278 songs were nominated by 39 different "board=8" users. these pieces of music were nominated with the intent for me to listen to them and RNAK them...so I have done that now!

note 1: this selection was INSANELY good, WOW. i could tell almost everyone tried to pick stuff that they thought I would like. KEEP THIS IN MIND Because this makes stuff that in a normal selection of random vgm would be like "in the top 30" or whatever literally in the 100s here. On a typical random selection of vgm you'd get on here the threshold for "I like this" would not start anywhere near this far down the list. So Thank You Everyone and don't be sad if you get too low.....even the very lowest ranked stuff I thought was worth my time to listen to!!

note 2: here's the spreadsheet, the 2nd sheet has all the songs that got nominated and the other is the ranking list all in one place as songs get added. might add another sheet for other various random fun stats https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1thrbGtmfZFFz-TGGmFD2xCUTRed-qzGrBBjVsHLFZnE/edit?usp=sharing

note 3: if you are not someone here who knows me already, expect these placements to be strange. my taste in music is known for being pretty weird here so these rankings are pretty far off from anything i expect anyone else to agree with. ALSO my write-ups tend to be overly detailed/technical just because that is how i think. and i tend to just stream of consciousness ramble into nonsense nonseqtuitor zone because i think it is fun. so if you're not already expecting this...expect some insanely long writeups that are basically impossible to read for a lot of this

note 4: F Sharp

note 5: the spreadsheet has TIERS on it shown beforehand. which are just...relative indicators of how much I like it so here is a rundown

MAGENTA TIER: 1-43 - contenders for favorite vgm of all time in some way. like if someone asked me "what are some of your favorite video game songs" I might pick from any of these ones ("9.0 - 9.9" as far as my typical rating scale descriptions go)

PURPLE TIER: 45-112 - I LOVE these, I'd put these on a CD mix or personal playlist or at least would go out of my way to listen to these whenever. ("8.0 - 8.9")

BLUE TIER: 113-189 - I LIKE these. I would not put them on a cd/playlist or go out of my way to listen to them, but if they came on some "video game music" radio or what ever i'd be like "aw yeah cool THAT song" or something. ("7.0 - 7.9")

GREEN TIER: 190-245 - I get some level of enjoyment out of these! I wouldn't say they're songs I particularly like, but I at least get something out of it and think cool stuff happens in them or something ("6.0 - 6.9")

YELLOW TIER: 246-262 - I don't mind listening to them, but I don't get enjoyment out of listening to them either. ("5.0 - 5.9")

ORANGE TIER: 263-274 - I would rather be not be listening to music than listening to these. Dislike enough to always want them to end and to turn them off, but there's still things here and there to redeem them that I do enjoy. ("4.0 - 4.9")

RED TIER: 274-278 - I really dislike listening to these and there's very little redeeming about them. or if there is "something redeeming about them" it doesn't make up for whatever i hate about it anyways ("0.0 - 3.9")

note 6: I probably forgot something I wanted to say first but i'm taking too long so LETS go

Hello welcome to my ranking topic, one of the things I tend to dislike the most in music is when a chord progression is extremely straightforwardly presented....especially if it is like this case where I despise the chord loop in itself. I think i-bVII-bVI-V is one of my least fav chord progressions period, well...really just the bVII-V part happening so bluntly over and over. like i don't mind the MORE "stereotypical" i bVII bVI progression because its so neutral that it registers as like one cool big epic chord vamp world or something and sounds "epic" and "destiny". but as soon as you make bVI-V become a fucking YOUTUBE ("newgrounds") "spooky game" I'lI start to "lose my mind" because there's this constant vector animated stick figure pulling my leg and dragging me across the floor trying to tell me "HEy look it is tense RIGHT NOW but only for LESS THAN ONE SECOND because...SEEE we're going to go back to the start of it. .." like no don't fucking DO that if you're going to do that chord change make it tense...forever....... but yeah that's what i hate about it, despite it being a "surprise" and "tense" it actually is the exact antithesis of tension/surprise because it functions as a transitionary guide that feels so stupid to me because I don't want to know what the next chord change is going to be ever and in a 4 chord progression loop that V chord being right before the i somehow makes it feel more predictable and lame than basic 12 bar blues or "the touhou" or "maria" . i like it when route 113 does it for like 2 seconds once but not when it is every 3 seconds for a whole song.

