, this is apparently only half of the story, so you have to buy another game to get the full storyline. What a great deal.

Goodbye Deponia for PC

I will admit that I never actually cared for the overarching story, but that's common with most video games for me. I'm all about that journey baby. Anyway, this was a great conclusion to the trilogy. I still probably view Chaos as the best, but this isn't far behind. The dark humor might have been even better in this one, though nothing will top the first act or so of Edna & Harvey: Harvey's New Eyes.

It's a good thing the whole dead kids bit was done off-screen.

Oh Man, this game has been with me since forever. But I was always too scared to play it. Now I have and I don't regret it being kept this whole time. I was going to play Downfall, but I hear that it's been remade. With significant changes. Maybe I'll just watch an LP of the original after playing the remake.

And then. The real reason I actually wanted to play this game, was because of Lorelai's sudden appearance. I had thought the author had long forgotten about his games but I'm glad to see he has made yet another. It is nice to see some follow-up from the relic ages of pre-Steam.

Dora the Explorer: The Search for Pirate Pig's Treasure (GBA)

My incentive for playing this game was due to the Achievement of the Week event at Retro Achievements, which was to get all the coins when collecting all the keys for Pirate Pig's Treasure. Swiper No Swiping!
It's a platformer and your main goal is to find 3 Stars to finish the end of the level. Dora can use a ball to break down barriers, water seeds with a watering can to make them grow into flower springs for you to jump on, use a flashlight to see in dark caves (it's not even that dark, it's more like a darker tint and it's easy to see without the flashlight) and use an umbrella to protect her from the rain from rain clouds. When going for a few key items, you'll encounter Swiper sometimes and have to mash the B button to stop him from swiping.

This game followed the source material really well.

Spec Ops: The Line (PS3)

I can understand that people say the gameplay is nothing amazing, but considering how long it has been since I've played a (cover-based) third-person shooter, I enjoyed it quite a bit. I played it on Normal, and was pretty surprised with how tough it was. Can't imagine what it's like on the hardest difficulty level.

Story-wise...I don't know. I can understand what they were going for, but it never really hit home to me. Maybe it was because the gaps between play sessions were too big, but most of the story notes kinda went over my head and I didn't really have a clue what I was doing. Maybe that was the point? In that case, I feel like the point probably could have been made a bit better. I liked the choice aspect of it though; more games should do this. You don't need a huge dialog wheel or something; just the occasional choice to give you a feeling of interactivity with your character.

Shadowrun Returns for PC

They nailed the atmosphere, and I thought it was neat that they blended cyberpunk with standard fantasy races (orcs, elves, and dwarves). I'm not too well-versed in RPGs, but I think you would call this a CRPG? Anyway, I think it was paced nicely for being an RPG and there were some good twists thrown in the plot. My main issue was that it seemed like for all the various attributes you could invest in, it seemed like the game didn't really take advantage of many of them. I'm glad that I mostly made my troll a tank (and supplemented him with mostly support class runners) as things like decking and hacking seemed to have very limited uses in the game, but I feel like I shouldn't have invested in charisma like I did.

I own some of the other Shadowrun games, so I might give them a whirl in the summer.

Assassin's Creed: Odyssey (PC)

Same comments as Origins. Beautiful. But soulless. I play it mainly because I begrudgingly like it. This one though, is just way too big but at least it had fast travel unlike say GTA V. Probably the strongest aspect of this game is the story. Which isn't saying much. It's very touching when you get the best ending possible. It's even more for me that I didn't know they were based on decisions made an hour ago for the life of me.

Dunno if I'll ever play the DLCs. I hear the first one is more of the same. I think I'll play More of The Same some other time.

Oh and if it's one thing I really loved about this game, it's Socrates. Just Socrates.

I always get a kick out of seeing people from another country have a game take place in the US. Memento Mori (PC)

Continuing my adventures in mediocre pt-click Broken Sword clones of the 2000s is this gem. Shallow. Generic. And then suddenly the final chapter takes a most ridiculous turn. Turns out that The Angel of Death set the entire thing up to prevent a machine that x-rays paintings from discovering his own existence via a series of paintings that kill people when owned and that the protagonist was being set-up by masquerading as his dead brother in the form of a hallucination. And then they defeat him by choosing NOT to commit suicide because of course being the Angel of Death he was all about Death and shit. It's so utterly ridiculous, I thought I'd put the spoiler tags up for anyone who cares to play this obscure pt click adventure.

Oh even better. It has a sequel.

It's not so cliche anymore when it's happening to you.

Battlestations: Pacific (360)

I can totally see what they were going for, but it never really hit it for me. I think the tactical parts of the game were not really delved into enough, especially in-game. I guess I'm used to ingame tutorials now rather than going into the game (or the manual lol) to learn how to play the game. Planes were fun, but boats and especially subs were painful to control and aim with. The Sub on Patrol mission is one of the least amounts of fun I've had in a video game in a long time.

How paralyzingly dull, boring and tedious!
