#45: Mr. Game & Watch

Quirky nostalgia character that we are stuck with forever now. Mr. Game & Watch has a set that goes full RNG. Playing him more casually, honestly, in such a sense, if you are picking him its probably just to go around trying to 9 people to death because nothing is more infuriating than losing to full random. Hes way deeper than that, of course, but honestly not the most exciting of characters. He is, after all, a single color flat 2D thing.

#44: Marth

Back to purging out the fire emblem. Honestly, Chrom is cooler, and Ike's up special is cooler anyway, which it seems Chrom is taking. Thats going to basically give Chrom the "I feel like playing generic fire emblem swordsman slot". There really is only need for one of those, so I had to cut Marth loose here. Theres no guarantee which one I'll eventually settle on as "FE Swordsman pick", so whatever slot Chrom ends up here could get swapped with whoever as time goes on. Marth was my pick in Smash 4, but it still doesn't ever elevate him from "Generic FE Swordsman" status.

i think incineroar is a stupid pokemon but in smash he looks fucking hilarious

I'm the opposite - I actually like Incineroar in Pokemon, but I don't think he looks fun to play as in Smash at all. He just seems like such an on-the-nose, uninteresting addition to the roster (though his render looks great at least). But, I'll still give him a chance once I unlock him, and form my final opinion from there.

I think Tapu Koko would have been the coolest Sun/Moon rep, with Decidueye as a close second.

#43: King Dedede

If you haven't gotten the idea that we are dropping off most of the slow and lumbering characters, I'm telling you again we are dropping off the slow and lumbering characters. Dedede fits that description aptly, and if you are picking Dedede, you are probably doing it just to repeatedly throw spiked creatures at your enemies, and not because of some other reason. The rest of his kit is just so painful to use that when you try it you'll just go back to hammering things at people again. Again, hes another absolute necessity to the game, hes just not a particularly fun character to play.

#42: Snake

Snake is about to have his most relevant gaming appearance since...Brawl(4 may have come out after, but its been awhile)? That is kind of sad. Once a beloved character his Smash status is falling to that of a relic from gaming's past. Snake is a good character, but for a dude that is not slow and lumbering, there a pretty high commit to most of his attacks, and when you press some of them you feel locked in for hours. Yes, i know he was pretty high tier, he just never felt particularly natural for me to play.

#41: Wii Fit Trainer

I have to admit, Wii Fit Trainer attempting to fight a cataclysmic event with exercise absolutely influenced this ranking in a positive direction. Wii Fit Trainer represents the horrible gimmick of the Wii generation but in absolutely quirky and enjoyable way. Shes still not much of a character, but I think shes still a good representation of a fairly important age in Nintendo's history. I'm sure a few Smash down the line we'll look back and think "what the hell is she still doing here", but we arent quite at that point yet. We'll all be a lot more old and bitter which I'm sure will make my early writeups all the more enjoyable and rage inducing.

#40: Peach

Light, check, floaty, check, a bit of an annoying voice, check. These things are pretty bad, but sometimes its satisfying to float at a weird level and attack from above. Peach is another character you really are going to play to chuck items at people repeatedly. Some people like that, I guess. Toad is the ultimate troll move, adding to Peach's annoyance level, while possibly also keeping toad out of the game.

#39: Luigi

Didn't realize we were going to have a Mario character exodus here, but here is Luigi for you too. As I mentioned it earlier, you've basically got 3 characters that play like Mario here. While Luigi has differentiated from Mario a good bit since the original Smash, their basic move structure is close enough they still kind of feel grouped together when giving any of them a try. I'm only going to want to play one of them in all likelihood and it isn't going to be Luigi. Also Luigi's Mansion is kind of short and dull, and thats the persona they always push on Luigi. Like it or not, hes forever second class Mario. Luckily for Luigi, a more direct and improved clone of Mario already exists in the game.

#38: Zero Suit Samus

Who the hell wants to play as Samus without a suit when Samus is like a billion times cooler in her suit? Oh. The same people that keep making Spyro lose in every contest appearance, that is who. Screw you guys. Everyone knows why Zero Suit Samus is popular and it has absolutely nothing to do with her combat prowess. Nevermind the fact that her moveset is actually kind of unique and interesting, no one is looking at that. On another note, getting stunned by her is absolutely the worst feeling in the word. I'm picturing it on screen and it is absolutely deflating.