oh and i guess this is probably obvious but yeah I do not like simple and really clearly laid out things in general, applies to more than just chords, so the fact that the thing that's defining it is even 8th notes just going down the notes really drags this to the bottom instantly for me but even worse is that bassline going back and forth a fifth every other note that makes it sound like an oompah oompah even though this is probably not supposed to actually sound silly, it sounds very silly to me.......

Another gigantic factor this tune has going against it is the production is probably some of my least favorite of anything on this list as well. It's "chiptune sounds" driving the song but they are acting like a very big lizard named Harold Johncrawlnighthornson, they just do not sound like they belong together with themselves even though they are {simple waves that are synths BEEP} so they 'should'. 0:20 has a delay echo on it and I would think that is cool because I LOVE delay echoes, a lot! but this doesn't even sound cool because the delay timing just makes the volume of certain notes get sporadically louder with how muddled together it all is. If the delay was more like panned between speakers or had SOMETHING different other than just volume levels, I'd probably be ok with it, but I think on top of everything I dislike about this that just makes everything sound even more "the fake type of epic that i do not want to hear" genre.

I feel bad that a Shonen_Bat song is in last place because that almost seems too OBVIOUS because we had the lowest VGMC compatibility in terms of voting patterns according to dire's cool chart (http://puu.sh/Cb84O.png / http://puu.sh/Cb85E.png) ...and by a decently far margin too. I'm not sure what it is but we seem to be fundamentally opposite in preferences in SOME way. but I also feel bad because like, I can TELL your noms were actually intended for my taste in music and not any other random given person's, so it feels kind of unfortunate that this jungle gym wound up in the Garbage Dump but I guess that's just the way the music cylinders collide

this is the only song on the entire list that I have 0 positive things to say about in mind. but maybe i can come up with something positive to say such as "I like the art of the character on the album art that is playing a woodwind instrument that looks like a miniature baseball bat and I also like how the drummer seems very unimpressed, maybe it is because the drums on this song are so boring to play..." oh wait that is a negative thing to say. Here is a positive thing to say: I like synthesizer sounds and this has them in it.? also it feels kind of "nostalgic", like...it reminds me of music to flash games that are made by people before they were old enough to drink (like...not just alcohol but i mean old enough to drink water, if you make flash games you're not allowed to drink water until you are 23 i think?!!) that I am nostalgic for and makes me kind of want to relive 2007 learning how to use fl studio for the first time to make music that does not sound like this for imaginary flash games based around the periodic table of elements

Game: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask *Remix
Title: Time's End
Composer: Mike Grier, Theophany
Nominator: Shonen_Bat
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aroBdjZqq7M" data-time="

Uhhh.............sorry Shonen_Bat ;-;

I actually REALLY want to like this one because the concept of "Time's End" is so fucking good (embarrassing secret: I never beat majora's mask but the atmosphere of that game is fucking amazing and this song evokes it )

anyways...this has the same chord progression i complained about in the previous writeup so i will not go on the exact same rant again, but it's low for the exact same reason yeah. In this case the chord changes are about equally obvious and layed out in front of you in really basic way, but it's also far more appealingly used in my opinion. Just more going on, more interesting ways of working around it, etc. This is overall WAAAy more "whoaa" to me and I feel like i'm being sucked inside of the world of this song and actually evokes the effect that I think that sort of progression is intended to evoke on me. a feeling of DREAD...which is a feeling I WANt music to make me feel, so I love that about this. Though I think the "a feeling of dread" is more because of everything else in the song, but i guess it's an archetypally dark evil "the world ended" progression so it's one that allows that to work...

I still REALLY do not like this or the presence of that chord progression though, it's too simple for me in presentation, despite the ITS A BIG SONG fullness intensity. and it still comes off as waay too cheesy to me, but I at least appreciate the DARKNESS because I like DARK things.

