Nintendo Switch has become the fastest-selling video game system of this hardware generation through 21 months, according to The NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States. From its launch in March 2017 through November 2018, Nintendo Switch has sold more than 8.7 million units, outpacing U.S. sales of all other current-generation systems at the same point in their life cycles.

Nintendo is also the overall top-selling U.S. software publisher so far for 2018, according to NPD data through November. This performance should receive an additional boost from the December release of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate game, which has become not only the fastest-selling Nintendo Switch game of all time, but also the fastest-selling game in the Super Smash Bros. series, with U.S. sales of over 3 million units in just 11 days, according to Nintendos internal sales data.

We are thrilled to see such a strong reaction from consumers in the second holiday season for Nintendo Switch, said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of Americas Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Were looking forward to delivering more excitement and smiles to our fans in the coming year and beyond.

The following data from Nintendo of America is specific to the U.S. only:
Nintendo hardware unit and dollar sales for 2018 are at their highest annual totals since 2011.
Nintendo eShop sales have grown 105 percent over 2017.
Evergreen Nintendo Switch games have set new milestones, with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe selling over 4 million and 5 million units, respectively. Super Mario Odyssey has sold over 4.7 million units.
In addition to the fast-selling Super Smash Bros. Ultimate game, other recently released games that continue to make a splash include Pokmon: Lets Go, Pikachu! and Pokmon: Lets Go, Eevee!, which together total 2 million units, and Super Mario Party at 1.4 million.

Smash Bros Ultimate has also had the biggest debut sales of any exclusive since Halo 3.

My family has 3 nintendo switches in total

Isn't the switch still a 720p console?

Its not in direct competition with ps4 and xbox one whom are both pushing 4k gaming.

So if switch sells more units, it still cant really be compared to the other 2. Its in its own market. With no other real competition.

Everybody either owns a ps4 or an xbox1 but then each will also own a switch.

It can do 1080p when docked. I'm pretty sure the 1080p models for the PS4 and Xbox One are way more common than the 4k ones.

It is a portable system though so it is a different product in that way and I'm sure plenty of Switch owners own another system.

We don't have exact numbers from Sony, but the Vita is estimated to have sold at least a million more units than the Wii U.

the price is about the same, though, so for a lot of people, they're choosing the Switch over a PS4 or Xbox One rather than seeing it as a complement to them

The games are also different. People see the game of the year recommendations, most of the games are on the PS4 and not the Switch, ergo they get the PS4.

Switch is still gen 8. It replaced the wii u, took damn near all of it's games and competes with the ps4 and xbox one. Even if you combine the switch and wii u sales it's just slightly behind the x1.

I wouldn't say the switch is competing. It's more like...coexisting. Sales will probably stagnate soon now that Smash is out and the next big game is months away

The console movers don't even have release dates, just 2019.
