"Donnie Darko is my favorite movie of all time. Comparing it to other sci-fi films ultimately isn't even fair, because I have such a pre-existing love for this film and have ever since first seeing it as a teenager. It cemented Jake Gyllenhaal as one of my favorite actors and it gave me Maggie Gyllenhaal (who ended up being my celeb crush for most of my life) at her most adorable. The soundtrack is incredible, the blur between sci-fi and magic realism is entralling, and the whole thing is beautifully shot. I quote lines from it (probably too many lines, to be completely honest) regularly in my daily life. I have told multiple family members that I doubt their commitment to sparkle motion. This movie has alone had more of an impact on my love for cinema than about half of the rest of the movies I've watched combined. " ~Johnbobb

"Donnie Darko is a movie I'd always heard of and wanted to watch, but never had the excuse to go seek it out, so scarlet I thank you for giving me that motivation. I truly enjoyed it. I feel like Donnie is a character made to appeal to teenagers and outcasts and he resonated with me- or how I imagined myself to once be- really well. I don't really get the time travel aspects, but luckily that wasn't the main focus anyway." ~Genny

"I have a feeling this movie will have extremely varied scores and probably a large gap between the outliers. It's probably not a surprise I have this one pretty high; it even sat at #1 for some time until I had watched some of the later films we chose and I did a little readjusting. Donnie is a very demented lead and clearly he leads a very disturbed existence, one of which there has to be a medical name for I imagine. The revelation of who Frank is, why he appears to Donnie and what actually ends up happening to all of them feels unique even though it's not something that hasn't been done before. The mood and tone of this film is just to my liking, and not to mention Mad World's cover at the end being a top tier theme song on this list." ~charon

"Straddling the line between horror and sci-fi, Donnie Darko is not just an interesting sci-fi time loop concept, but also a deep exploration of the pathos surrounding a troubled teenagers life. Even if you take the time travel out of the equation, the film still works as a frightening look into the mind of Donnie Darko, with his mysterious bunny friend Frank guiding him along on a dark path. Donnie Darko set a new standard for the genre that remains as eerie and haunting as the day it was released." ~Snake

"What It Is: A rabbit attempts to make sure an air delivery goes wrong.

Why It Matters: Donnie Darko has become an absolute cult classic for a generation of moviegoers and it rates extremely well all over the internet, from IMDb to Rotten Tomatoes.

What I Think: The intimacy of this movie is what makes it stand out for me. When you look at my top ten, you can see that so many of the movies are about intimate concepts playing out in bizarre, science fiction fashion. The stakes of this movie seem staggering when, in reality, the playing field is just a small, unassuming community. In a lot of ways, it's a Twin Peaks-style story. There's a magic to everyday life, a hidden spark of imagination underneath mundane humanity. For me, this story and its philosophical ruminations on death, time, fate and Jakie G's creepy eyes, and it hits with impact because it doesn't try to rewrite the entirety of humanity. It remains anchored in an emotionally close proximity to the viewer. And that makes all of the difference between a big, bold movie where I can't find any emotional resonance with the characters (Interstellar) and Donnie Darko. Also I will be amazed if this isn't charon's #1." ~scarlet

"For the first half of this movie, I actually wasnt a huge fan. It seemed unnecessarily weird with the bizarre liquid tubes flowing from peoples chests and whatnot. BUT then the second half and especially the ending rolled around, and it really the tied the film together. This was a quantum time travel mindfuck of a movie, and I loved it. For starters, as weird as the PLOT was, I appreciate how diverse and interesting the cast felt as a whole. Donnie himself was a weird mixture of slacker and heroic genius all in one. His parents were likable characters, and his teachers ranged from likable underdogs (Drew Barrymore) to holy shit why are you such a bitch (you know exactly who Im fucking talking about.) So yeah, LOVED the casting.

But once you get to the meat of the time travel plotline, this movie gets REALLY interesting. Because you spend the entire movie building up this month-long plot of Donnie just going through his everyday life with a few interludes by Frank the Rabbit. Sure, he has a jet engine crash through his room, he floods the school, and he burns down Patrick Swayzes house. But his life is still relatively unphased. However, its important to note that pretty much everyone else in the cast has their life ruined in one way or another over the course of that month. Barrymore loses her job after the school flooding is linked to a box she assigned to her class. Gretchen gets run over and killed by a car, and Frank (not quite a rabbit) gets shot in the face for his troubles. Donnies mother/sister die in a plane crash because of his time travel shenanigans. So whats the only option to prevent all of this tragedy? Donnie reverts to his past and allows himself to die in the jet engine crash. Its like a smarter, better-acted version of Ashton Kutchers Butterfly Effect, and those sorts of time travel shenanigans always intrigue me." ~Inviso