At 7:32 though this does one of the most }it gives me chills{ e ffective things of any song on the list though, and I almost put this higher because of that (in earlier iterations of this list this was actually not quite this low, solely because of that). everything reversing with this clustery tense choir is so good and I love it honestly. makes me wish this same concept and atmosphere were applied to something i liked compositionally just a bit more because if so it'd have the potential to be in one of the really high tiers. in the form this is in though i can't rate it any higher than this...the aspects i dislike take up too much of the song aHHH That clock ticking is so chilling (emit) i can play a horn thing to make time go backwards but only when my head is made out of wood

definitely one of the songs on the list I feel the most bad about having to rate this low, just because i love it in concept and it's effective at emotion evocation to me. i just can't get over how much i hate the scaffolding that makes this up being too cubic and glaring to let me appreciate the potential beauty beneath it

oh also i know this is not a "remix" and is really just an original but it's on a remix album and not in game so i might as well title it this way.

Title: Thank Fuck You Stood on My Heart
Composer: Jack King-Spooner
Nominator: Simoun
https://jackking-spooner.bandcamp.com/track/thank-fuck-you-stood-on-my-heart

uhhh, ANOTHER song with a slow looping chord progression that's laid out to you really plainly before the song even stars. notice a pattern here? and it's not just that, like the previous two it ALSO is a song with a chord loop that ends on a V chord before going back to i and I just hate the sound of that sort of overt harmonic minor progression so much, at least when it's used in this simple of a way. I've always known i disliked it (in particular, noticing my aversion to it more than usual this past year or so) but these nominations all being in this ranking definitely solidified my reaction to it.

This song actually does A LOT of extremely interesting things, but like Time's End I have a lot of problem appreciating them over the bluntness of the structure's simplicity.

but... the things I like here? well A LOT actually okay

1) I like the vocals, they are a really interesting weird contrast for something styled like this. the rapping and singing from different people just makes it fun and varied. for some reason i am imagining that all of them are splatoon characters that are standing on top of very tall uncanny valley 90s computer animated mushrooms while they are singing and i do not know why I imagine that but this makes it really funny

2) the rawness of this is actually kind of fun to me. it's "bad audio production" but that actually makes it kind of interesting sounding in this case, the weird phase/flange filters on the obviously fake drums, strange use of stereo separation, etc

3) probably the obvious reason this was nominated or something, the song basically destroying itself at 3:30 and turning into STAtic. but with hints of the song existing still for the next 2 minutes. I think that's AWESOME honestly.

4) similarly all the random noise sounds at 1:28 i like those for sure

this is the same feeling i had about time's end. really simple chord progressions that dominate too much of the song are just really not my thing, but I want to like it because it does a bunch interesting weird things, i just wish it was doing those interesting weird things on top of some other song where i didn't hate the raw composition so much.

I like the atmosphere of the song a lot less overall than time's end but this does so many more different interesting things in my opinion (and the weird "wtf it's not playing music anymore..." parts are longer and i like those a lot so this ranks higher on merit of that)

Snake is kind of infamous for always winding up at the bottom of everyone's lists, and I was kind of hoping that this ranking thread could actually be a time he'd do well...since I'm actually a big fan of all the "random horror ambience and stuff" style stuff that he regularly nominates (the exact tracks that wind up at the bottom of most ranking lists he participates in would do fairly well in a me list usually...you'll see how the rest of his fare soon!) and I am probably one of the only other people in the vgm subcommunity here who actually actively likes that kind of stuff!.............!.....................................but then he nominated THIS song. a POPULAR normal video game song that happens to be one of my least favorites. Pretty consistently every year this was in a contest I'd describe it as among my least favorite entrants.

