Besides outside rallies, I mean. Cause pretty much nobody in these contests except Mario is pumping out games that are good, recent, and non-controversial at the same time. And even then, Megaman 11 went right back under the radar after two weeks of being out with almost nobody noticing it even happened.

Before last year it would have taken KHIII and FFVIIREMAKE to both be incredible.

After last year, NOTHING. BotW put him far far to out of reach.

Even something insane like CT Remake, and he gets in Smash wouldnt do anything now. BotW ended any hopes

Chase and Elaine are the newest protagonist, their game came out 3 weeks ago.

Snake could have done it had Kojima sayed and MGSV was like the oriignals but with Snake in it

Probably 2B or Geralt.

That said, objectively, why should they be able to compete with Link or Mario? 2B and Geralt each have a new widely-loved game in the last few years. So do Link and Mario. The difference is that Link/Mario also have well-loved games from the 2000s... and from the 90's... and from the 80's.

If other characters want to compete they need to also have 30+ years of widely-loved new games. That's the only way to get cross-generational support needed to compete with the strongest characters.

Nothing will dethrone Link. GameFAQs doesn't appeal enough to younger gamers, so its userbase will never change from the old school Nintendo oriented group it currently is, and that group won't be swayed by anything that happens, good or bad.

The site admin giving a damn and putting some earnest attempts into making this site relevant again could do it. I'd imagine if vote totals got back up to the stuff of the mid 00s the sheer amount of new users could really spin the results in a new exciting way (or if the poll was on every page on the site since the claim is this site is "just as popular as ever people just don't visit the home page!"), but that's even less likely than a FFVII remake magically making Cloud relevant again.

That's what I'm saying. there is no way a new game can compete with a franchise. Especially when nintendo turns out a "new" smash game every few years and a "new" mario kart. I mean at least their Pokemon games have new characters. Nintendo games are so successful because half the work is already done for them. They can focus on visuals and story because they don't need to put any effort into characters. Pure fighter games like Tekken or Mortal Kombat can't ever compete with Smash because the characters are already established. How many games do Mario and Link have? I'm sure I saw somewhere that Mario has over a 100 games linked to the franchise. Maybe if they greenlight a Link film to tie in with the Mario movie he might struggle.
