Dragon Quest 11 was amazing. The only reason I'm not finishing it now is because I'm playing my actual favourite series of modern JRPG's right now.Trails of Cold Steel 3 (and I think I have to get 4 now with the way 3 is progressing)

I would say that Persona 4 is a game with very few flaws, while Persona 5 has a lot more flaws. Nonetheless, I like 5 better, because where it does well it does really well.

Are you me? I had this same exact thought once I got far enough into it. Like, I thought FFVI was so deeply rooted in my nostalgia that it would never be dethroned, but DQXI is hitting all the right buttons for me.

Trails in the Sky is definitely worth it. I would recommend the PC version over the PSP however as the PSP version is a much older version that doesn't have an up to date translation or a lot of quality of life functions (like turbo mode) that the PC version has.

Also while Cold Steel is very good, its generally regarded of the weakest of the three Trails series.

And you'd be missing out on a ton of references if you started with Cold Steel anyway since the plot is continuous.

P3/4/5 are all wildly different. That's why they're great. You can play one and still play the others no problem (the Portable and Golden versions at least).

5 just has so much incredibly good stuff in it though. It has a bigger focus on side characters than the others, so the main story feels more sterile, but I think by the end that makes it come together really well. 3's main story is impossible to beat though. But lots of people prefer 4 because it's more happy slice of lifey.

It's all one continuous series so if you actually want the genuine experience you can't really skip. You can skip around on the order to an extent if you want but CS3 and CS4 at least aren't going to be as fully enjoyable without the previous games.

Also a lot of people prefer Sky over Cold Steel(albeit the first game is really slow, understandably since it's the very first game in a huge series so it kind of has a lot to set up)

P5 vs. DQXI is a real tough one. I ended up voting P5 just because while DQXI is pretty much traditional perfection, P5 actually pushes the RPG envelope way more and has amazing dungeons/mechanics to show for it.

Honorable mention for XC2 which I love but have to admit has major issues. The gacha system is pretty much entirely unforgivable and really damages the game for me. Now if we had a full-length game with the Torna expansion's set-up... that would be a real contender.

DQ11 was pretty good up til part 3 shit the bed. Game would be rather better if that part didn't exist. I really wanna check out Ys 8. Was waiting for the PC version to be fixed, but...

I didn't want to bring this up in my post but I definitely agree. Part 3's existence drags DQXI down so hard. I would actually argue it deserves a nearly perfect rating if it stopped at Part 2 but holy cow it takes a nosedive after that. Just goes to show that less is sometimes way more.

I just got a helpful email from Nintendo letting me know that Xenoblade 2 is $42 on the eShop right now (so is Mario Odyssey) which I believe is the cheapest it's ever been (barring indirect retailer discounts I guess). Also Valkyria Chronicles 4 is $30 again.

I'm on an Ys 8 high, though Berseria may be better. I am down on P5 but it's a good game. Haven't played the other 3.

The art direction of p5 is probably the best thing about the game

Gimme that p5 art and modern mechanics
with p2 cast and story and lack of dating sim and you got a game of the ever contender

Also swordz has legendarily bad taste so

Berseria > Torna > Persona 5 > Xenoblade 2

Ys VIII is very high on my "need to play" list. VC4 is sorta on it but I'd want/need to play VC1 first. DQ11 "we'll see" I haven't felt that interested in it but all the praise has made me a bit more curious.

All good though, however Berseria (and Torna) separate themselves from the pack here IMO.
