The amount of references and attention to detail across several different games is pretty insane. They either must have played a shitload of games outside of being developers or they do a lot of research implementing different franchises into the game. Some references in these spirit fights and classic modes cut deep.

There's nothing else really like it.

I've always felt Japanese game developers are extremely good when it comes to this sort of stuff. Music, animation, character models, references are always some of the best.

I wish it was done better, but I get it. Geno as Sheik and Mallow as Kirby fought on the Battlefield form of the Super Mario Galaxy stage with the Rainbow Road music from MK7.

Twintelle from ARMS being portrayed by Bayonetta who only uses Wicked Weaves is so damn clever lol.

I wish we could see behind the scenes stuff from this game. There must be so many interesting ideas and conversations.

Oh my god I hadn't even started the battle when I made my post. You start off with Mario, Bowser and Kirby and the others don't join in until you KO one of the others and Sheik starts with a Super Scope. I love this game so much!

To be fair Western developers probably will never get a similar opportunity as the Smash developers. The closest stuff is probably the superhero games. The Arkham games, Injustice and Spider-man all have a lot of fan service and passion in them too. But unfortunately most of the time when they work with other licenses they're stuck on a tight deadline or lower budget.

Western licensing in general seems a lot more cynical compared to what we see used in Smash. Square-Enix seeming to be the exception.

There are some mashups here and there in the indie western world, Super Meat Boy had all sorts of playable characters from lesser-known games

But yeah I agree with you, seems like most western AAA devs have a stick up their asses about keeping their games serious and straightforward. Which I don't like at all

I just got to the one where (Fire Emblem Awakening spoilers) you fight Robin then after he's defeated you fight giant Ridley. Thought that was cool.

Why are you guys generalizing? I played a lot of Japanese games that felt incredibly soulless as well, this is a game developed by Nintendo, which is known to be really good when it comes to quality control because that is what they're known for.

This a great example of the difference in quality between a Japanese team who did/used to have integrity vs a western team who only cares about flashiness and surface appearances. (Granted I did like DR2 the best which was also done by the same western devs but they've clearly gotten worse).

Yeah.

The use of engines made western developers really lazy

There was a Xenoblade 2 spirit "Morag" (Lucina I think) and her partner was Palutena (obviously as a reference to her Blade, Brighid).

I killed Lucina first and got a victory because in Xenoblade 2, if the driver dies, the blade returns to its core.

Nice little nod to the driver/blade lore.

Probably has something to do with copyright. Then again, Nintendo is known for being really strict with that too.
