B8's anime awards are back!

Thanks to @tazzyboyishere for running the show last year, he did a great job and put a few of his own touches on the project.

Though this year I'm back as host and looking forward to finding out what B8Anime picks as this year's finest.

Throughout this topic, users can promote what they think deserves to do well in the award categories, though please do refrain from posting your ballot until the big reveal.

General Rules:

- PM your ballot either on GameFaqs or via Discord
- You can change your ballot up to Saturday 29th December 19:00 EST
- For ballots that aren't fully filled, the lowest points will not be assigned
- In the event of a tie, the anime that was on the most number of ballots wins, if this is equal, then the show with the highest number of maximum points wins.
- To be eligible, an anime must have either started airing in 2018, or had the majority of its season's episodes broadcast in 2018.
- Films are not eligible

https://myanimelist.net/anime/season/2018/summer
https://myanimelist.net/anime/season/2018/fall

We'll have two set of categories.

Category A Awards, these are the categories that regularly get the most votes and as such, I've decided to expand the voting from 3 candidates to 5. They are the main event of these awards so to speak.

Anime of the Year
Best Character Male
Best Character Female
Best Drama
Best Comedy
Best Opening-Ending

Category B Awards is for the secondary tier of awards. These in previous years have gotten less votes, but still did well enough to avoid getting cut. You'll be able to nom 3 candidates max for these awards.

Most Anticipated Show
Fight of the Year
Best Couple
Best Story
Studio of the Year
Best Cast
Best Visuals
Best Moment

Here is a general guideline of what each award is. A lot of them are self explanatory, but still.

Anime of the Year
Your favourite anime series this year. The show must have had the majority of its episodes aired in 2018

Best Character Male/Female
For the top male/female character of the year.

Best Drama/Comedy
This is for the best shows of their respective genres.

Best Opening-Ending
For the purpose of this award, you are taking into consideration the opening/ending used as part of episodes that aired.

Most Anticipated Show
Which upcoming show has you most hyped?

Fight of the Year
As ever, this is for the best showdown between two parties. It can be a traditional 1 vs 1, team battle or sports match.

Best Couple
This is for the 2 characters who had the most onscreen chemistry together.

Best Story
The show this year had the most engaging plot.

Studio of the Year
The studio that you felt performed best this year in the output of their content.

Best Cast
The series that had the best overall ensemble this year

Best Visuals
This is for the show you just liked looking at the most.

Best Moment
New award I'm testing out in the B Cats. This is for the most impactful anime moment of the year.

Best Supporting Character
This is a new award to push some of the side characters a little bit more, excludes all of the main characters of the story

Tag. I like that we get 5 votes for the bigger categories.

I feel like the deadline should be a bit later though. I know at least 1 show I'm watching finishes on the 28th, and I'd rather have more than just 1 day to both watch the final episode and decide how it changes my views of the show as whole.

Tag. How will spoilers for best moment be handled, could I just put a show name, episode number, and tag the spoilers?

Also, without giving my picks away, would anyone be interested in me posting a shortlist of shows I'm considering with thoughts regarding which categories they might deserve a chance in? I'm on my way to having seen 100 2018 anime so, while my unorthodox tastes might make some consider me among the worst anime topic users, I've seen a lot of the more obscure stuff!

In the past it's been new characters only. New to anime, of course. Old manga characters just showing up count.

For moment I'll mention the series, but keep the spoiler tagged.

For the voting, no need to beat around the bush, since it's all sent to me directly.

I'm gonna relax the rule on characters a bit, it doesn't have to be new characters only, but they can only be judged by what they did in this year's shows and not past accomplishments.

Ex: Bakugo wasn't anything special in MHA S1, but in S2 his character was a lot better.

In the past the flat rule was an anime had to begin airing in same year to be eligible.

If it's a 6/6 or 12/12 split, then I'll allow the show to be nommed as half a series isn't enough to be judged on.

For most anticipated, you can check out the MAL list

https://myanimelist.net/anime/season

Winter/Spring 2019 and Later are eligible for this one.

Alright, here are fifteen 2018 anime that I at least want to remind people of. Some are obscure, others were seen by practically everyone. Some have wide appeal, others might only appeal to me. Regardless, while I don't know how in demand my opinions are, this is mostly just a way for me to kill time at work so I'm going to get started! These are ordered alphabetically.

A.I.C.O.: Incarnation is a sci-fi story about a girl who needs to venture into a containment zone to reach the heart of a hostile, biological burst. There were a lot of things about this that appealed to me. The plot was focused on a singular goal, there were a lot of interesting battles along the way, and the burst provided some neat visuals. The main girl, Aiko, was also someone who I felt had a lot of depth.

A Place Further than the Universe was about a group of girls who strive to become part of an expedition to Antarctica. This show was a decent mix of fun slice-of-life and emotional character moments. The main cast was always a joy to see together and the impact of watching their journey still sticks with me even several months later.