Also she is my closest cousins main(Or was, I'm not sure who he'll play now, i think he mentioned maybe moving to Wolf). We've kind of got a friendly rivalry thing going. I can't exactly play his main, that wouldn't be right, and I'd feel inferior. Like, I've never seen him play Lucario, and as such, I'm not sure hes ever seen me play ZSS(Maybe in some random games these have happened, but I cant recall). So my experience actually playing ZSS myself is pretty slim. She is kind of a rival character more than a playable character to my mind.

I adamantly disagree with this take. Also, DK is basically the one heavyweight who isn't slow!

#37: Bayonetta

Full disclosure, Bayonetta was a very late addition to Smash and my time playing with or against her is severely limited. I've also yet to play a Bayonetta game, but they actually look kind of fun. And yeah, Bayonetta kind of breaks Smash. I was playing her at Thanksgiving, probably my first time giving her more than a single game in an outing. There were times where I was like "oh that combo'd." then "oh that combo'd too" and then it was like "oh shit it just keeps going". There is absolutely nothing currently balanced about Bayonetta(Maybe this changes tomorrow?). Its not like the things that were hitting were even all that hard to pull off but she just kept dragging my opponents further. I wasn't the only one playing her to great success that day either. Shes fun to play and has a neat kit, but she wasn't balanced in the slightest. Lack of outside exposure hurts her a bit here as well.

#36: Mewtwo

What is that Mewtwo? You got replaced? By a better character. Yeah, you can stay out for all I care. But honestly I wasn't hurt by them bringing him back, Lucario stole one of his moves and his slot but they were different enough there was plenty of room for both. His specials still feel weak and out of place, and for the strongest Pokemon, doesn't really pack the punch you'd expect. Its kind of a shame he couldn't get a full remake because his initial form just wasn't interesting in the slightest. I was really worried when Mewtwo got revealed first and then real happy when "Everyone is here" was revealed. My biggest wish for Smash was "bring everyone in" simply because, as much as I feast on peoples tears, I still believe this was the best solution to making the most people happy(Even if the trade is less newcomers).

Also double ranking because I almost ranked the next one next but instead changed my mind.

#35: Link

This is where the a list of characters for Smash really differs from a plain old list of red's favorites. Cause Link is fucking awesome. I always vote for Link, theres only a few characters I vote over Link. But in Smash, we have 3 Links and regular old Link is currently not my Link. Not to mention hes being replaced by Breath of the Wild Link. I didn't want BotW Link, I wanted BotW Revali(aka my non-Pokemon dream). For whatever reason Toon Link just feels more natural for me to play than regular Link. Its actually really strange. Again, I like Link a lot, there just isn't room for more than one high on the list. And yeah, I still want them to put Dark Link in the game. And Wolf Link. And probably some other Link's in the game. They can't all go high on the list, but there is still room for more. Just make them not clones, except for Dark Link, you might as well make him a damn echo and put him in the game at this point.

#34: Chrom

Bye Fire Emblem. Being cooler than Marth can only get you so far as a generic swordsman. Chrom is somehow entering in one game too late, as he felt like an obvious addition to the last game and then got snubbed. They seem to have mixed up the fire emblem clone formula with him a little bit, so I'm kind of a bit interested in giving him a go at some point. We are actually starting to run kind of low on characters that primarily use a sword.

The biggest and most obvious difference though, is that Dark Pit is an actual character. Not the same. And theres the fact that Dark Link fights exactly like Link and is kinda the point of him, soooooo yeah he can't have a different moveset or stats.

#33: Mega Man

Probably the most wanted and deserving 3rd party character that got in. Mega Man is full of...Mega Man nostalgia. Unfortunately, with staying true to his form with the buster, he can be kind of awkward as hell to play. I can't quite adjust to that change in playstyle and tend to end games more frustrated than pleased. I'm not exactly the biggest Mega Man fan out there either, despite my acknowledgment of his place in gaming history.

