Sorry, I worked for nonprofits for coolie wages most of my life, I gave at the office. And now that I'm retired, I still do a lot of pro bono work. And drive a 26 year old car.

Unless you're doing the same, you've got no room to talk.

While gift shaming isn't really cool. I do see that at least your heart is in the right place.

Try a less blaming approach in the future.

When there's help for everyone I will help. Until then, I help nobody but myself.

I'm saying I've been in need and not known where to go or been denied. So fuck that.

Actually, two people gave me money when Saudi Arabia flooded the market with oil intentionally to crash Canada's market once the price of shale (our market) was going up. Those people are longtime-friends and will forever have my gratitude. They didn't send a lot, but it is the thought that counts. A third friend said she wished she could but she also fell on hard times.

I live in the midwest United States, and those OPECkerheads all but destroyed the shale oil industry here, too. A cartel that engages in human slavery is more honorable than random people who commit the sin of simply not starving to death, and trying to support their families with a bit of excess in case of disaster?

You're not going to guilt trip me. When I see a 'homeless' person with scratchy lotto or a cell phone I'm inclined to not believe them. I too would prefer to give to an animal shelter first. People suck.

With that said we tend to trade practical gifts instead of random weird crap you find at the mall. Stick to the list and everyone is happy.

You should probably sell your computer and stop paying your electric bill so you can send the money you save to help people in Africa eat and get medicine.

Every post you make on this board is morally equivalent to murdering a sad African child!

The scratch-it ticket does make them questionable but I have heard of programs in-place that provide such folks with cell phones as a means of being contacted for employment. Kinda hard to find employment if one applies but can't be reached.

With a cellphone, I can believe that. People don't start homeless. A cellphone is also pretty much required when applying for jobs, since they would have few other methods of contact.

I know multiple users here have spent time homeless, one of them talked about using their phone to apply for jobs through free WiFi and charging it in the library.

I used to be homeless as well, during a more troubled part of my past, I had to take care of my little sister after my aunt kicked us out.

Main concern was making sure she had something to eat and could stay warm, though back then, we didn't have mobiles to stay in touch with others and I didn't have anywhere safe to leave her, so she just had to stay with me most of the time while I was trying to get us back on our feet.

You've been here long enough, you should know PotD takes all bait. All the time. Always and forever.

It's why all of our trolls are so extremely shitty - it doesn't actually take any effort. You'll never learn how to fish properly if all of the fish just start leaping directly into your boat as soon as you row out.

Is that all you did?

Yay, you helped feed people... One day.

I'm sure the time of year has done nothing to morally blackmail you into at least pretending to care about your fellow man.

Throw in a major war going on and you've pretty much got the Grave of the Fireflies plot.