it's probably not surprising why based on my writeups for 278-276. exact same problem for me, though the chord progression here comes across as a lot less cheesy to me (even if it's actually more simple and boring) so that's pretty much the only reason why this is above those. but it's still just...almost entirely quarter notes arpeggiating a really basic 4 chord loop and layers slowly getting added on. that's something i actively dislike the sound of because it sounds like kindergarten teacher teaching me how to count even though I already know how to use calculus to create force fields with my mouth and so then i throw a chair at the kindergarten teacher and say "you were too low level for me" and then I go to jail and get beaten up for being too good at calculus and not good enough at "music theory anime" but if I sing This is the Police 2 - Step Aside by Ben Matthews really well then the police will think i am cool enough to let me not be in jail anymore because I sang a song about police and they will forgive me for my writeup for Menu Theme (World's Scariest Police Chases) where I said "Menu Theme...police are stupid and should all go to jail."

what I do like about this song is that it has a part where the voice abruptly goes "eeeeeeee" at 1:27 and it is very unexpected and slightly funny (though i mostly just like how it feels like it comes out of nowhere) and reminds me of a piece of music I have always liked called "Evolution" by "Mythos" (here's a clue for how to listen to it: type "Uu9mSI7qzUs" after "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=" and at 2:38 there's a similarly startling singer sound in an otherwise laid back piece of music) but evolution by mythos is like...purple or maybe even magenta zone tier song even if it is not a video game song, while assassin's creed 2 ezio's family is on the opposite side of the spectrum for me obvously...

I don't really mind the BIG SERIOUS dramatic tone of this at all, big guitar going "druun" for 2 notes and stuff is kind of emotionally heart punching anD impactful. I just, as with the previous 3 songs I ranked this low, can't really appreciate most of the things I'd otherwise like here because it's laid out way too conveniently in a way that basically just feels patronizing to me, even though it's a fucking assassin's creed song (that game has the word assassin in it! that's VIOLENT) my brain equates it to preschool kids learning to play a few of the notes on a toy glockenspiel and so i can not take it seriously anymore

Title: Forest Light Theme
Composer: Brent "brentalfloss" Black
Nominator: azuarc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uag8muABj3g" data-time="

This is the most out of place song in the RED ZONE with the rest of the others in it and i'm not sure most people would expect me to rate it this low. (other than maybe because of the fact that this is azuarc's nom and according to dire's vgmc12 stats chart i'm the least compatible with azu and azu's the 5th least compatible with me)

ok so here is the thing. if someone asked me what my favorite genre of music was, like, only including really basic broad genres like "rock" "electronic" "hip hop" "country" "classical" or "political talk radio" or whatever......my answer would be "JAZZ". BUT ...it is also one of the genres i am the most picky about because so much of my life revolved around it for a long time (was a piano/vibes guy in jazz bands for waaay too long and as sort of the activity that consumed the most of my time for about a decade). So i'm hyperaware of anything to do with jazz and even when something is not jazz but has elements of it i will compare it to jazz and complain about how it sounds too much like "the bad type of jazz"

to me this is not even really 'jazz' because it does not even have 7th chords wtf. you can't play a trombone like that unless you also have a cool piano doing big 7ths and random extensions . . > : (

really it's just supposed to sound like the side of donkey kong country music that I do not actually like (according to the composer on his youtube video that is not this youtube video), and I guess it kind of sounds like that, but it's waaaay more empty than even that so it's not successful to me, even if I liked that side of dkc music I would think this is disappointing in comparison

this song just feels like it's stripped down to exactly all of the elements in a "adjacent to jazz" song that i do not actually like

my least favorite part is the relentlessly using a blues scale on almost everything in the most basic way to the point that it sounds like an exercise in 7th grade jazz band to teach you what a blues scale is but even though it is 7th grade they forgot to teach you what a 7th chord is

oh and when it finally escapes the corny going up the blues scale to the tritone and back to the root over and over again thing FINALLy at :37.. it actually is the most predictable sequence of "slightly more interesting chords" ever and it's just like fuck that bring me back the cheesy blues scale bullshit with nothing else happening i don't care this song is I DONT LIKE IT

also really dislike all the wobblies to empahzies emphasize a note when it becomes a big note

My favorite thing about this is probably that it reminds me of "Canopy Heights normal floor" from Zapper: One Wicked Cricket, which is in a pretty similar style except that i actually like it.

