5. Beat a game released in 2019

What Never Was

What It Is: Half hour exploring a small attic and really wanting to play Guitar-Piccolo, The Legend of Merida, and various other knockoff games. I think there was even an Illusion of Gaia one! Excite!

- Quick, decent, feels nothing more than a free to play demo for bigger point-and-click adventure further down the line. Not terrible, but not exciting either.

Moved Thirty Flights of Loving from 39 to 4. 2010-2018

#39. Finish a game in one day

Unheard

What It Is: Timeloop detective story solving mysteries through listening to multiple conversations and figuring out what happened.

- It was solid at first, but both too short, too easy, and too forgiving. The concept is cool, analyzing a crime scene by studying all the conversations that took place before what happened and determining who knew what, or didn't. A cool auditory logic puzzle, but I wish there were both more cases, more difficult cases, and more implied supernatural/hallucinatory elements. It was pretty fun for what it was, but I must say, the voice acting in the last case was... it was something. One character was a really really horrible Natasha accent, and another... it was a great Matt Dillon impression from There's Something About Mary.

HALFWAY RANKINGS!!!

BEST
1. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel

FANTASTIC
2. Life is Strange: Before the Storm
The Talos Principle
Batman: Arkham City
Dragon Age: Origins
Heartbeat

GREAT
3. Risk of Rain 2
Sonic Mania
4. Risen
For The King
5. Supraland
6. Thronebreaker

GOOD
Flame in the Flood
7. Dragon Quest II
8. Dragon Quest IV
Dragon Quest
Epic Battle Fantasy 5

OKAY
9. Ninja Pizza Girl
The Last Word
10. Unheard
11. SEGA Bass Fishing
12. Glass Masquerade
Caravan
13. What Never Was

BAD
Thirty Flights of Loving
Evoland

EDIT: Notes on the Dragon Quest rankings... yeah, definitely seems a bit odd not only having them all clumped together, but also II the highest. Well, II Mobile was a lot of fun figuring things out with enough help that I wouldn't want to kill myself like I would playing the original release. There were some good quality of life improvements I appreciated. And while I like the cast of DQIV, that's really all I liked about it yet not enough to consider them really great, feeling more like generic party members after their original chapters than I'd have liked. And Dragon Quest was a bit of a slog, but a good amount of difficulty and figuring things out.

30/52

I dropped this after one level back when it launched because it really hurt my wrist. 7 years later I can safely say that I'm a fucking idiot for putting off this game for so long. Only real complaint I have is that this would have been better as a WiiU game as controlling the land battle camera with a second stick would be better than using the stylus.

17. Beat a first-person shooter

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines

It's a first person game with guns, good enough for me!

Of course I used a Tremere, so it was a lot less guns and a lot more overpowered blood magic, but still! Still a fantastic game, though. I'm not sure whether to be excited for the sequel or not. Tthat's probably my second favorite setting in any video game, but my first is Planescape:Torment, and I still haven't even played Tides of Numenera (or the other Vampire: The Masquerade game, for that matter.)

Wow, what a game. I enjoyed the first MGS well enough, but this went a step beyond. It's astounding how this game's message and themes actually got more relevant in our current era of political controversy and media corruption. While I don't think I'll ever be a huge fan of the MGS gameplay, this is probably one of my favorite video game plots I've experienced.

Progress Report for Myself since its been two weeks and I'm certain my future self will be curious where I stalled out.

Currently Playing:
- Tales of Berseria: Pretty far into the games, levels around 55-60, just got to an island. Good amount of challenges applicable
- Geneforge: Caught up on last year's file, finally found a way across river, think I'm close to end but always losing progress dying. WRPG?
- Stardew Valley: Gotten about eight more days done since putting it off last year! Wooooooo
- Dragon Quest V: Very near the end I think. Probably finish Monday or Tuesday at work.
- Dragon Quest III: Progress stalled AGAIN because I like Monster Medals and not beating games.

Recently Stall Out:
- Space Channel 5 Part 2: Got and played before Bass Fishing, but too frustrated to get through Level 4
- Nights Into Dreams: It should be relaxing. It isn't.
- Ducktales: For the 80s! Ragequits galore.
- Chip n Dale's Rescue Rangers: For the 90s nostalgia! Ragequits galore.

Abandonware 2019:
- Wargroove: Just got bored of it, no plans to get through next map after multiple attempts (without failing, just getting bored by it).
- Thea The Awakening: Paused in January, no idea what's happening, doesn't fit any categories
- Beholder: Choices are hard

13. Beat a WRPG

Geneforge

What It Is: If LiSA and Monster Rancher created the Powerpuff Girls together on a tiny island filled with warring factions of house elves.

- Spiderweb Software is a company I've been playing games from since the 90s with Exile and Avernum series. I attempted to beat Geneforge some time last year and got about halfway through before I gave up because I wasn't having any fun and wasn't really making any progress. At least thrice I tried my hand at it again, running into frustating traps, powerful foes, and felt completely overmatched by the three routes I knew of to get to the other half of the map.

Turns out that I didn't really need to bust my ass so hard running against a brick wall. After a year absent, I decided to do some minor exploring and backtracking and found two or three other paths I didn't discover by ignoring a few exits from certain towns and zones and adding them to my map. They were zones designed for my character ten levels ago (and I'm at L17 out of 20 or so). I won't say the game became a cakewalk from there because the hardest and most difficult zones were still to come, but just being able to explore new places and finish long-forgotten quests was enough to keep me engaged and powering forward with enough momentum to reach the end (as well as not hoarding every single item I could or trying to save my disposable summons every time).

It's a very good game, and under different circumstances, probably better than the Exile/Avernum series in terms of plot, dialogue, choices, lore, and perhaps combat. Exile is very swords&sorcery traditional with a wide variety of spells and D&D style combat while Geneforge definitely is influenced by the monster hunting strengths of the late 90s/early 00s, but with a much better story than any other one I'd played.

You're a novice Shaper (apprentice spellcaster-adjacent) shipwrecked onto an abandoned island where you begin to encounter slave creatures acting of their own free will without the influence of other Shapers that are long gone. Your main goal is to find a way off the island, but you're pulled into several wars of belief and thought: the Awakened who just want freedom to live how they want; the Obeyers who yearn to be told what to do and follow their masters again; and the Takers who rage against those that abandoned them and want chaos and vengeance. There are people and minds hidden about the world that influence what goes on, plenty of quests and lore, and a pretty good job world building with multiple endings.

If you like old school isometric RPGs, it's quite good and better than I expected.