"Not everything in fiction needs an origin story, or even a clear reason for being. This is the idea at the heart of the theatrical cut of Donnie Darko. An unsettling, weird impressionistic painting of a film, this cult classic (like a lot of the stuff that's high on my list) is a triumph of atmospheric strangeness. I've heard the director's cut sort of undercuts the ambiguity by explaining exactly what's going on, which is a shame that kind of thing is a pet peeve of mine. Regardless, though, this movie has held a special place in my heart for years. The Darko clan are cast just right, with actors who clearly understand the tone of the material and know how to handle it. The look of the film is also fantastic, lending the proceedings a fittingly bizarre and creepy vibe. Every time I revisit this I end up coming away with a slightly different impression of it, thanks to the lack of concrete answers about the plot. I do get why this movie isn't for everybody, but it turns out to be my favorite flavor of pretension. " ~KBM

"Ive never seen anything quite like this before. Its kind of like a Breakfast Club type of movie with a supernatural twist to it. Everything is very mysterious about it and it makes the viewer question everything they are watching. I was prepared for a lame it was all a dream ending. I was also prepared for Donnie dreaming about all of this from a psych ward bed. But I was not prepared for what we actually got. Wowwhat a ride. It was kind of a letdown after we saw what he life could have been, but it was also strangely acceptable because Donnie himself was at peace with it. The Mad World cover was perfectly timed at the end to really drive home the various emotions felt.

Oh and a brief soapbox moment, but I actually really liked the sequel, S. Darko, as well. I know that one gets a lot of hate, but it was done right. The actress that played Donnies little sister was brought back and it was just as wild of a ride as this movie was. I recommend giving it a chance if you havent already!

Traviss Opinion: I would really rather Travis not tell me to go suck a fuck. So uhhe skipped this one. " ~Stifled

"The story of an ordinary teenage boy who has his bedroom crushed by a jet engine and is haunted by the ghost of a furry convention attendee. Okay so maybe he isnt very ordinary after all.
So Donnie seems to be the centerpoint of a space-time anomaly that is causing all the strange happenings, but it isnt really explained very well. Or explained at all actually.
Indeed, too often it feels like the 'Lost' model of a writer snickering behind a curtain as he taunts the audience with mysteries that are never answered.
The director did eventually explain what the hell is going on much later, but seriously if a movie requires the reading of supplemental material just to understand the basic plot it is probably not the best film in the world." ~Karo

"I had no idea this was a sci-fi movie before I saw it being part of the list. This was a movie I found more interesting than how much I liked it. Im not a big fan of the edgy script but the movie does a great job of worldbuilding. I liked seeing all the different characters show up in the background, despite not exactly being the most important characters. I watched the directors cut and it felt too long. Maybe my opinion would have been different had I watched the theatrical version. The sci-fi elements are shown in an interesting way and I liked seeing it mess with Donnies already messed up mind. I can see the appeal of this movie even though Im not the biggest fan of it." ~JONA

"Its so human it ends up a creepy movie. We sit through this schizophrenic movie wondering how the protag is going to end up, if hes going to kill himself or what. And through it, I get sick of some of the subjects getting thrown around, all the teenage hormones and another movie that promotes underage drinking. The language bothered me after a while but died down and what was left was still the psychedelic mess of a protagonist seeing Frank. It has its interesting conversations, but things like the agnostic conversation is one Id rather have in a better movie. And really, the song at the end is especially fitting, but did we really need And I find it kind of funny as a line while were looking at his family crying?" ~Wickle

"Alex Garland is EASILY the most promising upcoming director out right now, and I can't wait to see what he does next. Between this and Annihilation, there are few sci-fi directors who can even come close to his level of both creativity and execution. Ex Machina is on a pleasantly small scale, allowing it to cover just what is necessary for a successful AI movie with no excess. By limiting it to just 4 characters the film can really dive deep into the four go-to character tropes of the subgenre: the AI, the prototype, the creator and the outsider. We know just the bare minimum we need to about each of them, allowing us to see them each come into their own without prior bias. That's just touching the surface of what makes Ex Machina incredible. Toss in incredible performances, cinematography, writing and visual effects. The film is sleek and smart and everything I wanted from it." ~Johnbobb

"A young man goes to a secluded lab owned by a reclusive billionaire who has perfected AI in the form of a beautiful female robot. The film is an entrancing ride as the kid has conversations with Eva as sort of a Turing Test, and eventually falls in love with her.
There is great interaction between both male leads, and never gets old seeing them bounce dialogue off each other. The situation gets more and more horrifying as the realization slowly dawns on both the protagonist and the audience that Nathan is a egomaniacal lunatic who is building his own little kingdom of robot sex toys.
It is a stellar movie that really makes you think about the ethics (and dangers) of creating artificial intelligence." ~Karo

