Where do you all want to go with your lives? What do you think you'll realistically be able to accomplish? What are you going to do to make it happen?

that IS a goal. a very noble one.

you ever just try to sit down and think "is there something i enjoy doing that is helpful to others?"

if not that try maybe "is there something i can feasibly do without serious detriment to myself that is helpful to others?"

thats where you start. after that its just a matter of refining the plan until you can make it a reality.

I try to plan my goals into 5-year plans. In 2014 I earned my bachelor degree, and I set a plan after graduation to work for 2 years in a career-relevant position before going back for graduate school to earn a better job. As of this Wednesday, I got the employment offer for the better job and will be graduating with two master degrees in 2019.

So 2019 will kick off my next 5-year plan, which as of now includes buying a home as a major to-do.

5 year plans are smart for sure, but do you ever try to plan for further in the future? what job you ultimately want to land yourself in 10 or 20 years down the line? what age you want to retire at? where you want to live, and who you want to live with?

I'm asking these questions because I am in a fucked up place right now.

Every goal that i spent the last 15 years trying to accomplish has been achieved. I've done all that I ever wanted to do and now i just feel like i completely lack any sense of direction. I dont want to spend the remainder of my life resting on my laurels so to speak. I just cant think of anything else that is important enough to me that I want to dedicate my time and effort to it long term enough to make any sort of difference. I feel like I have so much time left, and nothing i want to do with it.

Definitely. I'm always thinking ahead to the future because it means I don't have to think about the present!

what job you ultimately want to land yourself in 10 or 20 years down the line?

This job I've been hired for can be a career in federal government if I want it to be. We'll see how it goes. I've also thought about potentially going back into nonprofits in a management role, or joining a think tank as a lead analyst.

what age you want to retire at? where you want to live, and who you want to live with?

Never thought about retirement age honestly; people in my family tend to live long and work good jobs until they feel like stopping.
I'm always thinking about relocating abroad to Canada or the Netherlands. I can't predict who I'll live with because I don't know whom I'll meet over time; that's why I dropped shit like "get married" from my plans. I can't really plan for or around that.

Right now my goals are kind of complicated, but I will say that these are based on the fact that my office is closing and I am getting laid off in the near future (I know my end date, just can't legally divulge it on the internet):

1) Find a job that starts right after my end date, allowing my to collect my full severance and a full paycheck (I.E. Double Dip). This lets me pay off about of 1/3 of my remaining mortgage with the extra paycheck I will be getting, putting me about 5 - 7 years away from paying off my house (which will lead into semi-retirement where I can just take contract work when I need some money to live off of).

2) Barring #1, using my severance as leverage, find a job that is a promotion or decent improvement salary-wise that starts before my severance, but in the long term allows more career growth. This might set those "early retirement" plans back a few years, but also puts me in a better position when I am looking for contract work to get more interesting (and in tern more lucrative) jobs.

3) Assuming #1 or #2 don't work out (highly unlikely given the job market in my city), find a job before my severance runs out and I have to start dipping into savings.

TL/DR version: Use my lay-off as a way to make a ton of money I wouldn't have otherwise if my job was keeping me around.

That sounds like a good plan, but are work and retirement your only goals at the moment? Planning to wait until later to focus on other stuff?

Right now, yea. In my field when you get to a certain age you just get burnt out or end up kind of in a rut where you can't really advance career wise anymore. I just want to get the most out of my advancement before I hit that point. Plus I enjoy the work!

Once I hit retirement, I still feel I will be young enough to do the other cool stuff like travel, family, bucket list, etc. Plus it will be easier to do it with more then just a handful of vacation days to fit it in.

are you saying you want to make the money by playing music? if so, are you practicing playing every day? are you studying music theory to help you become a better song writer?

are you actively looking for a good woman who can contend with you and improve both of your lives?

So I already am a copyright holder for a band named Luminous. I plan to be a singer/dancer combo. I already have all the lyrics for the first album written down. Now I need to get in touch with a graphic artist, find a recording studio, and lastly find band mates.

But any actual music training? Like, can you actually write music? Or just lyrics?

Just lyrics, I'll leave the instrumentals to the instrumentalists.

Change the fuel pump on my Supra.

Make lesson plans for what I'm teaching next semester.

Finish my Christmas shopping and get packages mailed off to my kids and grandkids.

Lose weight but in a healthy manner. Diets been successful with 10lbs in 3 weeks and zero binge/purge or starve.

Contribute something of my own that my whole company uses. Software Development so some reusable code. Ive done several attempts but nothing has stuck yet

Start a scholarship program for mental health patients that have dropped out and want to go back. This was my situation, I dropped out and then went back after fixing myself and got a 4.0. But I was only able to do this because I had the money. Im too financially burdened to put much against this but Ive talked about it with my therapist and its doable.

Pipedream goal:
Bring alternative fuel to the US and lessen reliance on oil. This would be done using a combination of solar and nuclear power. The big sticking point would be convincing people of the safety of nuclear power so we can build more plants. Especially newer plants that can recycle fuel better. I draft arguments for it but I feel the real ticket would be wealth I can throw around. But this gets in the way of the scholarship which I care a lot about and feel that its more doable.

I feel that some kind of charitable goal would be good for you. And not just giving it money, getting behind an idea.

Learn how to program in R
Graduate college
Find work
Find work
Find work
Move out of my mother's house
Move to another state
Find fulfilling work
