38. Beat a game you'd dropped or had a long hold on

The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel

What It Is: Military Academy members deal with high school drama, rigorous study, doing tasks for the cute class president, and travelling across the land to get to know team members and the country better. Also, war, politics, betrayal, magic, technology, magitech, harem anime, gundams, super saiyan ultra instinct, sailor moon cat, rank s demons, and Margarita. Spiritual Sequel to Skies of Arcadia?

- Eighteen games in and this is the second game I finished that I started in 2018 or before (first being Caravan). I really loved the characters a lot more than Trails in the Sky, getting to know all of them and feel for them more than about a third of the old cast. The journeys across the land, the stories told, the adventures had... they were all fun and sometimes shocking. I don't really have words right now for two reasons. The first being... everything after the dance has just been a lot of WTF and I need to play again with new eyes. The second... my last save file before starting Chapter 6 again a few weeks back are from August 2018. I kind of forget a lot of what happened.

And despite ranking this highest of games I've played so far, completing a lot of things and looking to complete everything I missed in a second playthrough, and ready to start a NG+ in moments, I'm super disappointed in one major thing I think they left out that ate up at least three or four hours of my time:

Final exams.

I spent wayyy too much time after that first test in like Chapter 1 or 2 taking detailed notes of every book, event, and class that I thought might have come up in a test at the end. I have pages about Crossbell's economy, the types of vehicle models at Reinford HQ, detailed pictures of country seals, dates for when things that happened, and Erebonian folklore. Yet, we never had to put that knowledge to the test. Ugh, it's like... it's like I studied just to learn stuff and not to get extra AP. Shame on you game for educating me in fictional history.

Trails in the Sky SC > Cold Steel > FC, with The Third as a complete Wild Card.

What's everyone's go-to for deciding what to categorize the game you beat as? Do you just follow the list down, starting with the years? Do you pick whatever you think has the least chance of coming up again (beating an RPG when you don't play many RPGs)? Or do you just pick the first thing that comes to mind?

I mostly go for whatever I think I have the least chance of encountering again in a year.

19. Beat a platformer
Cave Story+

Thank God for OP weapons during that boss rush. Got the normal ending, but I do have access to the final level so I'll play this a little while longer. Didn't really like what I saw when I went down there though...

I don't really play a lot of platformers, but I did enjoy this one. I think it offered enough of a challenge while still being relatively simple. I also went into this thinking it was a Metroidvania, but there really wasn't a whole lot of backtracking and most of the areas were small and contained enough that it wasn't really a bother. Good fun all around!

Similar. I just go with either country of origin or style of gameplay to determine for myself. Epic Battle Fantasy 5, though clearly made in the west with western humor, is undoubtedly a jRPG in combat, menus, progression, and gameplay. I pretty much go with:

Do you create your own character from scratch? Are there multiple origin options? Do you have a lot of freedom to explore where you want with choices that affect the storyline? Is the D&D style progression? Is combat more real-time than turn-based, often without going onto a separate battle screen?
If two or more of these apply, it's probably a WRPG, IMO.

46. Beat a game that features historical events or people

Glass Masquerade

What It Is: An art deco stained glass repair simulator.

- Short but sweet. Thanks, @KCF0107 for the key! It was a lot of fun. The stained glass windows looked really cool and the shapes were difficult to put together sometimes. I finished all the non-DLC puzzles in under 15 minutes so there wasn't a full like 500-piece puzzle challenge... which would be pretty crazy with this, but fun.

As well, I felt playing this like I was putting together one of those Survivor puzzles with all the crazy shapes. It helped that everything automatically locked into place when I got it on the right spot, and that the pieces were turned correctly for me, but man, I felt like I was racing for Immunity sometimes and I don't think I've ever had that feeling in a video game ever. Thanks again!

Under Historical because there are a few people, ancient races, and events depicted.

50b. (Second game in the series)

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen

What It Is: Four short vignettes with comically bad accent translations joining together into an incredibly fun Dragon Quest adventure.

- Definitely a lot of fun and I can understand why a good number of the characters feature across multiple spinoff games like Fortune Street and Dragon Quest Heroes. Beat it over a week ago, but just got wrapped up in other games to post. It was a lot of fun. I'd probably have a better write-up if it were fresher in mind.

6. Beat a game in a completely new series

Risen

What It Is: Commander Shepard is castaway on Koholint and must survive long enough to return the Wind Fish to its slumber and keep the island alive (at the cost of the outside world?).

- Another thanks to @TheArkOfTurus for the Steam key. It was a great struggle early on and in the first fifteen-twenty logged hours (or forty-fifty actual) hours of play. There was a steep power curve to a lot of things and as someone who won't advance the story without searching every nook and cranny available, that led to some really really tough encounters early on that I stubbornly did not back down from. I recall somewhere around level 9 or 10 that I died about fifty times in a row to defeat three ghouls for a box of scraps. Later in the game, I was one shotting those same things without any thought. It was a lot of fun knowing how much danger was lurking and even at the end, fights were still very difficult because a few hits either way ended the fight.

The story was well told and I am so so so very glad there wasn't a weight/inventory limit or else my spirit would have died like in Fallout and Oblivion games. The island was also just big enough that there always seemed to be new paths and places I missed, but compact enough that I never felt too far from actual substance, and the addition of teleports late in the game was a really cool move and much more fun than Quickjumps right from the beginning.

It was a good dungeon crawl/exploration/build up your character kind of game. Would recommend.

47. Play a game that's technically unbeatable for at least six hours

Risk of Rain 2

What It Is: Risk of Rain. In 3D!

- Early alpha and no final boss stuff yet, but with 12 hours logged and likely another 20+, I'm counting this here until, hopefully, things change and I can beat it and move it to 3PS.

46. Beat a game that features historical events or people

Fate/Extella Link

Speaking of games of my kind, I hadn't played a Musou game this year. I guess technically I still haven't, but this is close enough. There's a lot wrong from a story perspective, but coming to this as more of a Musou fan than a Fate fan (although I did enjoy FS/N and the Fate/Zero anime,) that wasn't all that big a deal. As a mowing down giant waves of enemies with a variety of interesting characters game, it worked just fine!

46. Beat a game that features historical events or people

Assassin's Creed: Odyssey

Man this game was good. Beat it with 77 hours, the most I've ever spent (and by far the most I've ever needed to spend) on an Assassin's Creed game, and it's pretty easily the best AC game since Black Flag (possibly even better than Black Flag).

It's HUGE, to the point where it's a little overwhelming. It's not a perfect game; some quests feel really padded in for filler, especially once you've already put it a lot of time. A little too much backtracking for my taste as well, and running from objective to objective can really just get exhausting. But the story, boss fights, environment, exploration, visuals, characters, etc are all some of the best this series has ever had.

17. Beat a first-person shooter

Supraland

What It Is: Sandbox metroidvania puzzle platformer.

I had to restart it the first time I played because I did a few two many sequence breaks and had no idea where anything was, and how no optional equipment to help get me back to areas easily. Then... man, the more things you get, the more the place opens up, and now that I have final upgrades.... gliding around the map is so much fun and feels very earned.

Unlike Talos Principle which had very difficult, precise puzzles, but listed per section of the game, Supraland has fundamentally simple puzzles that can take a frustrating amount of time to figure out, especially since its fairly open ended aside from one or two puzzles needed to complete for the next area.

I think I would recommend it. It's quite a bit of fun.