Asobi Asobase is a comedy about three girls who form a club where they try to find fun ways to pass the time. Each episode was divided into skits, and not all of them were winners. However, if you want over-the-top comedy, this is one of the best options of the year!

Dragon Pilot: Hisone & Masotan is about a girl who is chosen to pilot a dragon in the Japanese air force (yes I know that plot is obvious from the title, shut up, these quick descriptions aren't always easy). There's quite a bit of absurdity to this, starting with the girls needing to be eaten to pilot the dragons. That's part of what makes it a fun anime, however, along with the oddball characters and unique art style.

Happy Sugar Life is about a teenager living with a little girl under questionable circumstances, and how she'll do anything to maintain their happy life together. This is one where I imagine the dark tone and concept might turn people away, but those are also the show's strengths if you're in the mood for them. Seeing into the main character's mind and glimpsing how she reacted to things and justified herself was always fascinating for me.

Hinamatsuri is about a psychic girl who drops into the apartment of a Yakuza enforcer. This is primarily a comedy anime, exploring all the ways that premise can be hilarious. However, for something with such a wacky foundation, there were also a surprising amount of moments that managed to get to me because of how real they were. Basically, Hinamatsuri always nailed whatever tone it wanted to convey.

Iroduku: The World in Colors is about a girl who is magically sent into the past. This anime is a slow build, primarily exploring the relationships Hitomi forms in the past. The magical aspect of the setting provides a lot of beautiful moments, however, and in my opinion the relationships between the characters eventually build into something equally as magical provided you have patience and aren't turned off by the more high school drama aspects of it.

Katana Maidens is about two girls who learn a terrifying secret about their organization, which protects the world from supernatural monsters. This is by far the most personal-taste pick on my list, but I just couldn't let 2018 pass without shilling Katana Maidens one final time. There's a lot here to nitpick if you want to, with budget constraints often limiting fight scenes and the second half failing to deliver on the promise of the first. I still feel like Katana Maidens has a solid core, though. The characters are intelligent in pursuit of their goals, which often results in neat moments. There are also times where the budget and all the different elements click together, and those rare instants were so magical.

Killing Bites is about people infused with animal powers who battle one another. If you can look past the blatant fanservice elements, there are a lot of creative fights in this anime that made it a whole lot of fun to watch. The plot is mostly an excuse for the battles, but it's at least decent too

Laid-Back Camp is about girls who discover the simple joy of camping. This anime was by far the most relaxing experience of the year, but it also had an impressive amount of depth in both the camping adventures and the characterization. Laid-Back Camp had a ton of funny moments, too.

Last Period is about characters who live in a gacha game. Let me be up front, the comedy in this show is super lame. However, that's also what makes it kind of great if self-aware lameness is what you're into. My favorite part was Wiseman, a group of antagonists who burst into scenes with a dumb Team Rocket-style introduction. They also produced an ED song that was far catchier than it had any right to be.

Planet With is a mecha show about a boy who fights both to undermine a non-standard alien invasion and against the super-powered defenders of Earth. For me, Planet With was the perfect mixture of seriousness and absurdity. It featured silly animal mascot things, but also had a lot of moments that kind of got to me. The pacing of the story was great too, covering a lot without ever seeming rushed.

Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl-senpai is about a guy who strives to help various girls who are inflicted with quasi-supernatural problems. I'm really not sure how else to quickly describe it, but that blurb doesn't do the show justice. The main characters all have fantastic development and chemistry. Aside from a few pacing issues, I've always been satisfied with how the individual arcs were handled.

Revue Starlight is about a group of theater students who participate in a rather unusual series of auditions. This is a hard anime to describe without giving anything away. I guess I'll just say that all the characters were unique, the animation was beautiful, and the story was filled with tons of great symbolism. This show really deserves at least a chance, because the first episode is an excellent indicator of the awesomeness that follows.

Zombie Land Saga is about a group of girls who are turned into zombies in order to form an idol group. This show has a lot of fun characters, and their zombie/idol misadventures lead to a lot of hilarious moments. What really pulls it all together for me, though, is that it also has a lot heart. It may be an absurd look at the idol genre, but I feel that ZLS also works as a legit idol anime too.

It was one of the fifteen anime I recommended in those two posts no one read!

As for Violet Evergarden, there were three or so episodes that I liked (they were 100% emotionally manipulative heartstring pulling, but I'm a sucker for that so if you are too it might be worth checking out). Those high points were higher than anything in Dragon Pilot, which was more consistently 'good'. The rest of VE was terrible low points, though. The character of Violet is boring and makes no sense within the context of the setting, which really ruins everything to do with her story if you spend more than a minute thinking about it. I know some people who managed to look past them, to be fair, but I couldn't.

I almost always like it too but I feel like it's fair to criticize when it goes overboard into the point of absurdity. One character having a fatal disease can make me cry if it's done right. One character having a fatal disease in a world where every other character also has the worst luck in the world and it can feel silly instead of sad.