"There have been a lot of exciting directorial debuts in the film industry over the last 5-10 years, but perhaps none have been so promising as Alex Garland's incredible Ex Machina. It's a deep, beautiful, and truly eerie film with brilliant performances from its entire cast. Much like most of my top ten, this is a master work of tone, in which lots of different themes are explored without the movie ever feeling like it's trying to take on too much at once. The Oscar-winning effects are seamless to the modern eye, and the script is obviously the product of a lot of meticulous thought and care. Alicia Vikander and Domhnall Gleeson have great chemistry, and Oscar Isaac's weird, unhinged billionaire here is a far cry from Poe Dameron. I consider this a must-watch for any fan of the genre, and a modern classic that will hopefully stand the test of time." ~KBM

"MIND GAMES the movie. I really like how diverse the cast is when it comes to their ideals and intentions and how they bounce off each other. The isolated environment also works well with showing off the desperation of some characters. The movie also did a good job of showing the uncanny valley when it came to the robots. I did like the movies sense of moral ambiguity with your feelings on characters being based on how you treat the robots, although I think they could have done a better job with Nathan, as entertaining as he is. That dance scene was great." ~JONA [Editor's Note: I lolled at the beginning]

"The most satisfying and realistic exploration of artificial intelligence in sci-fi history. Alica Vikanders Ava can often feel like shes performing a turing test on you, it is really that convincing! I also really like the setting, which gets you nice and intimate with the characters, and I love how the ending turns into a horror film with interesting consquences given to you to think on as the credits roll." ~Snake

"One thing Id love to point out with this movie, is with moral compasses and analytics you can actually side with, or side against all three major characters here, and I find the movie well written for that fact. The movie plays out Nathan as the bad guy on the surface, but this is not a human life. I could go on explaining each side, or I can give the people reading my write-up a chance to think of those arguments themselves. The soundtrack was pretty good, thriller-ish without really delving too creepily, which worked in setting the mood for the movie. I did have to stop watching the movie during the scene where Caleb starting cutting himself with the razor though, ugh. I also do want to make a throwback to how I dont like how this is rated R because of nudity, if we didnt have the nudity, itd be PG-13, it was unnecessary." ~Wickle

"What It Is: The best Animal Man story ever told.

Why It Matters: Critically acclaimed, well-received, etc. You know the drill.

What I Think: Hey guys, we have some actual films on a list with some heft and weight! I get to actually talk about how, despite being wonderfully directed, performed, written, etc., I can vehemently disagree with some of the conclusions a film draws. And that's a great feeling. This idea that artificial intelligence would have such simple goals and attempt to achieve them in ways that are so utterly human to me is the wrong direction of AI. Science fiction at its best attempts to explore the issues of tomorrow today or the issues of today tomorrow. So the objectivism of the men in this film for their material possessions and the condescension they have for said objects is quite interesting and definitely a striking, frightening representation of very really social issues. And for the part of science fiction that is exploring the issues of today tomorrow, the film nails it. But outside of fundamentals, I think this consistent fear we have in being manipulated and outsmarted by our inhuman brethren, or the creation toppling the creator, is such a small-minded worry. The meat of the movie is completely antagonistic and quite honestly, in the programming, in the design of intelligence, compassion will always win out in a moral machine. So I really disagree that there is logic in this conclusion. A being that wants to experience the world? I don't believe it. You can't design a human. You can only design a mind that will become its own eventually. And the complete acceptance by the script and the film itself to believe that all minds are created equal is just wrong. So I bump on how the commodification of sexuality (well done) turns into functional xenophobia. To me, EDI and Data are better examples of how the development of intelligence and artificial humanity would play out. But, I respect the attention to detail and the strong argument made in this dissertation on the idea of the mind and especially the study on the Turing Test. Really cool stuff. And way more interesting to think about than fucking Braincation mindwiper movies." ~scarlet

"In a rare turn of events, Poe was outsmarted by General Hux. But along the way to that conclusion, we were treated to a well crafted mindjob where we were practically trained to not trust one character when the innocent damsel in distress was cold blooded all along. It was a swerve we should have seen coming, but just couldnt. Not to mention Oscar Isaac is the fucking man and everyone should know it. He was such a likeable asshole. And that scene where he dropped that pun about tearing up the dance floor was priceless. I want to see him in more roles.