#32: Captain Falcon

Captain Falcon always gets bonus points for basically entirely being a Smash character. I mean, sure he technically comes from F-Zero, but does generic driver guy really count as a character? No, it doesn't. He basically was nothing and his entire personality and attacks come from Smash. Hell, Falcon Punch, everyone knows what a Falcon Punch is. That didn't exist before Smash. Spamming Falcon Punch at someone is the ultimate sign of disrespect, but actually hitting with one is all sorts of satisfying.

I played as Ganondorf during a B8 four player game and constantly tried to hit Warlock Punch. Even when everyone else was busy in their fights, I never landed it once.

#31: Pit

Pit was one of those nostalgia draw characters except unlike some of the worthless inclusions like Ice Climbers, Pit was actually given a bit of a series revival following his Smash introduction. Not sure he'll ever get anything beyond that, and he was still relegated to second-tier 3DS game status, but he got something. Pit is kind of fun to play, but for whatever reason the transition from Brawl to Wii U just made him feel kind of...off. I'm sure the changes are broken down somewhere, but just from memory the changes don't feel insignificant and hes definitely weaker. The hilarious awful inclusion of Dark Pit hurts him indirectly too.

#30: Simon

Simon is a good inclusion and looks interesting. Castlevania is a good series, but far from one of my top favorites. Simon is going to have the most potential to move either up or down on the list, as hes going to be a huge wild card on if I like him or not. Or, he could just be totally usurped by Richter and tank in my mind. Probably give him some casual play at some point.

#29: Squirtle

It'll be interesting to see how playable Squirtle becomes with a second chance, because Pokemon Trainer just didn't work in his original form. I mean, it was a neat idea, but at the end of the day I feel like most people would have preferred being able to just play a single Pokemon instead of being stuck switching all day. Of course, they threw out the entire idea and stuck us with just Charizard, which was honestly just as frustrating. I'm not exactly sure how the trio is going to work now that Pokemon Trainer is making a return. Squirtle is in fact my least favorite Pokemon of the trio.

The stamina mechanic being removed is a god send, I would never in a million years consider touching Pokemon Trainer when it had that gimmick, but now that you can play the Pokemon you want when you want for as long as you want, I'll actually give it a try

The only real downside to the Pokemon Trainer pokemon now is they all lack a Down Special.

On the other hand, you could argue that their Down Special allowing them to become another character entirely makes them the most versatile character of all, collectively.

#28: Inkling

Trolling us with more Splatoon for the Smash reveal was fantastic. I think its become a realistic expectation that every Nintendo Direct or event is going to be overloaded with Splatoon content. I haven't yet played it, but Splatoon is kind of neat conceptually(I actually own 2, but haven't played it yet). The Inkling's were an obvious fit for Smash and I can't help but wonder if, when creating Splatoon, someone was thinking in their back of the mind how to fit them in Smash at the same time. I'm a little upset the silhouette in the initial Smash reveal never got filled out definitively by Nintendo.

#27: Samus

Samus is an awesome character but it feels like every Smash she gets slower and floatier and her attacks gain weird lag time. It becomes a very unsatisfying experience to a character that honestly could kind of use a remake from her original form. I know no one has ever really gotten a true remake, but Samus definitely has a lot of abilities that don't really feel true to her in-game abilities and with better tech than what we had in the original Smash, I think she'd actually be a far more interesting character with an entirely re-imagined moveset.

#26: King K. Rool

Why the hell can we get K. Rool in Smash but not in games with literal "Donkey Kong Country" in the title. The random as fuck enemies in the new DKC games are one of the greatest mysteries in gaming because they honestly have no reason or need to exist. Hopefully, they make a third one, are like "Hey K. Rool is in Smash lets bring him back." and we stop dealing with these dumb tiki things or whatever. Its a real shame because the new DKC games are actually really good(Not quite SNES DKC good, but good). Dixie Kong definitely is at the top or near of my most wanted Smash character, so I'm definitely disappointed on that front, but I understand the need to balance heroes with their villains. K. Rool's set looks kind of ridiculous in a fun way.
