Board 8 > The SBAllen appreciation topic!

I'm not good at introductions and such, so let's just mention some good things SBAllen has done this contest.

Thanks be to SB...

1) For remembering board 8 and giving us a 1-on-1 character tournament that we were craving for years. And the matches were 24 hours, even!

2) For creating the separate "Legends" bracket. It wasn't perfect, but it was a great way to keep historically strong characters from dominating the main bracket. As a result, we had one of the most challenging and interesting brackets we have ever had. The loser's bracket was a great way to give us some additional competition for characters that couldn't stand a chance in the winner's bracket. Quite honestly, the Legends bracket was better than most of the other ideas people were throwing around.

3) For dealing all the users complaints that come with every contest.

4) For the "Second Chance" contest, which was a fun way to re-kindle interest for those whose regular bracket was toast.

5) For the idea of registered users' votes counting twice, which did help limit the effectivness of rallies.

I'd appreciate it if some of you could also express your appreciation as well as mention any other good things SB has done.

I was only around for 2-3 of CJayCs contests but honestly SBAllen's contests overall have been better.

I wasn't super into 4 ways or 3 ways but I'm glad he's at least willing to mix things up

I think outside 4 ways/3 ways formats and the Years/Rivals idea his contests have slowly been better in terms of structure and presentation which is cool despite the sadly declining vote totals.

I would prefer if we didn't enforce having to vote in every match but I think this current contest format otherwise is great

I think this idea was just fine for Character Battles where it's at least more likely that someone will recognize one of the characters from each match and pick them.

For a Games Contest, this would be a bad idea. It's a lot harder to sell people on the idea of voting for a game they've never played if you had a match where someone has not played either game. This would be a lot more likely in the future Game of the Decade contest in 2020.

Are you seriously using that as an excuse to deflect praise for SBAllen? Besides, I've been around since 2001 and been a regular (though not terribly active) on Board 8 since 2003.

Im always happy to get a contest, even if this was the least interesting one we've had since I've been here. Also seems like the least invested sballen has ever been.

I really didnt like not being able to see the results on the front page, and hated how I couldn't see the match pics after I voted.

Either way thank sballen, you kept our board alive for at least another year

Yeah, it's true. SBAllen wasn't as invested in this contest. There were issues pertaining to match pics, too. BUT....

Loser's bracket weirdness aside (and even that turned out better than expected), I felt like this was the least predictable contest that I've taken part in. Definite props to SBAllen for the bracket.

Good contest, not perfectly-run but he did a good job and his anti-rally measures worked

Yeah, for all the problems I had with the uninspired match pictures and communication issues, the bracket itself was really well done, and in spite of the loser's bracket causing too many rematches that wouldn't flip, the ones that did have variation worked out really well.

This has been a legit great contest. Love the 1v1s, love the top 16 with legends entering later, love the double-elimination. Spectacular contest overall.

best contest season we've had in as long as I can remember, rally nerf kept the board much more bearable without the usual invasion trolls

tho i must say registered voters have garbage taste but hey at least i know that for sure now

The 6 day break for people to fill out a Second Chance bracket was a bad idea because it killed our vote totals after the contest returned again. We never once got above 30000 votes after the Thanksgiving break.

If we are going to have a Second Chance contest with a 6 day break for future contests, we really should have some bonus polls during the break to keep the site interested in the contest when the contest officially resumes again. One possible idea for bonus polls during this contest's Thanksgiving break would have involved the losers of the division finals being placed into a series of bonus polls. We would have gotten these matches:

Vivi vs. Zero
Pokemon Trainer Red vs. Kirby
Aerith Gainsborough vs. Geralt
Luigi vs. Ryu

The winners of each match would move onto the next round (it would be a mini bracket of 8 characters) and we could have done one match per day during the 6 day Thanksgiving break.
