It might sound like a random topic, bashing a game that is generally accepted to be mediocre at best, kinda like making a topic about E.T or Superman 64 or something
BUT, up until now I only hated X6 based on my memory, I never had pictures to back up my claims, and I always couldn't say anything to the "X7 is worse" people because X7 is the only mainline Mega Man game I never played (in any series) due to it being PS2 exclusive

But now I beat X Legacy Collection 2 in part of my Mega Man Marathon and I can safely say, X6 is by far worse than X7 and even worse than I remembered, the level design in this game makes it one of the worst games ever made
And while I know there are trillion of games now, thanks to Mobile Gaming being a thing, at least they (probably) don't have the same level design problems X6 has
To date, with around 700 games played in my gaming career, I don't think I ever played a game where you must suicide because you got to a place you were not supposed to

So now, the pictures-

First there is this part in "Central Museum", probably the second stage you play
The stage layout you get is chosen randomly from a set of layouts, and even that layout can be random with blocks not appearing in some locations. Now if you get this layout..this jump is literally impossible with Unarmored X, you will have to die
OjVYRJ4
HAbMUpP

Next is this insane part in Recycle Lab. The Trash Compactor will only rise for a little bit and you will need to jump from the left wall to the right wall in the small window opened by the rising trash compactor. It's insansely hard and pixel-perfect with Unarmored X. With Falcon it's much easier thanksfully
IB75DSn

And another thing in Recycle Lab. If you go to the hidden route, you will come across a long chasm, you MUST have a hyper dash or another chip that boosts your speed to be able to make the jump to the other side. Don't have them equipped? you can't backtrack, you can't exit the stage, just suicide until you get a game over
av9FrMB

Now look at this thing in Inami Temple stage. As you slide down you see a enemy robot. Now there are some arrows that point to the left of it, but they usually don't mean much. You usually can ignore them and nothing bad happens. slide down to the right of him? you will land on spikes that you couldn't see before jumping down, wow
TGkxnfQ

Start the game with Zero, get to a hidden route in your second stage (Central Museum), encounter High Max. Guess what? you need to suicide again, because Zero without special weapons can't damage him
lvZMEXV

This fucking nightmare effect-
hvileOz

You just landed from a jump a second ago and all was fine. Gotta do it again now, what can go wrong?
6Ovcua0
Spikes. That's what. They expected you to slide on the wall
SrjOt7G

Before you reach this room you need to jump down. Can't slide on the left wall because spikes, so you gotta jump somewhere. Jump into the middle of the room and you die before you notice what's up
0wF9foh

The fight with Gate was bad, it's too much RNG but I can let it slide. What I can't let slide is the Red Orb that is supposed to be the slowdown effect.
Now I don't mind it much, but the slowdown affects inputs as well. I was sliding on the wall when it happened and then I mashed the jump button like mad but it didn't register, fantastic
84JoKm1

And I am not even going to mention how close to impossible Gate 1 Stage is with Unarmored X or the fucking donuts
A game that ask you to suicide in order to progress is the worst level design possible, no matter how bad X7 is to you, X6 is worse

Also I played X7 for the first time and it was actually...passable?
Yes, it has that BURN TO THE GROUND part but it really wasn't as bad as I thought it would be?
I expected a 3D abomination, like all those terrible games that were released in the early 3D days
But it was fine! boss battles were too long because the American version was buffed for some reason, but otherwise they were good
Not being able to Unlock X until halfway was dumb

Also X8 is a game I played a few years ago and I thought it wasn't really good.
Upon replaying it I think it's one of the best X games. Yes, it only has 6 "regular" Maverick stages because the Ice level and the Man-O-War stages are 3D vehicle racings, but the 6 regular stages are pretty damn good
Also a lot of secrets too collect, 3 playable characters that all play differently from each other and has their own skills, and probably the best boss battles in the series

X1>X2>X3>X8>X4>X5>X7>X6

What a great game. I love it!

You also forgot to mention in Gate's stage, there's a jump early on that's too high to do without certain abilities/chips to allow you to jump higher.

I mentioned it at the very bottom of the post, without a picture, because it's on of the most common complaints about this game so nothing unique about mentioning that!

X1-X3 are always good to replay!

Keep in mind that the Steam version of X Legacy Collection is trash and don't buy it
X1-X3 suffer from constant slowdowns that were not in the SNES versions, in some parts it's close to unplayable
On other consoles it might be good I dunno

I think that first picture is doable as unarmored X but its pretty difficult. You can do dash jumps off of walls but the timing is very precise.

Because of how hard it is to do I would definitely still count that as bad design though

Ah yeah. After I read through the post, I went and skimmed the pictures to see if it was there. Apparently I lost all short term memory by the time I hit the bottom. Liking X6 will do that to you.

X6 is actually my favorite post-SNES X game. It's a well done romhack-style game, and a vast improvement over the poorly done romhack-style X5 and the mostly uninteresting X4.

Don't recall having those kinds of problems, guess I was lucky? I actually dig the PS1 trilogy more than the SNES one.

What the hell are those graphic filters, they're like 10 layers of makeup.

Yup, I've been doing a series on our Youtube channel/Twitch trying to get both Platinum Trophies on the X Legacy collections, and I've mentioned pretty much all of these things you did. I hate it, X7 is much more playable than X6 ever is. It's so badly designed. I just finished it on Twitch thankfully, but I didn't get the "Experience all 8 Nightmare Effects" trophy even though I went into ever Red level, or Beat all 8 Mavericks before Gate's level opens up. So I GUESS I GOTTA PLAY IT AGAIN!

Thank GOD there is no "Save every Reploid" trophy or I'd lose my mind.

What you didn't mention was the biggest thing that pissed me off. In Gate 2, you beat High Max and go to the next level, and if you took an armor without an air dash, you also, much like the museum, CANNOT progress forward.

So I figured, no big deal, I'll just switch armors and go back in with Blade armor. NOPE! It sends you back to the start of High Max's level, because I guess Gate 2 is actually TWO full levels lumped into one, and the impossible jump is only near the end of the SECOND PART.

Game is awful. Great music though, and the Shadow Armor is kind of fun when it's not impossible to progress.

I guess that is certainly one extremely jank way of getting across, one which the developers probably did not expect. But at the same time, they didn't expect much other than to pump this game out as quickly as possible. The story isn't terrible though, given all that. Except Zero's "Repaired myself" retcon.

On my next playthrough I'll try that level rotation. Does it assume you beat the investigator or does it matter?

Thinking that X7 is better than X6 is an objectively bad opinion. One game had some bullshit difficulty that really only works the first time you play it, the other singlehandedly ruined the franchise

Yeah, and also it had the balls to try something new. Something most game devs are terrified of doing nowadays (save Nintendo) so I give it points for that. It's bad, yes. But MMX6 is one of the most frustrating, terribly designed, and rushed games I've ever played. So many no win scenarios and just unnecessary nightmare effects completely ruin the experience.

The funny thing is, as I booted up X6 I expected to hate it with a furious frustration, but I got through the first part pretty easily, and even had a good level of fun with it.

Then...the bullshit started coming. And I started having an absolutely awful time. I was 2 hours into a stream/recording and could not stop, cause if I did I would have to do all of the awful Gate stages over again. Was very tilted, and the episode will be going up on our channel soon.

X-X5 was an absolute treat though. There's a reason this is my favorite series ever.
