Road to Ballhalla for PC

Fun, sometimes infuriating game in the vein of Marble Madness with a rhythmic twist and a great sense of humor. It's way too hard for me to think about attempting to do everything though.

I have RETURNED!

I've been playing FF6 (GBA) and it's finally done! Dragon's Den and everything.

I actually almost beat this baby years ago but stopped at Kefka's tower because I was too scared of fighting the 3 statues and Kefka himself. So here I am wrapping things up. Took awhile though, especially with the grinding. My quest to finish every FF (except maybe 2 and 8) is a long ways to go. My next stop is XII and then the newer FFs. So there's that.

But for now, its back to other things. JRPGs can be draining sometimes.

Final Fantasy IV (Android)

Bought this years ago and finally decided to start playing it on my commute to work. I kinda like this style where it's an old school JRPG but it's in 3D and has some voiced cutscenes. Overall the game itself was alright; I don't really get the hype around it. The characters are ok but it was a bit annoying how most of the playable cast "die" and then come back. The story seemed pretty standard too, so maybe it just hasn't aged very well.

Not sure what to play next on my phone. After Years seems like it'll be the natural option but it's not on sale and it's kinda expensive on Google Play.

Mickey Mousecapade (NES)

Replay.
A little fun but short game.

Pretty interesting they have different characters in the US/Japanese versions. The game is still the same no matter the region.

US Bosses
---
The Wizard/Witch Hazel (in some sources)
Tick-Tock the Crocodile
Snake (looks like Kaa the Snake from The Jungle Book)
Peg-Leg Pete
Maleficent

Japanese Bosses
---
Chesire Cate
Pat the Dodo (Alice in Wonderland)
Caterpillar (Alice in Wonderland)
Captain Hook
Queen of Hearts

It's also pretty neat that there's a Hidden Mickey inside the cartridge's circuit board.

Besides the obvious gameplay change from 2D to 3D, not much changed in the remake here. Very similar to Shinovi Versus in gameplay, which isn't really a good thing, though I still enjoyed it for what it was.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen (NDS)

Beat the final boss with a pretty lucky crit, but I'm not complaining! Kind of hard to go back to these games...it's hard to fathom there was a time that I loved playing jRPGs like these but nowadays...the random encounters, coupled with the sense of "yeah you find out where you need to be going bruh" just made it a chore at times. It also didn't help that I didn't really feel the combat system was very interesting, neither in combat system or the build of characters.

Props to their attempt to give all the NPCs characters and accents. Props to the idea of giving all the party members their own chapter to develop their own character (although this is kinda made undone by none of the characters really doing anything at all once you get the Hero). Props to the technical aspects of this game. But I don't think I'd ever replay it, or do post-game content.

Replay.
It's been a good number of years since I last played this one.
My incentive to replay it was for Achievement of the Week over at Retro Achievement which was to beat the Death Egg Zone.
I took it a step further. Did Doomsday Zone and got all the Super Emeralds as Sonic (with Tails).

This still holds up really well today as one of the best Sonic games around.

Nancy Drew 14: Danger By Design (PC)

It's okay. Most of the puzzles were original, but it wasn't as heavy. It was surprisingly shorter than most of the other adventures. But what really got me is the twist. I don't know what to say; it's actually kind of funny. Like, the bad guys had nothing to do with what you were doing and so the game decided to give you a completely unrelated treasure hunt from yet another old faux-historical figure like it couldn't break the formula of the previous games. A bulk of the game's challenge was spent on doing some pretty boring chores for a couple of people. Nice twist though as it turns out none of your NPCs were the culprits, given the context of Nancy's original mission.

Kingdom Hearts III (PS4) - Platinum'd

Finally got around to grinding out the last dozen or so trophies I needed for the platinum over the weekend. For a game that I've been waiting to play for so long, I'm actually kinda glad that it didn't disappoint. It's not the best game in the series but I thoroughly enjoyed playing it and think the story wrapped up pretty well as well. The platinum also wasn't too hard to do, considering how the combat is fairly easy, but it was a bit annoying how there were so many damn minigames. I love Kingdom Hearts, but I honestly think the minigames are probably the worst thing about it.

Overall, I think I still like KH2 and BBS more though. KH3 is probably tied with KH1 for third place.

In classic Kingdom Hearts fashion I'm also equal parts confused and hyped after watching the secret ending.

Far Cry New Dawn (PC)

Lol. Ubisoft's attempt at making a Borderlands clone fails because it's an Ubisoft game after all. The story was ordinary, predictable, and I would only recommend it if you've played FCV if only because You finally get to shoot Joseph Seed, yourself. Other than that, well, it's a nice nostalgic trip seeing characters and locales you've been to before albeit there is now less incentive to visit them as they all give kind of useless resources. At least Primal tried its best to be palatable. I feel like this game had wasted potential and calling it a spin-off as an excuse is unfortunate.

I used a SourcePort btw, that's how I was able to play it.

I didn't know DOOM64 was more focused on horror than the rock n roll shooter it was built up to be. That said, I wish it wasn't 80% set in hell, but there were some unique things you wouldn't normally see in a DOOM game like the lightning effects, unique triggers, stages that morphed behind your back. It was a step in a certain direction that I wish was explored more.

Ashen (PC)

I love it. It's different enough from Dark Souls that it stands out and it plays much better than any wannabe Dark Souls clone. I also love how its tone takes a complete 180 from Dark Souls' premise. You're ushering in a new world, the people you meet are given hope, and almost no one dies. Mechanically, there are some UI stuff I like. You can see items in the form of tiny markers that don't detract from the gameplay. The waypoints are sufficiently starved apart. Money purely goes into upgrading your weapons. And it's just fun to see your town center grow each time you return there. No loading times whatsoever unless it's fast travel, you die, and the one major dungeon in the game. I guess if I had one thing to say about it, it's that the enemies and bosses are mostly human. But unlike Dark Souls 2, this is just par for the lore.

