Took 38 bosses, but I finished a run as Rogue.

Shrine - 0/2 that steals a card from the opponents deck at the start of your turn.
Buff - Summon a second shrine at the start of the game.
Raging Contender - 6/8/4, Rush, Deathrattle: Fill the board with pirates.
Salty Looter - 6/6/6, BattleRattle: Steal a card from the opponents hand.

Honestly it's probably one of the weaker shrines, but it seemed like a whole lot of fun. It actually won me a game when I eventually fatigued that Warrior who has the shrine with attack equal to his armor.

My experience so far is that the middle stages are harder but the end is a lot easier. The bosses from 4-6 would just run away with games if I let them get any kind of momentum.

Blizzard.

Is.

Trash.

I mean, I'd chalk that particular situation/circumstance up to Activision. Eta: I'm not white-knighting Blizz here, they have more than their fair share of fuckery. But their Activision overlords said "spend less, publish more" and they have no choice but to do it.

Yeah, I'm getting rekt by the mid-bosses. Only had time for a handful of tries so I'm still learning the shrines/champions and what buffs I need. Having fun with it.

For once I agree with Ulti, the HotS situation is incredibly shitty. I got somewhat near competitive level in that game, so I know a few of the competitive people in-person. They had no warning this was coming. One of my favourite players just got signed back onto a team and was really excited. There were people who dropped out of college to pursue their esports dream.

If they had winded this down in a reasonable way like...still done an HGC for 2019 but announced it would be the final HGC I think it would be a lot more reasonable. Like yes, sure, I understand they can't be expected to provide a league infrastructure for a game forever--it's not like they're running Warcraft III tournaments in 2019. But the suddenness of this is really awful.

It also still comes as a surprise to me. The heroes of the storm finals at Blizzcon this year had a packed audience, with loads more people than the hearthstone audience, for example.

So im playing warlock. I put back in a single gnome because I almost cant win the kingsbane matchup without it unless I mega high roll.

In any case I get another warlock. I think he's discard... but like on turn one he just plays solarium and discards three cards. And im like "dude gotta play the quest first". So on turn 3 I have to play cards or pass because I'm on coin and play a librarian because i have spell stone, and a gnome... which mills soul warden... and he concedes. Honestly, I would have probably conceded after I turn 1 Solarium but you know.

So i've done more rumble run, and here are my thoughts.

Overall I think it's easier than both witchwood and Kobolds single player. Like there was a lot more rng that what you picked in witchwood would just completely be useless against a boss there. Even though more middle tier fights here are easier to lose, the sheer amount of synergy you can pick for your shrine seems a lot higher than the synergy you get with your powers in witchwood.

As far as the gameplay goes. Some classes are really fun, rogue especially I think has the best shrines in terms of just being fun to play. I also like the mage hero power one. You get stuff like that +1 hero power damage minion, the one that doubles damage, and you can get a helper that upgrades your hero power (1 mana 2/2 that you always get on your first turn).

I think some shrines are purposely made weaker or stronger than other ones to get varied experiences. But I didn't think much about the hero power one until I used it. The warlock one where the damage you take is reflected is cool too. If you get certain cards you can actually power through your deck into fatigue and combo out your opponent because they take the fatigue damage instead of you.

Now for things I don't like.

Even if they have different shrines, I wish they had different heroes for each of them. The flavor of the content is not really there for me. Like I understand your random troll hero is like some scrub working his way up the ladder but he's just so lame. I would have liked it if they let you pick from a list of varied characters even if it was just a cosmetic thing. This would also help with the lack of dialogue when you compare it to K&C and witchwood.

welp.

Like i picked hero power and got a bunch of hero power cards. I picked the stealth for rogue one and got well honestly almost with minions is good there. With the secret hunter one I got a lot of spells, etc.

The special helpers too are like made for certain shrines. The 3 mana 1/1 immune dude is so good with the stealth shrine because every time the shrine dies he gets a buff.

Oh yeah, for sure, the special helpers I was able to find ones spell related (I had one with overkill add 3 spells to my hand). Still needed to draw that though.

