In fact, The last of us did a much better job with what bird box was going for. You basically have a 5 year time skip with virtually no character development until the last 20 minutes of the movie. I can't suspend my disblief that it would take anyone 5 years of trying to protect those kids to open herself up to loving them. The timeline just doesn't make a lick of sense. --- I love people.
