SuperNiceDog 12/28/18 12:33:29 AM #1:	For me, I think it's been League of Legends. I know it wasn't officially released in the official window(late 2009), but its influence has been undeniable. It really pushed esports to the forefront, so much so that esports arenas and leagues are more prevalent now. It was the game that pushed streaming to the forefront. More so than any other game, people streamed league of legends to build a following during the middle of the decade(2011-2016 in particular) For better or worse, it introduced the idea of "toxic behavior" and "reported", two issues that went beyond video games as social issues during the decade. The idea of online bullying and censorship...those ideas were given a prime example through the medium of League. In terms of numbers, I pulled up an article from 2016 that said League has more than 100 million active players. Yes this number has fallen likely now heading in 2019, but still that is an incredible amount. Finally, just on a personal level, I remember how blown away I was personally playing the game when I first started in 2011. It was my first MOBA, really one of the only major gaming innovations during the decade. The idea of battling as 5 versus another 5 was still a very novel idea when the game came out. It was like a war! Such a cool concept. When I first started playing the game, back in Sept 2011, I was addicted, playing 10 hours a day with my brother. The game is addictive, clearly. It inspired more games that followed(overwatch, heroes of the storm, fortnite even in the battle arena concept) than any other game in the decade. Any one else agree or disagree? It really pushed game narrative for me, it still astounds and affects me deeply on every playthrough, right up there with Silent Hills 2 & 3. Especially if we are considering "game of the decade" to mean the game having had the largest impact on the whole decade and not just the best game released in this decade. I mean, it wasn't the first ever game with a patch, but it certainly was the most influential one.(you could argue for Wow) Also, just the pure numbers. From 2018 data: "The most recent figures show that League of Legends has an active player base of over 80 million monthly players. Or over 27 million players every single day." Compare this to other candidates for GotD: Zelda: Breath of the Wild: 7.0 million in Japan and 5.01 million units overseas, 12 million total Persona 5: 2.2 Million Spec Ops: The Line: under 1 million copies GTA 5: Over 95 Million Copies. Amongst these, only GTA 5 has a competition with League, with more total sales. Yet how many people still play GTA 5 in late 2018? Probably not many. Amongst other online games: Overwatch: As of May 2018, Overwatch had 40 million players worldwide. Graces and both xillia games are ok-good but nothing special. Zesteria is straight up garbage. Like it would be in my top 10 most disappointing. Id say xenoblade chronicles 1 is a close shout for my top 10. It might even make it in if I give it more thought. Thing is I love vesperia and Im a big Jrpg fan but Im not one of these people that only plays jrpgs. Its not even my fav genre. I think The Last of Us showed me just how far a game can go to tell a story and discuss themes rather than just have a plot. Also the multiplayer in it is probably one of the top 3 multiplayers I've ever played. The new God of War does something very similar with its story in that it tackled some pretty meaningful stuff, but it did that slightly less effectively than The Last of Us.
