Hasn't Hulu always gotten almost all Funimation shows?

I at least know they did during the period when I was in college (2011-2015) and too cheap to pay for subscription services elsewhere. I don't know what happened during the period when Crunchyroll and Funimation were merged. I also don't know the timeliness with which series got added to Hulu, as I didn't really watch airing anime then.

8. A Place Further Than the Universe (Crunchyroll)

A high-spirited, jokey anime series about four teenage girls who join a scientific expedition to Japans Antarctic research station might sound like a show with a pretty specific audience. But A Place, written by Jukki Hanada and directed by Atsuko Ishizuka, is a funny and moving coming-of-age story that should translate across all boundaries of age or culture. Never mawkish or contrived, its an absolutely authentic depiction of how friendship can overcome adolescent anxiety and grief. (Streaming on Crunchyroll.)

Hulu does have a lot of Funi shows. But if I'm understanding this correctly, Hulu will pretty much have first dibs on everything Funi gets in the future. So is imagine most of Funi's will end up in Hulu. Possibly even exclusive to Hulu. It also sounded like Hulu will have some say and pull in Funi acquisitions.

Time for my final thoughts on Hunter x Hunter (2011). First I'll tag some thoughts about the final arc, then I'll do general thoughts.

I thought the election arc was good. I wasn't a fan of the vice chairman but when his motives were fully revealed at the end, that was pretty good and redeemed a lot of the more annoying parts. I'm not sure Cheadle will be able to run the hunter organization though, the whole arc was her getting jerked around in ways I doubt Netero ever was. The need for a strong leader was also made fairly clear when Hisoka and Illumi basically murdered their way through an entire Hunter faction! I've never understood how this setting functions to begin with though, given how many super-murderers, creatures, and weapons of mass destruction there seem to be.

The Killua portion of the arc was my favorite part of it though. A few years ago I read through a bunch of the spooky items on the SCP Foundation website, and Alluka would have fit in there no problem. I liked her as a character, but also how her powers worked (they showed the scene of that poor butler being wrung so many times, it was great). I think it lost something near the end when Killua circumvented all the rules no problem, but oh well. Gon meeting Ging was nice too even if I agree with everyone else in that he's a terrible person/father. I would've voted Biscuit in the first rounds, but after that punch I was all aboard Leorio for chairman!

One final thing that was neat, there were a few times during the ant arc where I wondered where Hisoka was because that seemed like the sort of thing he would get a huge boner for. Turns out he just doesn't follow the news, LOL. It was neat that they acknowledged it.

So overall, Hunter x Hunter was a pretty amazing show. There were a few low points, as to be expected from something with 148 episodes, but on the whole it was entertaining and the highs were all really good. All of the arcs were enjoyable, but if I had to rank them...

Arena > Greed Island > Chimera Ant > Exam > Election > Yorknew > Zoldyck

Favorite characters: Biscuit, Palm.

Alluka was pretty easily my least favorite part of HxH. Fuck that entire last arc. I did like some of the other stuff but it hardly matters.

Chimera Ant > Yorknew > Exam > Greed Island > Arena > Election > Zoldyck, is my ranking for the record.

Chimera Ant and Yorknew are legitimately fantastic. Exam and Greed Island are solid anime but not really anything special in the grand scheme of the things. The rest are varying degrees of bad.

In my continuing quest to clear out my backlog, I finished a few more things from last season. Quick thoughts:

My Hero Academia S3 had a few super-great moments, and I enjoyed seeing the characters interact with all their fun powers being set against each other. With that said, there were a few stretches that I was bored with, which hadn't happened at any earlier point in the series. Part of me wonders if it was because I watched this while it aired instead of binging it like the earlier seasons. I just had trouble getting as invested in what was happening. Despite all of its epic moments, this season also made me realize I didn't love MHA as much as I thought I did. After S2 I ranked it in my top ten, but when I had to make room in there for Revue Starlight this was the least painful anime in my top ten to remove. It's still really good, S3 just felt like it was missing that magic spark the earlier seasons had, I guess.

