No. That's just the worst thing you can do to cause mass panic. It should always be announced first as a drill

Parents of high school aged teens in Florida are outraged after they received an "unannounced" red code drill conducted last week that sent students and teachers into a SCREAMING PANIC!!

District Spokeseman Michael Lawrence said it happened Thursday morning at Lake Brantley High School as panic ensued when a Lake Brantley student shared the screenshot of the alert that teachers also received during the drill that warned of an active shooter on school grounds!

It said "Active shooter at Brantley/Building 1/Building 2 and other buildings by B Shafer at 10:21:45. Initiate a Code Red Lockdown"

The only problem was that it didn't indicate that the active shooter incident was not real and the district said it sometimes conduct unannounced drills and immediately alert parents

He said the message may have gone "bit later" than normal

A mother posted that her daughter was terrified the entire time and said "Nothing is more terrifying than getting a text from your daughter who is hiding in her classroom and having a complete anxiety attack".

Principal Trent Daniel sent out an email that stating that a student was responsible for the "campus disruption caused by a social media post" and added that it is being investigated as a "disciplinary matter and all responsible parties will be disciplined"

Do you think schools should do "unannounced active shooter drills"?.

What "disruption"?
Anyone at the school was already being told by the alert system that there was an active shooter, and not being told it was just a drill.
Anyone not at the school finding out about it via the social media post wouldn't arrive until the drill was over anyway.

Sounds more like the school is pissed that the student publicized the incident to world and brought the well-deserved embarrassment and condemnation on the school that it's now receiving.
And thus, they're going to try and punish the student. Who probably wasn't even trying to humiliate the school and legit thought s/he may be about to die and was sending the alert message out so loved ones could find out about it promptly.

An actual shooting won't be announced, this is a good idea imo

Maybe just start saying at the beginning of the school year we have x amount of random drills throughout the year

Wait... do the schools actually do unannounced drills like this? What kind of educator thinks that is a good idea? Of course a bunch of kids are freaking out when you pull this kind of stuff.

Our schools do it with the police involved. Everything is well announced and the kids still get all antsy about it.

Well, if that's how they would act in a real situation, then obviously it's a good idea to know that before some loony with a gun shows up and their lockdown plan doesn't work because everyone is freaking out
