One of the arguments I have defending them is that parents can't afford to feed their kids...

...

Umm, if you can't feed your kids you shouldn't have kids anymore

Then why the hell are they paying for food at school if they can't afford it? Bring your own lunch, what a banana costs like 30 cents, grab a loaf bread and spam or whatever for like 5 bucks and you got a weeks worth for like 8 bucks

Do you not understand why? Because they were getting away with it. Which is why that school system in the story had lost $45k in lunches this year alone according to the article.

Dumbass school shouldn't be throwing out tabs then.

Personally, I think that the schools being so underfunded they can't even afford to feed their own fucking children is a much bigger deal than whether or not the parents can pay it. They already pay their taxes, they're just not being utilized for the children and their educations.

Why is it a schools responsibility to feed it's students? I never heard of it happening anywhere else.

You guys would be surprised at the amount of money that is spent on School Breakfast/Lunches each year. Many of these programs are federally funded.

We need more private school options. And we need people to be accountable for their children.

I think if someone sends their kid to a private school, they shouldnt have to pay the taxes that would go towards a public school. That would be a start.

I seem to recall eating lunch at school back when I still lived in Canada, but that was ages ago. Why, do Canadians leave school to go home to eat or something?

lolwut? Do you think that the children belong to the school rather than the parents? That's some pretty scary statist shit right there. As for taxes, not only are they *already* subsidizing school lunches (how else would they be offering them that cheaply?), but schools are also the largest local tax expenditure in addition to also collecting from the state and federal government. What's the second-largest, you ask? Welfare. (Although the two are sometimes reversed.)

https://www.urban.org/policy-centers/cross-center-initiatives/
state-local-finance-initiative/projects/state-and-local-backgrounders/
state-and-local-expenditures

The school lunch program is generally a convenience. Even more absurdly, there are countless students who get it free on the basis of low income *despite* those same students already receiving other food welfare benefits (granted, those are their only guaranteed meals each day, since their SNAP/EBT benefits are often being misused by their parents). Taxpayers are paying MULTIPLE times to feed other peoples' kids.

Other than that, you had greedy unions (which protect terrible teachers and stygmie education), overpaid administrators, etc, siphoning money that should go to teaching students.... and, of course, you have money being spent on school lunches which could be used to teach students.

What's with all this parents not paying for their kids to eat? I had to bring money for my lunch when I went to school except like one year my mom qualified to get me free lunches.

My neice brings her own lunch to school but I've seen her mom give her money to get a drink at lunch because they had run out of shit she was allowed to bring since her school bans sodas at school

I've heard it for several schools.

And true what you are saying but if these kids I'm talking about are just tossing them I doubt they are starving. Not trying to say I feel they should get rid of them though. Just maybe they could find something that's both healthy and tastes good?

The health thing always killed me though. If a kid is fat trust me it wasn't school lunch that did it.

It could be kids that eat at home throwing them out, too. You can still buy lunches even if you eat at home. And could just snack before throwing the rest away. Though, I never saw them as tasting horrible. Most of it wasnt near the best of anything. But I could still eat it without gagging or anything. Haha. And I agree that if a kid is kind fat, it most likely isnt the school food. They could get better tasting products... But its hard to please anyone. And no matter what, even if we got that, someone would try to make it better for a campaign, and probably make it worse...

Growing up I was always too poor for lunch money but too rich to qualify for free meals so in elementary school I was always the kid who literally had the food tray taken away from me by the lunch ladies. I wanted to just skip the line but the policy was that the teachers had to escort the kids to the cafeteria and the only way in was through the line and so I was forced to wait with everyone else even though I knew I couldnt get any. Since I was stuck in line anyway I made it a point to just pick up a tray and take the food to the cashier anyway knowing it was going to be taken away every time. Every once in a while one of the lunch ladies would feel pity and pay for it but that was rare.

Repeat that for 6 years.

No ive heard people say it's bad. I have a step sister still in highschool and a neice in elementary.

And I did say I doubt the kids tossing lunches I doubt are starving.

IDK though maybe this gen (or at least the ones I've heard from) are more whiny/picky than I was. But I have heard the lunches are different because they want it to be healthy. Like only whole wheat bread. I know of only one brand of whole wheat bread I like but I know the schools ain't shelling out the money for that brand. (Stuff is amazing though I actually like it more than white bread)

Maybe. Idk. I only hear about it from co-workers and family/close friends these days. Since I dont go anymore. Ive never heard it was that bad. My sisters still in high school. And I have little cousins and kids of friends in. But it also could be the area or just use to it. Or maybe they are picky. Though, I know I wouldnt eat the wheat bread, either. So, maybe they just changed a lot of the food to be healthy. Maybe the ones who dont complain know how to get enough of what they like. When I was in school, we had the normal lunch line. But also the la cart line, as well. Which had fries, soft pretzels, and stuff. But more expensive. So, maybe we had more kids going there, too. The regular stuff wasnt bad back then. And cheaper. I would go to the other line to get more food some days. But back then, I guess the food was better since they werent on this weird health kick...

Some schools in the US use to be like that. But I think some stopped when student were hit by a car or something. Idk. The school had to take care of us and all. I do know the high school where I am now lets kids leave for lunch. I see them on the way to work everyday. Because I have to drive past when they are heading for lunch... and getting in the way. Stopping in the road to wave to friends. Honking the horn to get the attention of someone. Things like that...

They might let kids do it back home again, as well...

When I was in school, you had the lunch you could buy for a dollar (choice of 3 meals typically, and a milk of your choice) or if you couldn't afford that you got a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and skim milk. I was eating that through most of first grade, but it ended up making me sick most days so my mom would just pack a lunch. By the time I got to high school though, I would just skip lunch since I was going home in a couple of hours anyways.

That's some BS free lunch kids at my school got the same thing those of us paid got and we paid closer more than a dollar

When I say that's bs I don't mean youre lying just that it's fucked up

This was 30 years ago mind you. Schools tend to be a little better about their lunch programs now (and inflation).

I also think it got raised to $1.25 sometime around 5th or 6th grade, but I wasn't buying lunches by that point.