Finally beat it once on like my 11th try. I did it with what seemed like one of the weakest shrines: the paladin one for when a minion survives damage, it gets Divine Shield.

What I didn't realize is that it's a handbuff deck. And there's a potential offering after the 2nd win where you get a 6-mana 2/5 Taunt that only takes 1 damage at a time. Pro-strat: getting that thing up to a 5/8 completely breaks whatever game you play it in.

Took me 6 tries or so.

Eventually got the mage hero power shrine, and also the partner that's a 2/2 for 1 and upgrades your hero power and always starts in your opening hand.

That combo should consistently get 8 wins, I think. So...here's the thing--I think tempo is very important; if your opponent gets board control early you lose your shrine and then you're probably fucked. And I think drawing teammates is very important, since they are massively better than regular cards in your deck.

Being guaranteed a 1 drop, guaranteed to draw a synergistic teammate, and having a 0 mana hero power to take board control is a really big deal. On turn 1 you get to ping for 1, play your 2/2, ping for 2 dealing 3 damage to the enemy shrine. Enemy shrine probably dies on turn 2 (unless it's an 8+health shrine).

Admitedly, I didn't have a boss play one of the full board clear teammates. Unbound punisher is kind of bullshit when played by the AI, and might have stopped this run, maybe? But for the most part this shrine felt reasonably strong, but more importantly extremely consistent.

Unbound Punisher ended one of my runs, and nearly ended the run I eventually won on when I lost an entire board to it but managed to recover and win with something like 6 health. That was the second strongest card I ever came across, right behind the Mage dude that casts Fireball every time a spell is cast, along with the shrine that gives you all of those 0 mana spells. Over two turns I ate 13 or 14 Fireballs.

So I've been thinking about this card, Dozing Marksman:

https://www.hearthpwn.com/cards/90278-dozing-marksman

2 mana 0/4, with +4 attack while damaged.

And...honestly, the numbers just feel a little too low. I like the concept, but maybe it should be a 2 mana 0/5. The obvious comparison is Amani Berserker, but Amani is a 5/2 if pinged compared to a 4/3 for Dozing Marksman. And OK sure, 4/3 is arguably better than 5/2, but not so much better that marksman feels worth the effort. (And obviously the Amani having any attack before it's damaged is a big upside, because it can "ping itself" by killing a silver hand recruit).

Like...I find the concept interesting. I think maybe a 0/5 would have been actually interesting enough that I would be tempted to put together an off-meta deck. A 0/5 becomes a potential 4/4, maybe I'd try an Even Mage or something. But 0/4 is just...not...there.

The only way I could see Dozing Marksman seeing play is if you were playing some kind of whirlwind warrior deck. Even so, Amani is still probably a better option, and that's going to be second fiddle to Berserker.

I've slowly started to care less about the single player stuff as time has gone on. I loved the adventures, and thought Dungeon Run was fantastic, where I completed it with all nine classes, then I burnt out of whatever the Witchwood thing was called after a couple runs, had zero interest in Boomsday puzzles, and played two games of the Rumble before quitting out of it.

I guess I'm just here to play good decks and win games against people on the ladder. No memes for me.

I've been at an exact 50% win rate for the last week which has not been very fun. I really don't want to play Odd Paladin or one of the good Hunter/Druid decks, but I may not have a choice if I want to purely win games, which is where most of my enjoyment comes from.

There just seems to be less effort put into the single player. I mean like I thought puzzle run was pretty good actually but I think there's a clear downgrade in each other solo content they put out since they got rid of adventures.

Like I said a big downside for rumble run is the flavor is just not there compared to the other content.

Mmm...I mean, I was skeptical at first "they're doing a third version of dungeon run?" But it's actually reasonably interesting, just because there are 27 shrines, and even within the same class each shrine really feels different.

I mean, whenever they repeat a format they've done recently it's going to feel like less effort than coming up with a new mode (and less fresh). But I think Rumble Run is better gameplay than the witchwood. The witchwood probably had the best plot of the three (lol hearthstone plot) but only four classes and two of them were pretty braindead.

