Serves them right for selling opened games as new, shitty stickers, and I still remember that scummy move they made to remove Deus Ex codes. They deserve to go under.
With Amazon and Best Buy who the hell needs them anyway?

selling opened games as new

I can still remember the time I bought Tales of Berseria for forty American dollars. They took it out of another case, put it in the original case, and was so annoyed at them for expecting me to pay full MSRP price that much money for a game that has been clearly used, I decided that from then on, I would never buy a new game from them again.

Yeah, that shit was outrageous. Then they use that sticker which ruins the original case.

People for whom they are the only remaining option outside of chain stores that sell the system and the 20 most popular games only. EB bought out the other gaming store competition here, and them falling would leave a grand total of nowhere to pre order other than online import stores. Not everyone is in the states, and they aren't just US based.

same...if they went under the only place I'd be able to get video games at offline would be walmart and they only carry the most mainstream popular stuff

I know gamestop gets alot of hate, and I understand some of it, but this is going to affect a ton of people, in a negative way. Tons of employees who are currently working at game stores....won't be. I know there are some at least that are quite cool and really love video games and gamers.

I have lived through the evolution of video games, all of it. I was there when the first mom and pop stores first opened, heck, I put out flyers on cars for them. I get that gamestop is not perfect, but it's a part of gaming history, and I would argue over all it has been a good part of it.

You all might not remember the old days, when gamestop had tournaments, dance dance revolution competions, guitar hero etc. They had parties when games would be released often at midnight. For many, many years many gamestops were run by really cool people who just loved talking about games.

I admit, that many are not like that, in fact I have not used gamestop much in over 5 years specifically because of this. I have told friends who work for gamestop that they really need to bring that back, to get customer loyalty back, as there just is not enough incentive to purchase from gamestop, often at a higher price, then from places like amazon, best buy, or just buying digital. That isn't even taking steam into account and their huge sales.

Honestly, if they had done EVERYTHING right (and I admit they have not), I still think it would be a lost cause. It's just so much easier, for me at least, to play a game on my PC then on a system. Laptops are strong enough to play the best games, and are portable, and can be hooked up to any 4k TV wherever you do, and have better graphics then a console at this point. That leaves console exclusives as your primary reason to even bother with a console, and even there, digital is generally easier (no switching game discs), and with an extrenal drive (not to mention the 1 tera drive from the pro) you can store a ton on your system.

I will be sad to see gamestop go, but having not supported it much in the last 5 years or so, I can not complain, as it's partially my fault. I could have fought for the store, I could have gone in and told them what they needed to do, or even tried to set up some kinda community gamers organization that revolved around it. I do think it will be sad when there is no more game centered stores, but I also think it is sadly destined to happen.

Honestly you don't even need Amazon or Best buys deals (both were 20% before, but are now gone), in order to generally save more money, if you just wait to buy digital. The digital stores have been having pretty drastic sales on quite a few games not long after they are released (and thats for exclusives). Look at assassins creed Odyssy for instance. I am getting it delivered to me for free, for $27 total. It's like......3 months? After it was released...not exactly sure how many but less then 6 for sure. That is less then half the price if I had bought it on release from gamestop etc. I believe the digital version was $30 on psn, and it was the same price on green man gaming. I had amazon credit so I got the ps4 version but honestly I probably should have just spent the extra for the PC version since it's easier to play.

What is really killing gamestop?

The simple fact that by the time they are giving any kind of actual discount on used games at all (and not selling it for $5 less then full retail) there is almost always a sale on the new game that is cheaper then the used versions at gamestop.

What is more, if the game is available on steam (and more and more of them are), you know for a fact if you wait you'll get it for at least 50% off, the question is just will you wait for a 75% sale (which can take a few years) or not.

Honestly i believe it's mostly a response to used game sales, since the game creators were loosing money big time on it, and they realized it. This way they get a large majority of the profits, but......gamestop has banked on used sales for a long time and without them, they are in serious trouble.

