If a person is secretly horrible, but outwardly in public a beacon of the community, is it better to preserve the idea of the person or destroy the legacy in favor of the truth? - Results (4 votes)
The positive idea is important, hide the truth if it means this person was a good example.

Depends.

Does outing the secret and destroying their reputation actually accomplish anything of value, or are you doing it solely out of a petty need for revenge against someone who may not even be still alive to care (if you're doing it years later)?

Does preserving the illusion of their worth somehow inspire others to be better people or accomplish worthwhile things, or is it a mostly a neutral-value reputation that doesn't mean much beyond serving as that person's legacy?

No, crush the hope of the community. It makes them easier to control and manipulate.

Uh, that's kinda in the air since it's for something I'm working on but let's say destroying the persons history wouldn't prove to benefit anyone very much besides closure, if you buy into that (I do not) and said person is already passed. For the sake of the hypothetical we'll say the person wasn't neutral but lawful good. At least as far as anyone else was aware.

Both options hold the person to an impossible standard. Don't have idols at all. Take a person for all they are. Hold them up for the good they've done. Acknowledge the bad. Accept that no one is perfect.

The world would be a miserable place if we were less forgiving as a whole. Do you really want to be judged and remembered for every little thing you've ever done wrong?

There's exceptions of course, depending on the severity of the issues, but villainizing everyone is just going to make this planet a sad place to live on.

This reminds me of a video game i played where the towns local arena hero turned out to be the guy kidnapping everyone and feeding them to a spider so he could drink spider juice and become stronger and give money to orphans.

After he was found out by the community they were like "Its okay we still love you and believe in you despite you killing half the town and drinking their fluids in order to cheat in the arena!"
