This may surprise you, but bigger stores have more people.

When I walk into the local auto parts store, the guy knows my name and he knows what kind of car I drive.

When I go to the local hardware store, someone always comes up and asks if I need any help, and they are knowledgeable about all kinds of stuff, like what kind of tool works best for pulling thistles (eye hoe) or the best way to fix a cracked sink drain (silicone caulk).

They charge a bit more, but considering it's a half hour drive to the nearest big box store, it's usually a push.

Which makes it impossible to get to know them

Which makes it decidedly less likely that you'll run into the same one often enough to develop an acquaintanceship (spellcheck seems to think that's a word and I'm amazed) with them, especially considering how variable schedules tend to be for those jobs and the relatively high turnover.

I do it sometimes. But not exclusively. Especially if its more of a hassle... And especially if its a good deal more expensive...

If you had a big box store much closer and cheaper, would you go there?

No really. If you go there enough, you can still get to know them...

It depends on how often you go. Ive gone to many bigger stores where I run into the same people more often than not. Like at the Wal-Mart I go to. When I use to go there all the time, I use to run into the same person in the electronics sections. And had the same cashier like every time...

Yeah, it does happen if you go often enough. I recognize a few of the cashiers at my usual grocery store, since that's at least a weekly visit. Something like a hardware store, though, isn't as likely to be a frequent thing.

Busy people dont often stop to try and talk.
More crowded places communicate the minimum to get their day along

Unless they are trying to flirt in which case theyll stop for forever but its really funny when guys try to flirt with me through my sister

Dopends on what you do. My BF use to have to go a lot at one point. So he got to know them pretty well... And I recognize the people at the grocery store, too. I see them a lot. One of them even gives Plasma. We were on the same day for a while...

For basic things (screwdrivers, lumber, toilets), probably, if I know what I'm after. The local hardware store stocks a better selection of unusual tools (like scythes and eye hoes, things I've never seen at Home Depot). And if I needed help on a project, I'd definitely go to the small guys first. Last time I tried asking for help about a fusebox at Home Depot it took 20 minutes to find someone who could answer my question.

People actually go to stores to meet other people? What? Why? I go to the store to buy what I want, then I leave. Heck, one of the reasons I use self-checkout is so I can avoid the cashiers.

We dont go there to specifically meet people. But meeting people can prove beneficial...

Probably. If you know someone well, enough. Though, K use it for other things. Sometimes, people will hold something for you even though you didn't know it was out. Or will tell you about other stuff they think you may be interested in. And knowing people may get people to tell you if something you were going to buy is cheaper somewhere else...