Cells at Work was a fun anime, and I enjoyed Red Blood Cell's adventures in the body. The anime peaked in the first episode, though, and it all felt like more of the same from there. Quite a few episodes also leaned too hard into the education half of edutainment, for my tastes. I preferred it when the events of the body were cloaked more heavily in symbolism (not sure if that's even the right word but I'm tired, I mean stuff like snow falling when the body is cold and they don't necessarily need to spell it out) rather than straight representations (let's stop the action to explain what a parasite is. Now let's stop the action again to explain the damage the parasite is doing. Here's the cell that defeats parasites... ugh I'm bored, just have it melt something and the cell stab it, I'll fill in the blanks on my own). Still a solid watch, just not as amazing as I thought it would be after the first episode.

Overlord S3 was easily the weakest season of the series. The whole thing felt so lazy, and I'm not just talking about the terrible CGI. There were several events that should have been super impactful, but instead almost all of them fell flat for me. I mean, it was still Overlord so it wasn't terrible. I just hope, if it gets a fourth season, that they have a slightly larger budget and put a bit more thought into presenting little details in order to form a better whole. This felt like they hit all the big moments from the source material but missed all the minor aspects that would've given them real meaning.

I realized while writing this that I sound super down on all of these, which is odd because I ranked them all above average! I just had higher hopes for all of them, I guess, so I couldn't help but talk about how they let me down. Ah well.

Finally went and watched Neo Yokio, which was actually awesome!? I wasn't really interested in watching it, since it seemed like it'd just be a pile of crap, and I don't usually get into watching bad stuff to make fun of it (though I sometimes do). However, my friend really wanted to check it out, and it turned out to be legit good? Most of the reviews or whatever that I've seen of it talk about how unintentionally bad it is, and even the more positive ones usually say that it's unintentionally funny. That sentiment really confuses me, since everything in Neo Yokio seems like it's done intentionally. Sure, pretty much everything that occurs is ridiculous and stupid, but that's a good thing for a comedy. The show knows exactly how dumb it is and wants you to laugh at it. The best part is that it's consistent. Every episode comes up with more ridiculous new stuff to laugh at, and different ways of presenting new jokes. Definitely hoping it get an S2 and not just the Christmas special!

High Score Girl beated. I dunno, this show just felt really inconsistent to me? It started out quite well, the the relationship between Yaguchi and Oono growing in a pretty strong way. I was actually kind of emotional with the big scene in episode three, which I wasn't really expecting. Hidaka isn't really all that interesting though, IMO. Her whole character is basically just that she likes Yaguchi. She did get more interesting after the time skips, but that aspect of her made her not all that compelling most of the time, especially since he never likes her back at all. The show took quite a while to get warmed up again after the focus switched back over to Oono, and even then it still had a lot of weird not so good writing stuff. The last episode was kind of painful: a huge event happens, but we don't get to see the aftermath. And then the show ends with a cliffhanger. It's annoying because it felt like they could've had a good, solid ending if they wanted to, but they just didn't. Bah.

As for some individual elements of the series:

The video game focus was cool, most of the time. It was better when Yaguchi was hanging out with Oono, since he explained things the way he would with a fellow gamer. Him talking to Hidaka wasn't quite as fun, since the explanations were so much more basic. I liked Guile a lot, and it was cool that they managed to get the game animations into the show like that.

Oono never talking was super dumb. Most of the time I could ignore it since Yaguchi was so talkative even with other characters, but then I'd remember that she didn't talk for no reason and just augh. You can't have the main heroine of the show not say anything ever for no reason!

Yaguchi's mom was the best. She was the funniest character (recurring gags like Yaguchi getting hit by a car were not funny...), and it was basically awesome every time she appeared. Her dialogue was amazing, the creepy animations she had were hilarious, and her VA was #1 (Satomi Arai needs to be in every show IMO). Plus she was great in more serious moments, too. Should've just been a show about Yaguchi hanging out with his mom tbqh.