My other favorite thing about this is: Also I like marimbas/xylophones...though this is a really relentlessly cheesy use of them to me at a lot of parts...but the parts that I do not perceive as "cheesy" are the parts where i'm like "fuck Yeah Mallet Perc Represent" (not that special of mallet perc use but i am grasping for staws here for something to like...)

Think i've said more negative about this one than everything I ranked lower than it but the main reason it's this high is because it's FUN and i find it less tedious to listen to than the more repetitive/gridded entries below this...even if this is still really "gridded" and safe for something that is pretending to be loose swing/jazz (though i'm mostly just really turned off by anything that feels trapped in hexatonic blues scales, especially when they're as unexpressive feeling as this feels to me)

I actually thought you might like Time's End. That's a bit unfortunate because I like it quite a bit. Definitely agree on the thing you say first about the atmosphere of the game itself though.

I also have varying opinions on different types of jazz music, but I expect we'd have near opposite opinions. I don't have the technical knowledge to describe this precisely, but the type of jazz I don't like is what I would describe as experimental or freeform jazz, in which it's a soloist doing whatever they feel like for 15 minutes at a time, which is the type I might expect you to like. (Jazz enthusiasts will swear that I'm being reductive in this description, but I really just don't see it.) And then we have the Forest Light Theme, which is on the near opposite side of the spectrum...and I also don't like it. So we can agree on that. I also don't often like this type of jazz song that is entirely based around variations on a single melody/chord progression. (There are probably exceptions, admittedly, but this isn't one.)

Anyway, the type of jazz I do like is, I guess, somewhere in between? I don't really know how to sum it up in a word, but basically I like more big band style jazz that remains somewhat grounded with a clear idea in place, but still has enough variation in instrumentation and style to not come off as monotonous.

Title: Thank Fuck You Stood on My Heart
Composer: Jack King-Spooner

I knew it. I mean, not that it would rank this low but that this wasn't going to get that far. I was considering between this and any one of the better songs in that album (seriously check it out if you haven't yet) because this was just so hilariously bad not to share at all.

And actually I always thought the static at the end was the bonus. I mainly nommed it for the first 2 reasons you stated.

No idea where my tracks are going to fall, I have decent confidence in the Kirby bebop tunes but not much else.

{Mycro Does not Like music that sounds too 'simple' Episode 6}

I love Amiga MODs as a format, and tracker music in general]]]]]that is the only thing that saves this from being in the RED ZONE. with most other instrumentation i'd all around hate it I think. unabashedly 90s feeling samples with blunt cutoffs and fun hyperfast chip arp chords are cool enough to just barely save this.

the bassline feels really E"MBARRAS"ING", the every two notes it jumps up and down an octave thing I don't like but it's whatever, what I hate more is the specific set of notes it's based around. like just ONLy the pentatonic scale notes|it's painfully stereotypical 'my first song that i wrote' note choices. It gets even more basic later just going back and forth between D and C as the progression later, but at least that has more "nostalgia for dramatic hero song in old video games" implications so i actually like that part more even if it's simpler, I guess it's SO simple that the simplicity becomes less blatant than when it's DDFGDDAC

but i think even worse to me is the melody...it just feels like....WAAY too slow and unsyncopated at parts in this way that highlights just how much of a mundane grid this sounds like. hate that fucking defdefef (notes) line the melody starts with especially. though i like the part of the melody after the bass changes to C more that part is actually cool.......though ugh that rhythm on the syn brass part at :51 is even more dumb sounding to me.

I downloaded the actual .mod file this was taken from to look at it in a tracker, and it's written at a speed where at a tempo of 125 each row is a 32nd note beat...so why did this not use them more?!!? Like yeah I can hear where the 32nd note parts are (and those are my favorite moments of the whole thing basically, especially in the melody) but it almost feels like a waste when almost everything is quantized to EIGHTHS (not even 16ths) rhythmically.

That said, I do like how "80s" (90s) the mechanical snare on 2 and 4 feels as BASIC as that is, i like THAT sound, just not how the rhythms of the melody/everything else follow along and feel way too ...I guess the same way I felt about a lot of the lower ranked stuff, just really "patronizing" like someone is trying really hard to make sure i do not miss anything in the song.

the image it puts in my head of [kindergartners learning how to play notes on a glockenspiel (one that only has notes in a pentatonic scale on it) that just happens to make sampled analog synth sounds when you hit them] is a slightly less unfitting image than it is for Ezio's family, but still prevents me from being able to be impacted by anything vaguely cool I think it does with much effectiveness.

