All the senators and legislators still get paid, but the president and legislators on Capitol Hill still get their paychecks. They still get to relax and feed their families, pay their bills, and live comfortably while everyone else is scrambling to pay their bills and feed their family without a paycheck.

Next time we have a government shutdown, congressional salaries should be furloughed as well. Let these multimillionaires and billionaires sit high and tidy too. Not that itll do much as they have much more of a cushion to sit on, but at least its equal treatment. Theyre not above the law or better than everyone else.

What about members of Congress, political appointees and the president?

Heres what a Congressional Research Service report has to say: With regard to the Presidents pay, Article II, Section 1 of the Constitution forbids the salary of the President to be reduced while he or she is in office, thus effectively guaranteeing the President of compensation regardless of any shutdown action.

Congress would not be interrupted, since it is funded under one of the spending bills that already have passed.

Guidance from the Office of Personnel Management says the large majority of political appointees are not subject to furloughs because they are considered to be entitled to the pay of their offices solely by virtue of their status as an officer, rather than by virtue of the hours they work. In other words, their compensation is attached to their office, and, by necessary implication of the Presidents authority to appoint such employees, their service under such an appointment creates budgetary obligations without the need for additional statutory authorization. The exception is that the relatively few political appointees in the Senior Executive Service, under 1,000, are subject to being furloughed because they fall under the regular federal employee leave policies.

By should their payment come from a separate bill? If theyre not being paid the same way as everyone else, then theyre not playing on the same field, so to speak, and are thus above the law.

Sure it would, but it's different for civilian cases. Government workers get back pay when the shutdown ends. The longest shutdown was 21 days, but they average around 8. They'll be back before long without missing a beat.

Because it sucks to have to cancel something youve made plans for and were looking forward to. Like I said, I dont get a lot of time off Im hourly and can barely get anything done during the weekend. This year, I wanted to sightsee in Yosemite and hike as theres less tourists and bears are hibernating. Cant do that now. The shutdown may be averted and my trip might be saved. I dont know. Its all hinges on if congress can get their shit together.

I dont like having overdue bills and possibly getting I trouble because I dont have money. Or if I was waiting to get paid to get food. Just because they get back pay doesnt mean they wont be struggling until then. Sometimes, you need you money when you normally get paid. Some people even plan their bliss around their paycheck. It can really hurt a lot of people depending on how much they have and get paid. And how long it takes to pay them what theyre owed...

I don't even necessarily disagree with your initial premise, but "You can go look it up for yourself" is rarely a valid defense of any position. If you care enough to make an assertion to people who never asked for your opinion in the first place, you're generally expected to support and defend said assertion. Because you're essentially asking other people to care, and you don't really accomplish that by telling other people to do unnecessary homework.

I don't mind Congress and the President still getting paid. the most corrupt and rich won't care either way, but it could impact the few elected officials who aren't wealthy, and lead them into making bad decisions in their haste to escape oncoming debt.

What SHOULD happen though, is that if there is an impasse, then the existing spending levels are maintained while it's sorted out and the employees still go to work and get paid.
If the president and/or some in congress are unhappy with the current spending levels and want to make a stand about it, put the onus on THEM to resolve it in a timely manner. Because otherwise each day that ticks by, the spending is done the same way.

But of course, then they couldn't have nearly as much theatrics about the stand off, nor get jollies out of economically crushing middle class federal workers.
