Hi everyone!

I got Umineko during the last Steam Sale, and it seemed like there was some desire for a playthrough topic.

I've played all the handheld "visual novel" games like Zero Escape, Ace Attorney, and Danganronpa, but I have very little experience with actual visual novels. (Only played Tsukihime when this board was obsessed with it 10 years ago, I think that's it)

I don't know anything about this game, except that it is a murder mystery about people who are trapped on an island, and that there is a character (maybe a witch) named Beatrice. I think I heard that there are no actual gameplay choices, so it is entirely linear.

Please don't talk about any future events! I don't like even the smallest spoilers or implications of any kind (you know the type "oh man can't wait for you to get to X" "Y character becomes really awesome later", etc), so if there are any, I'll just stop posting!

I downloaded the patch that adds improved graphics and voice acting.

It's my first time doing a playthrough topic, so I don't really know what to do! I don't know the structure of the game or what sort of commentary to give, so we'll see. I do like doing character rankings though and (probably?) killer likelihood rankings.

Let me know if you are interested, if no one is then I will be embarrassed and close the thread, which is okay too.

Going on two years! (Well, the current topic is like 9 months old).

There have been a few other Umineko readthrough topics in that time, but some of them died before finishing and some, well, the TC wasn't having a good time, so I ended up not reading along after a while. >_>

I read the prologue. I have to say, the voice acting is very, very overdramatic, at least for this guy who is probably dead and not in the rest of the story.

I think I actually knew that the story is about 18 family members fighting over an inheritance? I'm also glad that knowing Beatrice is evil (?) isn't a spoiler, I was a bit worried it was one of those spoilers that has become commonplace, but it seems she is introduced as a suspicious figure right from the start.

Moving on...

First Impressions: George is a smug, condescending know-it-all asshole. And also possibly a killer. He has the classic tinted glasses and everything.

Also I'm gonna immediately make some enemies here but the combination of american-sounding names with japanese suffixes is kinda making me cringe. Like I'm cool with it when Persona does it 'cause they have japanese names but adding suffixes to "George" sounds weird, and what kind of name even is "Battler"????

this is what happens when you localize things to english and they don't make sense. In japanese this makes perfect sense but I guess the localizers couldn't figure out anything clever to do and/or they wanted to stick to literal translations and they figure anyone playing this weeb shit understands that it's a japanese thing

I'm pretty interested in localization so I'll probably note these things when they happen, especially since I can switch between japanese and english with a key press

tbh at least the character himself talks about how weird his name is so maybe i shouldn't be so quick to judge

i'm waiting for this to somehow be a plot point like his parents gave him a weird name because of something written on the dead guy's will (if this is it, i called it)

george is jouji in japanese? which makes a bit more sense than a japanese person being named george, though i don't know enough about japan to know if this was intended to sound like george or not.

it's a lot easier to take it seriously when this girl calls battler attractive when he doesn't have that original sprite. glad they updated these graphics tbh.

First Impressions: Hideyoshi is too benign and silly to make for a compelling villain, even if he did a 180 personality change. Also, if he's rich already, he has no motive to kill for money. (Unless he is at risk of losing his business?) Eva is too caustic and mean-spirited to make for a surprising villain, so she isn't the killer.

Short-haired woman also looks 18 but is apparently not only my father's wife but openly makes sexual references with her husband's son

Dad is also too much of a jerk to be the villain. Wouldn't be surprising.

George still suspect #1.

this is what i've learned from visual novels. tsukihime does it too.

Crown loli can be #2 on the most-likely-to-be-evil list

Her mom is the most "plain" character so far but I don't know what to make of that

like, come on, this is a serious visual novel about complex matters, there's no way one of the main characters is just a normal 9-year old girl who can apparently barely comprehend basic sentences like "this man is your cousin" without getting massively confused

she's gonna secretly be a genius IQ child who is just faking being dumb

she has changed completely, she has become a child genius and is only pretending to be stupid

and she is not pure or innocent, she is a psycopath

My prediction is that Rosa is not evil, but she is too meek and submissive and has therefore tolerated her daughter's psychopathic actions enough to the point where her daughter controls her and will use her as an accomplice to cover up evil deeds.

Got some weird opening credits which was just character names coupled with shots of plane. Is this because I turned off the option for FMVs because it said they may contain spoilers? Idk.

i didn't actually compare ps3 vs steam, i just installed the patch 'cause idk i thought that's what was recommended

It is the recommended way, it gives the voices too. But the Steam Art is so much better.