I think I'm going to run out of metaphors that actually make sense for these low ultra-obvious-structure songs that i haven't said already but "this song sounds like a kid made a robot costume out of a cardboard box on Halloween but it wasn't actually supposed to be a robot costume it was supposed to be a car costume but he did not know how to make it look like a car but there were some slightly cool things about the costume that made it stand out over the other cardboard box robot costumes"

yeah I found out that info on the wiki http://needformadness.wikia.com/wiki/Ability (well the original composer I only found from reading the info in the mod file itself), most of the music has info available on it there!

I hear this song at ~60 bpm. My guess is that the composer wanted to occasionally use 64th notes, and the tracker didn't support 16 subdivisions, so they doubled the tempo internally to get that kind of granularity.

I don't think almost anyone would count those as "64th notes" lol, i mean it's subjective but it'd be really busy looking and hard to read on sheet music for most people that slow.....................I DID just notice that the tempo listed in the thing i'm viewing it in means absolutely nothing lmao and i just typed it without thinking about how wrong it obviously was (it says every single mod file is 125bpm hahha), yeah the bpm is like 95 i'm stupid oops.

Anyways, doing what you described in a tracker is really normal (some stuff is at superfast speeds to get even more subtle divisions in, though delay commands so notes can happen off of the grid exist for a reason too), I 'm just annoyed at how so many of the rhythms in this are just a bunch of /8th/ notes in a row at this slow a tempo a lot of the time. The occasional 32nd thing doesn't happen as much as it should imo and this would benefit from more of that subtlety, otherwise it just feels unbearably rudimentary to me. that's all i was really trying to say

Title: Lash's Theme
Composer: Yoshito Hirano
Nominator: hombad46

Yoshito Hirano is responsible for a big chunk of my favorite VGM (one of the composers for Paper Mario Thousand Year Door which is one of my all time favorite vgm osts ever) and...you can kind of tell this is the same person but man this song is the definition of a ton of my least favorite stuff.

My main problem with this is (like many of these low entries) the chord changes, simple chord changes on a tune that's already really empty in the first place just kind of implies to me that it's the focus and when the changes don't do anything interesting it feels like it's calling a bunch of attention to this thing in the song that does not even exist, like saying LOOK THE SKY IS DOING SOMETHINg.......its BLUE!!!. THIS Time it's blues progression I-V-IV stuff is what's going on, which actually hasn't shown up yet until now even though I'd normally like it the least of out of all the chord progressions in any song to show up so far i think ,,,,,a nd the melody is STUPID BITCH it is even more 'too on the beat for me' than the need for madness one, but in this context it's more like 50S DINER except all of the roundedness of everyone's slick hair has turned into voxel cubes. just way too obvious what is going to happen next and i do not like that

The thing that brings this one UP is I love the cool weird sounds going "were a ee werr ehh eeh ghhhg eew euqq qwwq qwe", I like the instrumentation of this in general, grainy-ish sample-based stuff is fun! and these are cool weird ish samples so yeah I like it.

:37 - :51 is also super weird, especially starting at :44 with the psg sound and weird pingy sound being harmonized in 4ths (well actually not even 4ths but up an octave from that so open 11ths!) apart from each other. The delayed panning between the speakers on the one sound is fun, and the pew pewpewpew laser sounds in the percussion are really welcomed by me too

pretty much the same category as the last one "hate it compositionally but i love the sound/format enough to boost it this high" and that one weird harmonized 11ths part is really really really good to me and mak/I SURE JUST LOVE TO GO TO THE LENS FLARE MEETUPS WITH HAPPY MARIO LUIGI/es up for a lot of my qualms here

yeah there is, i'm just running these through a thing that shows the tempo info designed for it/xm/etc rather than mod, so if you put a mod in it just always says 125 no matter what, it's disabled and unrelated to the file
