4. Beat a game released between 2010-2018
Deponia

I didn't really have anywhere else to put it unless I already want to start reshuffling things. I suppose I could try and go through the trilogy later in the year since it will likely to fulfill that category otherwise.

38. Beat a game you'd dropped or had a long hold on

SanctuaryRPG: Black Edition was a game I'd dabbled with off and on through the years, but I finally knuckled down and powered through it! (partially because I gave up on the whole permadeath thing) Play it if you like the kinda games that use ASCII art in the 21st century. It needs more (any) love imo.

5. Beat a game released in 2019

Slay the Spire

When I heard there was another floor added in the full release, I was hoping there would be a bit more to it than that. Still, it already felt like a complete game, and a very good one at that. This is going to be a game I keep going back to for a long, long time (and one I rebuy immediately when the switch port comes out.)

21. Beat a strategy game

For The King

What It Is: Set off with a team of three heroes to save the king and defeat the chaos plaguing the land!

- Though I haven't tried the single player all that long, the multiplayer was tough but lots of fun even on easy mode. Played with a friend and after multiple attempts over the past month, we finally managed to beat it. It was really good time for co-op with lots of decision-making on how to distribute equipment, where to go, what to do next, and figuring out the bits of the game as it went along. We'll probably play some more times later on to unlock more things, but Kingdom Hearts III comes first for them.

40. Finish a game that took you at least twenty-five hours to beat

Yakuza 0

Significantly more than 25 hours (around 71), considering I finished all the sidequests. I kinda regret doing so in a few cases (I'm a bit late to this particular opinion, but I hate disco now,) but the amount of amazing sidequests made it mostly worth it. The main game was fantastic too, of course. Now on to Kiwami 2.

29. Beat a game with comedy as a central theme

Epic Battle Fantasy 5

What It Is: A team of five ragtag heroes complete fetch quests, catch monsters, solve block puzzles, and gets lots of equipment to save the world.

- Fun, I guess. It overstayed its welcome towards the end, and I got so sick of the grind that I just switched to easy mode to get the final boss out of the way (after spending a good deal of my playtime fighting bosses and superbosses on the hardest difficulty). It was pretty fun exploring the world and growing my team early on, and a lot of the puzzles and secret side areas were fun to find and loot. But the story and characters and moments were just weak and the more stuff it had in it, the more generic it began to feel. It's a good game with some really tough fights, but the best aspect of it was that I could listen to more Critical Role without really needing to be aware of what was going on in-game.

49. Choose a random page on TVTropes and beat something from the video game section

Dragon Age: Origins

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FantasticCasteSystem

What It Is: Dungeons and Dragons.

- That was quite a bit of fun! There were some slow bits (the beginning of the game, Orzammar), but overall one hell of an experience. Lot of nice choice-making elements, too. I know it's Bioware, but I did not expect it to feel as impactful as it did overall. There were a lot of moments where character loss was a real thing, and it made me play careful.

The characters were quite interesting, though pretty normal I suppose. Zevran was the only one I outright hated having around. Leilana was my romance, and she, Morrigan, and Shale were most often my party members. Never got much of a handle on playing the warriors (City Elf Rogue myself) and they seemed to fall more often than my mages and archers in the early and mid game. And of course my doggo was awesome to have around.

I may play again down the line as a different character, probably as a mage, but being a Rogue and being able to unlock everything myself is probably what I love most in these games. I will always put points first and foremost into unlocking/hacking/looting skills, though I don't think I did any pickpocketing.

39. Finish a game in one day

Thirty Flights of Loving

What It Is: Art? I think? Definitely short.

- Uh... I played it, the other game (I guess it would count as a second game, but I won't deign to give this two entries), and then developer commentary expecting more, and then checked around to see if this was it. Apparently, it was. And it had an 88 on Metacritic? What? I'm just...

I don't get the hype. I don't know if it influenced things that came after where looking back after playing things like Life is Strange makes it look like a historic relic, but it was 2012 and I think we had weird artsy non-linear games many times before that.

And because of the way it was structured, how short it was, and that there was a second game unlocked after that was almost just as short... I thought it would've been some kind of deep dive game where you explore and unlock more levels (like thirty of them) and it would be like Portal meets those mid-00s ARGs where to actually beat it, there would be a huge amount of thought and insane puzzles and... ugh, that was just disappointing.

7. Beat a game in a series you've already played some of

Evoland

What It Is: A quick nostalgia trip with basic Zelda and Final Fantasy elements.

- Just bought a bunch of games with the Steam Chinese New Year thing going on, and noticed Evoland Legendary Edition in my library. An Evoland 1+2 bundle, yay!~ Evoland II was the first game I beat last year, and still holds some of the best nostalgia from last year's challenge (Vanishing of Ethan Carter, Witcher, and Crosscode also notable). How does Evoland stack up to its sequel?

Evoland is quick, fairly easy, and feels like a demo for something bigger and better. Evoland II takes what Evoland does and builds so much off of its foundation, essentially creating an entire world and story centered around one of the late game puzzle elements.

It was quick, it was fun for what it was, but it did absolutely nothing new, and was very minimal.

27. Beat a game with mystery as a central theme

The Last Word

What It Is: Clue characters talking people to death.

- Part of me is really tempted to stretch the 'rhythm' definition to apply it to this game, since the battles are all about controlling the tempo of conversation and hitting the right beats. However, the rhythm isn't so much pressing buttons ot music but strategically playing a fun, complicated game of rock, paper, scissors. So, I don't know. Maybe if I get desperate later.

It was fun, short, and cute. With a decent amount of categories, this was a really good game for the challenge though I doubt it'll leave much of an impression as the year goes on.

Platforming is still great.
Combat is somehow even worse than Sands of Time. No need to use anything other than basic attack and kick once in a while for shielded enemies. 3 of the abilities are pretty much pointless and the fourth completely breaks the game because it makes you invincible for like 30 seconds and once it runs out you can just pop it again.

Oh yeah the ending is shit too

33. Beat a game with a robot/artificial lead

The Talos Principle

What It Is: A philosophical puzzle game wrapped inside a physics puzzle game.

- I am extremely shocked to see only 28 hours of playtime, considering I feel like I've been playing non-stop all week and even could easily have finished early yesterday afternoon if I did not insist on going back and re-reading all the QR codes I could find and writing them down by author. There is a LOT to do in this game, and even reading a thesis on the nature of philosophy based on this game doesn't feel like I've even scratched the surface of it. Very, very excellent game with good characterization that you don't even really pick up on until the halfway point (if at all), excellent and tricky puzzles, and a story that doesn't answer any questions, but delivers thoughtful and eye-opening questions you didn't ever think to ask.

Also, thanks foolmoron for being one of my messengers! Helped me achieve free will!
