Id say when a topic exists dedicated to GOTY on GB wih 300+ Replies people care.

Tbh I care more about GB as a gaming site in terms of their GOTY discussions than any other site because no one else does it like them.

gamespot do a shitty presentation thing and announce their games in a crude way which sucks

Say what you want about GB its half a dozen or so gamers sitting down and taking in depth about their favourite games and debating /arguing on what is the best and part of that is interesting in Its own right.
