It is really simple. Just post each time you beat a game throughout the year and the platform you played it on. Do not hesitate to add some discussion in regards to the games you or others beat.

At the bottom of this post is a link to a Google word doc that you are free to edit to immortalize your gaming accomplishments. Feel free to tinker with your color and font options, but do know that users are supposed to be in alphabetical order.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VY5zHA1uwxve8-WqiA58BYH1qZFdBxTU1IvZ3W4OSWs

I took the liberty of using our first report of a beaten game to show a little flair (if you can even call it that) so people know that they have full freedom over how they want to present themselves on the Google doc. It is open to edits to anyone who desires. GOGZero, you are free to change it to whatever you want if the white on green is not your style, you don't like the use of the numbered list function, or whatever I did that may have displeased you.

Abzu (PS4)

Started off the new year by cleaning up the rest of the trophies I needed for this game. It's pretty much underwater Journey and was a pretty good experience. I think overall I liked Journey a bit more since Abzu is a bit lacking in the gameplay department, but it's a pretty visually stunning game. Plus I really like aquatic things so it was cool to see so many different types of fish.

Starting off the new year with Yakuza Kiwami 2 (PS4)

While it does lack the different fighting styles in the previous Kiwami, it makes up for it with the seamless transitions in both Sotenbori and Kamurocho, and a much better storyline, which some have said is the best in the series.

Shantae (Game Boy Color)

I played this series in a weird order.
Pirate's Curse was the first game I played in the series.
Followed by Risky's Revenge then going to Half-Genie Hero.

Was pretty nice to see how it all began.
Playing it on GBA Mode was really pleasing on the eyes. I liked how the color palette looked brighter and sharper. I can tell this game really pushed the Game Boy Color to the limit when the Game Boy Color was going out the door. Graphics and animations were pretty good.

Gameplay was good. After learning the first transformation, it took me a little getting used to on how to transform with the rhythm. It was kinda neat it had a Day/Night system ala Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest and how it affected enemies take more hits and finding optional Fireflies.

It was good stuff

I played it in an odd order too. Risky's Revenge > Shantae > Pirate's Curse.

That being said, I beat Pirate's Curse before Risky's Revenge. I didn't bother beating the original one. The frustratingly small hit box and stiffness (which negatively affected combat and platforming) just wasn't worth going through the game in its entirety.

Starting my year off is Dragon Quest 2 (Android)

I mean, its better than DQ1 at least. I'm not complaining about the grinding in this game which is weird because I hate FF3 for the same reasons. My only gripe is the totally unfair final boss and his RNJesus.

Iconoclasts (PC)

It has the same strengths and weaknesses as Owlboy, but done a little bit better. It has a great story, amazing boss fights, lovable and lovable-to-hate characters, and a great setting and direction. But it seems mired by its pseudo-metroidvania style of play. It's gameplay mechanics are in a way that invites backtracking and collectible puzzle solving but it in no way encourages you and in fact bog you down at times. The puzzles are often hit or miss and the direction of where to go can sometimes be distracting. That said, the pacing was proper if not a bit carrot over stick and the end was worth it anyway unlike say Owlboy who just almost looked like it ran out of money by the end.

Lumo for Xbox One

An isometric puzzle game with essentially a fixed camera will lead to numerous, frustrating deaths. Beyond that, it was a solid, if unspectacular, throwback to games from before my time.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (NS)

I kinda bought this on a whim recently and what a great purchase it turned out to be. So much fun! Very little nonsense, pure gameplay and good difficulty balance between just finishing a level and completing it. Lots of level variety and dealing with the various stage gimmicks had a nice curve in difficulty as the game progressed. It looks beautiful and has a very catchy soundtrack as well.

Definitely a bit of a hidden gem. It's still Nintendo so hidden is a strong word, but it's absolutely more than just a quick little minigame cash in.

PS. I haven't beaten all the bonus stages yet, only the first. So technically it's maybe not really beat yet, but oh well. I'm actually happy there's more to do, I'll savor what's left. I did fully complete the rest of the books.

Four Last Things for PC

I received this as part of my Steam Secret Santa haul from Lolo Guru, and it was a short, funny, and somewhat disturbing point-and-click adventure featuring an amalgamation of public domain paintings. I tend to be very particular about my PnCs, and this one passed with flying colors.

Cool game. Obviously it's super duper light on story and pretty much all of the dialogue is tossaway, but the level design is cool and this kind of game just doesn't get made anymore. It's fun. I like it.

D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die for XB1

This is the third of three games that I set out to beat in my Game Pass trial, so mission accomplished. There's a good game in there, but the awful UI (and poor visual cues in general), try-hard approach, and just a vast amount of unnecessary elements (you could cut credits, stamina/all those stats, and most collectibles and nothing of value would be lost) held it back.

Detroit: Become Human (PS4) - Platinum'd

Went on a bit of a Quantic Dream spree over the last couple of months. Just finished up the platinum for Detroit and I think this is my favourite of the three I played. Characters are interesting and the story is presented in such a nice way. The game is beautiful too, which is definitely a plus. I can definitely see some of the complaints people have with the game, but overall I thought it was a pretty awesome experience.