It is very strange this game has received little to no fanfare since it came out. Much like Hob.
EDIT: Oh right, its on the Epic store, that's why

SINNER: Sacrifice for Redemption (PC)

The other other Dark Souls game for 2018. Wish I played this one first, because it's worse than Ashen. It's like if someone decided to create a Dark Souls fangame, creating only the boss fights and decided "okay, that's the game." I love how shallow and nonsensical the pretentious plot is, as if to pad out the game for what it is. Its offering of its unique premise of sacrificing stats to eventually beat the game is interesting, but not enough to hold any sway.

Mega Man: Battle Chip Challenge (GBA)

Got to the credits earlier with Dex, gonna progress past and eventually get through Master challenge with everyone just to say I've done so. Kind of funny that I did that as Dex, but honestly never used Gutsman past like... E tournament. Once I had Metalman and Skullman they were just better, then I had Quickman and plenty of good elemental navis that there's nothing Gutsman does that others don't do better.

Turboman I think will be the same way, but pretty sure the rest have their own benefits.

Pajama Sam: No Need To Hide When It's Dark Outside for PC

I was big on Humongous Entertainment games in the 90s/early 00s, but that was strictly with Backyard sports, Putt-Putt, and Freddi Fish. I had never played a Pajama Sam game. Sure, I'm almost 30, but I can appreciate a game meant for people 20+ years younger than me! I'm not sure if Putt-Putt did this, but I know Freddi Fish did some slight procedural generation, and I like how Pajama Sam follows suit.

I will admit that I actually to look up a guide for one thing, and it was stupid because in the room with all the doors and knobs everywhere, I had no idea there was a hallway to the right. lol me.

One of several games I bought in the recent Steam winter sale that I will be posting here shortly, they got a lot of mileage out of a simple concept of using a 5x5 grid and having you light up a few designated spots. Overall, I liked this game, but it is one of those one-and-done games even though it encourages you to play again for alternate endings. It's just too exhausting to want to go through again. It's one of the most overwhelming games that I've played in recent years.

As a side note, I was wrong when I thought the composer was also responsible for Party Hard's music. It was done by the Witcher 3 guy instead!

100ft Robot Golf for PC

A lot about this game is aces. The intentionally bad voice acting (aside from the announcers since those were done by actual radio people) and dumb sense of humor are a noticeable improvement over No Goblin's previous work in Roundabout. I would love to see a dedicated show for this.

While both games have an excellent sense of style and clear time and effort put into them, both games also struggle in the gameplay department in various ways. In 100ft Robot Golf, maneuvering with robots, destroying the environments, and disrupting the shots of your opponents never gets old. Unfortunately, the golfing is kind of bad. That probably won't be a problem for most people, but golfing is one of the few sports that I still buy video games of, so I'm not one to give people free passes for mediocre execution in what is usually a zen-like experience for me. Driving is fine, but chipping and putting are awful, and a huge reason why is because the game doesn't give proper indication of things like elevation on the greens. Fortunately, the game has no fail states, so you can suck and the game still moves forward.

Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition (PS4)
Beat the main story, did a bit of side content but not that much during the main game (to be honest, that all seemed rather hidden).

Overall, a good Tales game. Has all the good and iffier elements of the series, but probably more of the good stuff. However, I feel a bit done with Tales of games for a while. Nothing has topped Symphonia for me yet because they all deliver basically the same kind of experience (unsurprisingly, the series likes its staples) and Symphonia was of course my first Tales game. I do think I like Vesperia more than Xillia, but it may be equal to or just below Abyss for me. I may finish Berseria in the future as well, that one was also good as far as I've played it.

Nibiru: Age of Secrets (PC)

AKA budget Broken Sword. It's a 5/10. To my utter frustration and disappointment, I was raging when I realized in the first 5 minutes that the game engine used here was the same for Black Mirror 1 which I played 2 years ago. So...no running, featureless stages, "puzzles" that involve talking and examining the same thing over and over while backtracking. Yeah, not fun at all.

Fortunately, this game wasn't so bad. Unlike Black Mirror, it didn't all take place in one big location so the backtracking was at best a few screens. What this is though is just boring. This game came out in 2004(?) and Broken Sword 1 came out in 1996 so it has no excuse. There are moments in the game that felt like padding and the plot didn't know where to settle. Then the ending was just hilariously copped out.

This game ranks somewhere on the bottom alongside Still Life 2 for crappy adventure games

Spy Fox in Dry Cereal for PC

Now I have played the other big Humongous Entertainment game series that I hadn't before. This is definitely designed for a slightly-older crowd than Pajama Sam, but it also feels a little half-baked. Maybe the sequels provide a more fulfilling experience.

I want to take about the BS that is the Go Fish game. I played it not knowing it was optional (same thing happened with tic-tac-toe in Pajama Sam). Five times the guy asked for a card I did not possess only to pick it up from the pile and go again. Somehow, we managed to tie.

Aesthetically reminds me of Bastion but far more surreal (for obvious reasons if you've played the game). A bit limited in combat, though I was a little impressed with its puzzles. It took me an embarrassing amount of time to figure out the organ though. It bills itself as a musical adventure of sorts, and it was endearingly bad-ish. I don't know how else to describe its singing. It was weird, not good, but I liked it quite a bit.