So i had a game as tesspionage rogue vs a quest mage. Like by all accounts I should probably lose this but since I'm talking about this I obviously won.

So like sometime in the mid game I used a stolen steel and picked an aluneth because I was like "well when I do play espionage I can just get all the cards". I had already played hemet and my deck was really small already.

In any case fast forward and my opponent has completed the quest. His deck is small enough where I know he can win next turn. So I drop Valeera to give me a turn with the stealth. my aluneth gave me a frost bolt, pyroblast, and a sorcerers apprentice. I go face with the minions i have and slam the pyroblast in the mage's face and pass. My opponent does a freeze etc and passes back.

My draw comes and it's archmage antonidas. Keep in mind it costs 1. I play sorcerer's apprentice, followd by the free one, drop a 1 mana archmage, play a 0 mana frost bolt, spam fireballs.

Blizzard might have actually created a rotation we want more than any other, not because mammoths expansions are CRAZY strong (because they are strong, dont get the wrong idea) but because year of the raven has just been on a notably lower power level.

Edit: Also, @davidponte should now hate Kingsbane substantially less.

And it apparently goes live tomorrow. Glad they didn't announce it far ahead of time this time, nothing like telling everyone a card is busted and needs to be fixed like making them continue to play against it for a while in said busted state.

Wild Growth, Nourish, and Level Up! up 1 mana each
Wild Growth and Nourish have been present in every mid-range, combo, and control Druid deck since their introduction in the Basic and Classic set. When cards from the Basic and Classic set are too powerful, they can have negative long-term effects on the game. Continuously playing against these cards can start to feel repetitive, and they can feel so mandatory that they stifle creative deckbuilding decisions. By increasing the mana cost of both cards by one, we expect them to be considerations in late-game control Druid decks, but more difficult to fit in strategies that dont directly take advantage of ramping mana.

Odd Paladin has consistently been one of the most powerful and most played decks since its introduction in The Witchwood. By removing Level Up from Odd Paladin, we still expect it to be a competitive board control deck, just with more consistent damage output that should be easier to play around.

Saronite Chain Gang now specifically summons another SCG rather than a copy of this minion
Shudderwock brings an interesting combo to the table, but playing Shudderwock multiple times in a single game can be frustrating. Changing Saronite Chain Gang makes playing multiple Shudderwocks in a game much more difficult. Shudderwock should now exist as a powerful one-turn effect rather than constantly copying itself with Saronite Chain Gangs Battlecry.

Leeching Poison down one mana, Lifesteal only effective on the turn played
We love the fantasy of building a powerful weapon over the course of a game with Kingsbane, but granting it a permanent Lifesteal effect with Leeching Poison resulted in an endgame with few weaknesses, as well as conflicting with our philosophy that Rogues should not have persistent self-healing effects. Making the Lifesteal effect only active for one turn should address some of the power level issues with Kingsbane Rogues late game.

Level Up to 6 mana

I'm genuinely really happy about the Odd Paladin nerf.

Like...yes, I know the deck has counters (including apparently Shudderwock Shaman) but it fucked experimental decks so very hard. Like...nearly every Whizbang deck has a bad matchup against it (when Whizbang decks usually do OK against aggro decks, since most of them are midrange with some anti-aggro tools).

I managed to make a hunter deck with a good winrate against Odd Paladin, but I had to dedicate like...eight cards in my deck primarily to be anti-aggro. It's not enough to clear their board twice, you need to be thinking about clearing their board again on turn 11, cause they might attack with Vinecleaver, hero power, and level up.

I think it'll still be a good deck, but it won't be such a threat on turn 11 anymore. It will still be able to kill on turn 6, but maybe it will be like a normal aggro deck now where if you live till turn 8 and play a primordial drake you've won.

Chain Gang summons copies of Chain Gang

I don't mind the chain gang nerf, and I'll probably be messing around with Shudderwock in decks cause I still think it has potential. But man, I want a dust refund on the Grumble I crafted now, cause I think that card will actively be a bad inclusion in new Shudderwock decks.

