I'm not saying he's a bad character, but he gets a -disproportionate- amount of recognition and love over other RPG protagonists, but to me he isn't necessarily more special or badass than others.

Two reasons he gets so much recognition/love:
1. He's the main protagonist of Final Fantasy VII. He gets more recognition because FF7 is the most recognised and overall popular RPG of all time (ignoring Pokemon). 2. Because just like Ocarina of Time was everybodys favorite N64 game, Final Fantasy 7 was everybodys favorite PSX game. How do people not get that yet?
