Sure they arent LotR but what IS? You shouldnt be comparing the two. The Hobbit is its own special trilogy thats very well made with lots of time, effort and heart put into it :)

I think if they had done two movies instead of three it would have been solid

The third one especially just feels so padded

It's a travesty tbh

Me and everyone I know (that watched it) just refers to it as the trilogy that shall not be named

That's one of the biggest problems, it shouldn't be a trilogy

The Hobbit has less than 100k words (a bit short of 97k) meanwhile FotR has 177k, TT has 143k and RotK has 134k

Might as well have made each movie of LotR its own trilogy

No theyre not

The Hobbit isnt a prequel. Its an almost unrelated story written years before the LotR trilogy. Story wise, character-wise, and tone-wise, theyre different tales altogether.

^This

If I was looking for movies exactly following the books I would be completely disappointed in both trilogies. However understanding how Hollywood works I found both enjoyable, although I loved the novels much more. Tolkien was genius in my opinion

Star Wars prequels were Lucas selling out to toy companies and were trash.

Switching from two to three films midway through making the first really gutted the story. The obviously focus grouped choices made in the second and third were other huge problems, though partly symptomatic of the first.

The Hobbit actually hurts to watch because it's mostly from the same talent as LotR and the amount of effort and passion put into it is readily apparent. But it just doesnt add up to something meaningful, mostly due to reasons outside the hands of those who made it.

On its own merits the films are just fine, but I can't watch them due to how much it feels like a giant misstep.

I can't wait for the Silmarillion films where we get a Galadriel Gandalf fuck scene, and watch Legolas skateboard down Morgoth's back while in a love triangle with Beren and Luthien.

Saw Desolation, which was alright. What I saw of Five Armies (probably close to the whole thing) was kinda meh. And, honestly, out of the LotR films, I only really liked Fellowship.

The problem with the hobbit films is the book was written before the lord of the rings books, before Tolkien had even conceived of all that stuff. The Hobbiy is a kid's book. The lord of the rings is much darker and more complex. But since they made the LoTR films first, and they used the same characters/actors where applicable in the "prequels", they had to tie the stories together. So what you've got is this children's story with occasional horrific tonal inconsistencies and characters who hadn't been written yet thrown in for recognition and unneeded continuity. Not to mention that the characters in the hobbit films who were not in the books are stealing screen time from characters who were, and so we're left with like half the company of dwarves having fewer than 5 lines of dialogue each in the entire trilogy. They have no personalities and are completely unmemorable because they literally don't do anything worth mentioning.

I'm not even going into the shit lazy CGI or Legolas and his bullshit magic elf phsyics. Literally the jarring tonal shifts and under developed characters are enough to ruin the film.

So when are we getting a LotR Sequel trilogy?

idk, they're probably waiting for Tolkien to write it >_>

In all honesty, I kinda expect that we'll eventually see a sequel just because there's too much fucking money not to do something like that. Or they could take some of the stuff from The Silmarillion.

haven't seen them, but it's supposed to be that Peter Jackson had planned out LotR over the course of 3 and half years, whereas for the Hobbit, he inherited the project from Guillermo del Toro and had only a few weeks or something to prepare. They were filming scenes that had never been choreographed or story boarded...

Yeah, I feel thats the reason they relies so much on cgi and post prediction makeup to fix things, as it was faster and easier...

Still, I dont mind the cgi. Its well done and the film still has heart regardless

Howard the Duck is 10x better than the Star Wars prequels, so that's not exactly a high bar to climb.

Personally, I felt the first one was bad, the second one was excellent - not quite LotR calibre, but at least in the right area code - and the third one was extremely meh.