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation (Android)

So I hear that this is basically Japan's holy grail JRPG. Not bad. I love it. It's probably the closest thing to a Japanese Ultima. They fixed the issues behind the grinding. And the job system is to die for. It is archaic but it is the first. The final boss took a few tries though, and the secret boss a whole lot of grinding tries.

Mega Man 11 (Nintendo Switch)

Mega Man is back!
This installment has a lot going for it.
Played it on Normal and I got bodied a lot for my first playthrough. I enjoyed that feeling.

It took me a good 30 to 40 minutes to take down my first Robot Master: Block Man
I only managed to figure out 5 out of 8 weaknesses. One weapon I used on one particular Robot Master I thought I figured out turned out it wasn't the weakness but it did the job. Tundra Storm did a surprising amount of damage on Blast Man despite the fact it was not his weakness

The Double Gear System was pretty neat.It helped me out in quite a lot of situations.
Also pretty cool how it was fit into the story as well. Mega Man isn't really known for it's story but it's there and I thought it was ok.
Guard Breaking with the Mega Buster on the shielded enemies to break their defenses was satisfying.
This installment probably has one of the best set of Mid Bosses in the series IMO and they all felt challenging. The one in Impact Man's level gave me the most trouble until I figured it out.

My favorite levels were Blast Man and Bounce Man.
Favorite Robot Master: Tundra Man. "ELEGANCE!"
Favorite Weapons that stood out to me: Chain Blast (Power Gear), Bounce Ball, Block Dropper, Pile Driver, Acid Barrier

The only things I personally didn't like was the soundtrack and the final few stages. The style of the soundtrack all felt "samey". None of the tracks really clicked with me. I'll have to go back and listen to them again for a second opinion (I'll also give the instrumental themes a listen as well). Also, I felt that the final Fortress stages they were basically "phoning it in". They could of fit in at least one more level IMO.

Not sure where I would rank it in my rankings in the series but it would be somewhere in the top middle.
Overall, Mega Man 11 was pretty solid all around.

If you have sound effects at their standard volume, they're so loud that they drown out the music, and it all sounds the same. I actually like the soundtrack after I actually listened to it.

The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human (PC)

Pretty cool. Decent metroidvania/shadow of the colossus mashup. Yet another undersea endgame scenario and the horrors that come with it much like SOMA though not the exact reasons behind it. It did get kind of bullet hellish by the end and some bosses were just downright unfair. The best parts of the game were the calm sequences between bosses, whereby you are just told and shown what happened to humanity years after the ice caps melted.

As said in GotM, it's a game I tried to quench some nostalgia for JSRF, but alas only made me think about how little I had in problems for that game. It has its moments of fun, and a few maps are pretty cool when they're all fleshed together. I mostly dislike Kogane-cho, however. Not great looping around there.

Being that World of Light is pretty long and it has Credits at the end, I would say it totally counts compared to say, going through Classic mode.

Little Nemo: The Dream Master (NES)

Replay.
I had an incentive to replay this game again. Over at Retro Achievements, there's an event that's held weekly called Achievement of the Week. Thus, AotW was to beat Little Nemo.

Good Capcom licensed game. You play as Nemo and you use Candy to feed animals to ride on/take on their forms to use their powers to find keys throughout the level. Stage 3 The House of Toys and the second section of Stage 8: Nightmare Land has got to be the hardest levels in the entire game. The Mouse form needed a lot more testing if you ask me. The hammer's hitbox on trying to break blocks with the Mouse form is a pain having to be at a certain distance to break blocks.

Stage 8: Nightmare Land is such a nice refreshing change of pace at the end with the gameplay. You no longer have to search for keys and you get to use the Morningstar (scepter) as a means of attack.

Minit for PC

Digi gave me this as a birthday gift almost a week ago

87 runs
71% collection (totally missed most of the coins and tentacles)
73:35:85

I ran into huge problems at the factory. I wouldn't be surprised if more than a third of my runs and quarter of my playtime was spent just there.

I would definitely like to play more games like this and The Sexy Brutale with the Groundhog Day time mechanic and a decently sized area with plenty of warping opportunities.

Got the second, true ending. Holy shit. Just holy shit. I put this game too low on my GotY list. I put it at 7 but it should have been in my top 5. Probably not #1 but a contender for 2 at the least.

So, here are some massive series plot spoilers that occur in the last cut scene of the game.

You play as Erdrick this entire game and it's a title that is bestowed on you by a dragon that is the true form of Yggdrasil. The last thing you see before the credits roll is the Dragon Warrior hero with Sword of Light looking across at the Dragonlord's castle and fuck the FFVII remake, I want a Dragon Warrior remake.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen (Android)

This took awhile to beat mainly because I got bored halfway. Perhaps the gimmick of playing your party's backstory was a novelty then but it got boring real fast. And by the time you play as the hero, the world would have been thoroughly explored, leaving the Ultima aspect of the game quite lacking. The bad guy makes no sense. I mean at least the previous games had evil for evil's sake but this one tried to do something different and it fell flat. I beat the secret 6th chapter too which didn't give as much a challenge but at least wasn't as cheap as the third game.