I won't be disenchanting my Chain Gangs (well, my excess copies I guess) cause hey, still good in like...most of the Even decks, still good in Zoo. Possibly still good in a no-grumble shudderwock (summoning taunts from giggling inventor was good in no-grumble shudderwock decks before).

It might be time for another instance of Evolve Shaman, now with the introduction of Former Champ (good evolve target, and a way to get Shudderwock to summon 5/5s).

Leeching Poison

Yeah, this is exactly the card I wanted them to target from Kingsbane. Like...I had joked on reddit that this card should cost 6 mana, cause it normally heals as much or more than Reno Jackson. And I've mentioned before that I don't mind playing against the Kingsbane decks that cut Leeching Poison and focus on aggro (they might kill me sometimes, but at least games fucking end).

I think pirate rogue running Raiding Party will still probably run Kingsbane as its weapon of choice (LOL serrated tooth), but it's going to be mostly a pirate deck now with like...not that many weapon buffs (probably deadly poison and one or two pirates).

Wild Growth and Nourish +1 mana

Nourish kind of deserved it based on current statistics, but I feel a little weird about this nerf too, because the rotation of UI is so soon, and as soon as UI rotates, Nourish goes back to being primarily being used for "draw 3 cards", which is a perfectly fair 5 mana spell no different from Sprint or Arcane Intellect.

Wild Growth...oof. They could have made this "gain a mana crystal" instead of "gain an empty mana crystal", but I guess they like to keep nerfs as simple as possible so as to not confuse players. This card looks worse than Greedy Sprite now, a card that's played in 0.2% of decks (mostly spiteful druid). The only upside of new Wild Growth over Greedy Sprite is that you are guaranteed the mana next turn, whereas sprite, maybe they don't kill it. But...well...please name the 5 mana card that you are ramping into from 3 mana. I'll wait. Remember Nourish costs 6 now. So...I think most current Druid decks don't need to get to 5 mana right away, and would rather get the body from Sprite.

Also, I guess every singe wild Druid deck for the rest of time will be running Jade Blossom now.

Post nerfs--we'll see about spell hunter; it was popular just because everyone wanted to try out Zul'jin. Probably good, but probably not unbeatable. It's probably a deck with a lot of 55%-60% winrate matchups.

The best deck in the format was according to Dog APM priest, which is untouched, but only Dog can play it, so that's fine.

The deck I'm kind of worried about is Quest Rogue. All of the people who like doing degenerate stuff were busy with Kingsbane.

According to Tempostorm, the deck with the best winrate against spell hunter (at least among decks that aren't getting nerfed) is OTK DK Paladin. It's also got like a 25% winrate against Quest Rogue.

Also quietly lurking is all versions of Cube Hunter--you know, the strongest deck from last expansion that people have been ignoring because Zul'jin is shiny.

While these nerfs are all good, hunter will probably be 90% of decks on ladder.

Better fire up my odd warrior deck.

Damn I wasn't really following the game too much after the expansion, but these are some fucking nuclear option nerfs. My first reaction is that Blizzard must be extremely desperate to get people to come back to the game this soon after an expansion drops.

Fuckin rip Druid, it was definitely out of hand but it's been one of my favorite classes since the game launched. I thought they'd hit Nourish or Wild Growth, not both.

They should lose their players more often if it means I no longer have to play against garbage like Kingsbane and Shudderwock.

I agree those decks are problems in a way, but it's really just a band-aid for the fact that they still haven't printed any meaningful, non-random interaction with combo decks.

Side note, not nerf-related: I picked up the Winter bundle and unpacked Keleseth and Kathreena (so far). Feel like the game is telling me something....

Besides the obvious use of those two, there's a sweet Spirit of the Shark deck (basically a tempo rogue) that uses Keleseth and I was on the fence about crafting him over the past weekend, but didn't want to spend the dust on a soon to be rotated card (I do dabble in the Wild format a little, so it wouldn't be a total waste). Glad I didn't pull the trigger.