I wish the gaming community and specifically the companies making and producing the games would "rescue" gamestop in some way, but allowing them to actual make a profit on new sales, but it's not likely to happen. The only way to really do that is to charge less for games sold at gamestop (so gamestop can make a profit), and that is never going to happen.

Sure they do. Most of the time it is only to stop illegal copies of games from being played, though I know Ubisoft added constantly active call in DRM to Child of Light, breaking the game on PS3 unless you disabled your internet connection, since otherwise it can't keep up and issues keep popping up. -_-

Mercenaries 2 is the same, it tries to contact a now dead server if you are online, and will fail to start the game. But at least they didn't do constant checks, so it wasn't bogging down the system with bullshit when the server existed.

I don't think I've ever had a problem with discs not working buying used online, but, I've had plenty of defective discs buying used in store. I've been buying used games since the early 2000s.
Ebay/Amazon sellers don't want to ruin their seller feedback by selling defective games. People who trade them in stores on the other hand, probably just want to make a quick buck and they don't even face any consequences for trading defective shit.
I only use Amazon now for used games and I have never had a problem. The discs generally look better and there are no stickers on the cases either.

They ain't bad if it's used games you want. Selling to them is where you get fucked but there will always be people either stupid enough or in need of money now bad enough to sell to them.

My Walmart sells used games now too but they still lack more obscure titles and have no sense of organization. It's like a treasure hunt. They aren't even separated by console.

Why would any rational person choose BB over GS? Bleh.

It's not the only shop I go to but I have 3 GS's in the area and one is my closest retailer of gaming. A little wrapper doesn't mean anything to me, new or used it's all about the condition of the game and case. I mean we're going to open it eventually right?

If I had to suggest anything I'd prefer a slightly bigger store, a few less collectibles and more focus on retro gaming (which only works if people sell their games there), and price matching. Like was said it's the only place to get less mainstream games.

I see half price on digital much more often than I see half price on discs.

Depends. Steam is always having sales. But thats steam. For console online stores, hey sometimes have stuff cheaper. But if you go to the right stores, you can find really good deals. I know that mostly because of my mom who is always looking for a good deal to help us spend less.

Xbox Live has sales several times a year, like Steam. Usually a summer sale, a winter sale, a Black Friday sale, and maybe one or two others.

I only ever buy my games when there is a digital sale, and I have never once paid full price for a digital game.

The biggest con for me about physical games is storage space in my apartment. I don't have a lot of room to store things.

The only real reason that I see to own a physical disc is just if you are a collector who absolutely has to own a disc. I used to have that collector mentality too, and I once thought I would never buy digital. Yet as I have gotten older, the whole collector mentality has mattered to me less and less, and I have now gone full digital. I just really don't care about collecting things like I once did in my youth.

Gamestop is not that bad if you are careful with what you buy from them. You can stop yourself from getting "newsed" (last copy display case games) games if you simply refuse to buy them. Of course that only applies for you as it seems that most game buyers going to GS have no issue with such things.

As for me I'm more of a clearance game buyer and always have been. I can count on one hand the number of titles I've bought at launch in these past two gens. Everything else has been clearance or otherwise low price buys from Walmart, Kmart, Sears, Target, Toys R Us, Gamestop and a bunch of Amazon Warehouse Deals pre-owned stuff. Couple those with the former Gamer's Club Unlocked coupons from Best Buy's now defunct program and that was at one point another good place to grab cheap stuff.

There's far, far too many deal sites out there that you can check on to find deals on these things to ever end up paying full price or putting up with the policies of companies which have NO reason to change them due to so many of their customers just not giving a damn how their products they buy look.

I'm not loyal to any company or brand, especially the Cult Of Houser(GTA games) or Sony(PS3/PS4/etc). Defending corporations is absurd.

With Amazon and Best Buy who the hell needs them anyway?

Amazon is steadily cutting incentive to buy games and charging more for Prime, and Best Buy did away with Gamer's Club Unlocked entirely. Gamestop is a great place to get used and older games (they're often missing the real case, but nowadays games very rarely come with any extras).

I got PS4 Borderlands Handsome collection there for around $10. They may suck but that's a great deal for what it is.
