It wasn't easy narrowing poll options down to nine of the cutest anime, but I managed somehow.

10 episodes into Zombieland Saga

this is an idol-ass idol show

Feels even more idol focused than Macross does.

Muhyo & Roji is an old Shonen Jump title so I want to read it someday.

But it never looked good so that'll probably be a far off day.

The beginning is so cute and old school. Nothing like the impression I get from later promotional materials or the card game.

I finished RErideD, and it honestly wasn't as bad as its low MAL score made me fear it would be. It wasn't good either, mind you, but it wasn't bad. Yuri was the only character that I really cared about (and even her only barely, she just felt the most like a real person), but all the rest of the main cast were at least inoffensive. The bad future setting didn't make a whole lot of sense, somehow being both a functioning society and an apocalyptic wasteland depending on the needs of the scene. There were a few neat set-pieces where they fought robots, though, so that was nice I guess. As for the plot itself... it had a few good ideas that I thought might come together in the end, but sadly the boatloads of nonsense that surrounded those good ideas kept them from living up to their potential. To me, a good time travel story makes you go 'whoa cool' at the end when all the pieces come together and RErideD... didn't do that. Ah well.

I think what salvaged my opinion of this more than anything is that I love time travel stories in general, even if they suck. This may have been a poorly written mess, but those rare moments where I (incorrectly) thought I saw something intelligent were still worth watching for, at least for me. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else, though.

Finished reading the Kamisama Kiss/Kamisama Hajimemashita manga. For the most part, I quite enjoyed it. For the stuff the anime covered, it's basically the same. I'm not sure I'd say I like either version better. Most of the content the anime doesn't cover is good stuff too, up until the last few volumes. Unfortunately, those are all one long arc (I prefer the shorter arcs in this series) and they focus on the 'main villain' of the series, who I do not enjoy very much at all. I would've much preferred for him to have far less screentime. I also would've liked more stuff with Nanami just going around being a god. Those were my favorite parts, and we didn't get to see much of it, unfortunately. The ending itself went in a direction I didn't like, but it was extremely well executed, so I didn't really have a problem with that. Also they basically undid the lame choices with the last couple pages, so that was cool at least?

Zombieland Saga completed. Man, what was up with that argument in the last topic with people trying to say this wasn't an idol show? There were plenty of arcs straight out of idol shows, and there was as much focus on the singing as a lot of those shows have. I guess some people are just desperate to trick people into watching something they like? I feel like it's better to be honest rather than lying to people when it comes to that sort of thing. Anyway, let's go into a few of the show's elements:

Music: it was bad. The first couple episodes did some fun stuff my having metal and rap songs, so it felt like it might be doing something different, but all the rest of the songs were generic idol stuff. Bad generic idol stuff, at that. Even Love Live had better music than this. And none of them play instruments, wtf.

Animation: the highlight of the show! Almost everything looked pretty good. There were a lot of neat visual gags, and a high amount of movement in general. The CGI performances were terrible though (please don't tell me they were supposed to be parodying other idol shows. There were zero parody elements to the CGI in the last few episodes), and I wish they'd stayed without human makeup more often.

Story/Characters: this is where the series really fails. Most of the cast is fairly uninteresting. Sakura's a generic idol show protagonist (though she was fun in ep 11 at least), Junko and Ai are generic filler idol group members, Tae was actually solid, Saki was fun most of the time, Yugiri could've been good if she actually got any focus, Lily was good in her episode but boring the rest of the show, and Tatsumi was a repulsive piece of garbage who ruined every scene he was in. The zombie elements were pretty heavily underused in general, as were the diverse origins of the cast members. There could've been all sorts of fun stuff with them coming from different eras, but that was mostly just used for the occasional gag. Even the zombie elements were way underused. How come none of them go back to their families? Why do all of them accept becoming idols, especially after they get makeup that lets them pass as human? Why don't more people notice that they've come back from the dead, especially famous people like Ai? At the very least, Lily had no reason not to go back to living with her family, as far we were shown. Everything was oddly predictable too. You'd think a show with such a crazy premise would actually have plot twists, but no, everything basically goes right as you'd expect in a normal idol show. Junko's episode was one of the worst for this. Would've been a lot more interesting if she'd actually left the group.

Comedy: The show could be funny sometimes, but a lot of the jokes fell flat, and having too many serious parts kinda spoiled some of them. The show probably would've been better if it had tried to be more of a pure comedy.

Overall, bad show. Didn't even have the courtesy to wrap things up in one season. Gave it a 3/10 on MAL.

I definitely liked the first 2 episodes of Zombieland Saga a lot more than anything that came after it, for similar reasons to what you say.

Also I don't think anyone was actually trying to claim it straight up wasn't an idol anime. I think there might have been people saying things like "it's a unique idol anime" or "it's not just an idol anime", but yeah. (I'm not really sure though and I'm not exactly itching to reread that discussion to confirm either way)

I've also seen the claim that ZLS is a satire of an idol anime and not an idol anime played straight, which I think is just straight up wrong. I don't think any of that was on this board though.

At least not after episode 5 or so, because earlier on in the show the "satire" take was actually a legitimate one.

I mean there's still an overlying tone of satire with the zombie thing in general. Idols having to put on a mask to hide their actual lives. And of course the imagery on the OP itself of the zombies (fans) chasing around an idol in a mob to get a piece for themselves.
