Uh, I assume so. I don't really care about fighting games (though it was cool when they had the Mortal Kombat segment), but I don't feel that affected my enjoyment much. If you're moderately familiar with Street Fighter you should be fine?

I should check out Tonegawa, loved Kaiji, and this might be up my alley even though different etc.

On running out of stuff to watch, that's never possible! Everybody gotta watch Maison Ikkoku and City Hunter, masterpieces, the 1980s is pretty cool.

It's a comedy. Not really what I wanted there. In fact the polar opposite, very difficult to imagine being turned off more by a show I was looking forward to, especially in a season where it was being absolutely crushed in it's genre.

But again, I only made it though two episodes.

I've had this question too. A lot of the like small things in the show are very much enhanced by how much they really nail the general perception of what gaming and gamers were like back then and even the progression of how it changed during the period of time the show runs. It really feels like a time machine. Like the big parts of the show you don't need any of that, and the core of the show is really good. But I think it moves from being really good to impressive if you have personal experience in the source material.

On today's episode of Robazoid vs the Eternal Backlog, I finished more stuff from last season.

We Rent Tsukumogami was surprisingly not bad. The living items provided a Toy Story-esque comedic vibe at times (and were kind of lame at other times, but I digress), but the real focus of most of the plots was on piecing together the intricacies of relationships between people. Skillful writing for the mysteries and their emotional payoffs made up a lot for the rather weak premise and, quite frankly, poor production values. Still, I don't want to make it sound like I'm raving about this too much, especially since I liked it a whole lot less than the three other anime I mostly badmouthed yesterday. There was only one episode of this that I would describe as really good, and while most of the rest were at least decent it was still a below-average anime. I just went into this with super low expectations and it managed to surpass them! If you have to watch one of the antique mystery anime from last season, definitely pick this over Holmes of Kyoto. Tsukumogami blows that shitty Holmes anime out of the water in every regard.

Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs was also surprisingly good! Ecchi anime are always hit-or-miss for me, but this one wound up being alright. I liked Yuuna a lot, and quite a few of the other side characters were a lot of fun as well. I even liked Kogarashi, he had more personality than the typical cardboard-cutout ecchi harem protagonist. I loved the running gag where he could face every new situation because he'd spent some time in the past possessed by a ghost with a helpful skill. Mostly, though, I think this managed to click with me because I have a soft spot for spiritual stories. The plots of fighting ghosts while helping other ghosts was always neat, even if they were usually just used as excuses to set up accidentally groping all the ladies.

Ok I think it was actually 18 but same thing.

To give an actual answer, I don't it's a show that particularly lends itself either to marathon-ing or watching slowly. Just go with however you feel like watching it imo. If the question is "should I watch it at all?" then uh yes. Very yes.

Well the question is more, do I want to watch it now and cut down on my catching up on other shows from 2018 for the awards, or do I want to wait to watch it until later and just focus on the 2018 shows for the rest of this month

Toradora was one of the first anime I watched (probably my fourth or fifth). I enjoyed it a lot at the time but in retrospect now that I've seen more anime, it was mostly just average. Taiga and Ryuji were the only characters I really liked, the rest were mostly forgettable.

In fact, I think Toradora was the first anime I watched on my own. It was either that or SAO. (Watched both anime over the same spring break and don't remember which was first)

I'd seen a few before that but it was all stuff I was watching with my roommate because he wanted to.

(Also I'm not counting stuff like DBZ that I saw as a kid)

Im not saying it did, but its popularity sure seemed to spark more of them getting anime probably like how you can blame a certain other anime or two as the reason we get 25 isekai or idol shows a year

Is girls forcibly moving in with the male lead really that common of a setup, especially for it to be compared to isekai and idols? I haven't thought about it for too long so I'm probably missing some obvious ones, but I can only think of two that I've seen that really fit that description (Nyarko-san and Monster Musume). What are some others?

Started watching Devilman Crybaby.

Masaaki Yuasa really is the best in the business, or at least damn close to it. That was probably the strongest start of the now 3 shows of his I've seen, but on the other hand this genre is much less my type of show than Tatami Galaxy or Ping Pong. So, we'll see where this ends up. (This also reminds me I need to find some way to watch his two recent movies...)

Also holy shit could this guy have found a shittier person on the planet to put his trust lmao

"I trust you!"

*friend takes him to heavy drug party, starts violent riots eventually inciting literal devils to brutally massacre everyone in attendance, and then turns him into a devil himself*

More stuff finished from last season. It'd be nice if I could say this was the last of it but there's still three shows left to finish. At least I'm finally making decent progress again!

Angels of Death was so incredibly boring. It started really dark and atmospheric in the first episode, but it fell of a cliff fast after that. Rachel is one of the most low-energy, uninteresting characters I've ever seen in an anime. Her voice only had two tones, one where she sounded bored and another where she was still bored but was slightly louder. There was a narrative reason for it but fiction is supposed to be interesting for the viewer to watch and she wasn't. Isaac had slightly more personality, but he was mostly just annoying with his constant stupidity and yelling. All the side characters sucked too, either sounding as bored as Rachel or somehow managing to cackle mindlessly even more than Isaac. As for the story, there were several 'tense' scenes that were little more than faithful recreations of entering a video game puzzle room and slowly inspecting everything, which was a chore to sit through. Probably 50% of the sixteen episode runtime consisted of Isaac and Rachel having the same slow, boring conversation over and over again. The fact that this junk got sixteen episodes pisses me off, too. There are a lot of good 12/13 episode anime that I think could have greatly benefited from a few extra episodes to pace things out or spend more time with the characters. Angels of Death didn't deserve it at all, and in fact having those extra episodes to slow down the already glacial pacing only made it worse.

Phantom in the Twilight was slightly better, but it wasn't great either. It had a fairly strong start, especially for a show with a reverse harem setup. Ton was a strong character with a mind of her own, not just an audience self-insert who drooled over the hunky boys. I'd say the first arc of this show was fairly strong, featuring solid introductions, decent action, and a clear goal that I wanted the characters to achieve. Then the show started repeating itself rather than accomplishing anything or advancing, with most of the subsequent arcs just being slight tweaks of the first. By the end I just didn't care anymore, which is sad for something that had such a strong start.

Huh, I just noticed some anime called 'Hero Mask' listed this season on MAL and I guess this is a new Netflix original that just came out? From what I can tell it's a real one like AICO and B: The Beginning, not an airing one that they stole. I don't recall hearing about this before, I wonder if it's any good. Early MAL reviews aren't exactly positive, and the main character is named 'James Blood' which makes me want to back away slowly. I dunno.