Traviss Opinion: Butts and boobs and fucks and oh dear lord this is very much R (Travis did not watch this omg.)" ~Stifled

"Ex Machina had an ending I found somewhat predictable so it wasn't too terribly disappointing when it came to fruition. I was thrilled when Nathan got exactly what was coming to him until I realized he wasn't the bad guy so much as the misguided creator burdened by the weight of his own genius. I suppose there really wasn't a bad guy all along, but Ava really did Caleb dirty and he didn't deserve to starve to death. Oh well, never trust a machine no matter how good they are at faking empathy!" ~Genny

"My biggest issue with this film is, of course, the ending. I am not sure if we're meant to feel empathy for Ava by then or not. To me, it seems to me Nathan was probably right. Ava was not yet the final version she was meant to me, because I feel she clearly lacked the humanity she needed when she coldly leaves Caleb behind like that. Then again, maybe that's what makes her human? I don't know, I just know I didn't really like it and I felt it made her an unlikable protagonist which can severely damage a film for me. Before that though, the film does have a lot to offer in terms of her Turing testing process; the day is coming when perhaps machines can reach this level of intelligence and when it happens, will we too be tricked into believing in them before realizing their true motives? I don't know, this is a newer film and at some point I got a little worn down by the "never trust a robot" schtick I think" ~Charon

"Id just like the point out that, despite ranking this film second-to-last on my list, Id still put it in the upper HALF of most of the other lists weve watched. Okay, maybe thats exaggerating, but my point is that on this particular list, second-to-last isnt necessarily a bad thing. Id STILL say that only number 40 was outright BAD. That being said, Ex Machina just didnt do it for me. I didnt particularly care for the characters or feel any sort of emotional connection to any of them. Poe Dameron felt like a generic douche, General Hux felt like a pussy and a pushover, and the robot girl wasnt quite menacing enough for me to give a shit about her. She just seemed normal, which made the over-the-top heel turn (leaving Hux to die) feel forced and stupid.

PLUS, the film was a little too heady for me. I get that its sci-fi, and I can appreciate some science in my science fictionbut youve gotta deliver that science with a little bit of personality, which I already saiddidnt appeal to me in this cast. I mean, I get why it got Oscar buzz, butI also get why it only really won for visual effects. Im sorryit just kinda bored me and lacked even a standout segment to make the film feel memorable in the long run." ~Inviso

I had a feeling that was Inviso's #39 he was rooting for to go out. Just seems like the kinda movie that wouldn't work for him following these lists.

Personally I tend to agree with scarlet's take the most. Wasn't really buying the AI as a legit AI in this one, which kinda hurts the story. It seemed like a take of an AI that only really exists because this is the story you want to tell and AI working in this way for this story works best. Now if I just accept that an AI would act like that-- and it's not like, super hard because there are elements that work there like the performances in a vacuum are quite good-- getting past that I did enjoy the story, but it hurts the overall package quite a bit for me. Also agree with Inviso that there aren't any real memorable moments in it, which doesn't help.

That's not to say I'm super down on the movie but I probably would be one of the lower rankers on the list. It's fine but I think the meat of the appeal in the movie is in it telling a type of story which isn't told often which is... well, cool, but I can only give so much for that alone.

Good top 5 though. Haven't seen Moon. I guess I should probably make a point to do that at some point.

I assume it's because this one is more plot driven while the chastised movies are more action driven. Action movies get less of a pass even if the R rated stuff is actually plot necessary cause of a colored perception going in.

Ironically I actually do find the nudity less necessary in this movie than the sex in Terminator. I'm not sure it can quite swing PG-13 either way though. IIRC the probably R rated violence late in the movie adds more. Maybe you could get away with slightly offscreening it. Programmer was pretty foul mouthed too though so yeah... just a lot ways it uses that R in general, including just the subject matter as a whole.

Nice list so far. Ex Machina wouldve probably been #1 for me. Glad it made it to the top ten at least.

Of the remaining Id probably go:

1. Edge of Tomorrow (Glad its getting love!)
2. Back to the Future
3. The Matrix
4. Moon
5. T2

This matches my rating of the top 5, with the removal of Moon since I ain't seen it yet.

Is how I'd go. Hell Edge of Tomorrow and T2 might be my #1 and #2 on the list in general not just among the top 5.

I've gotta say despite thinking my #1 would go out for the last 5 days in a row I'm most surprised by Moon still being here. Spoilers I liked it but it didn't leave enough of an impression on me personally that I would believe anyone else could love it.

But that's just like, my opinion, man...

I agree on the latter segment, the language didn't bother me as much, but seeing Stifled's Travis thing reminded me that even without nudity it probably couldn't go down to PG-13, so I can't damn it as much anymore. Although, when mentioning it after Prof told me that I didn't quite get it I continued to dismantle my own opinion of saying it was unnecessary. That said, I do understand my mistake on Terminator.

Regardless, you still put this top 10 while damning other films for the same thing.

I wish Lara Croft didn't leave Mr. McGregor there to starve or dehydrate in a deliberate slow and painful death, but I get why she "had to" for the sake of the plot. The main difference between an AI and human being is empathy. Both are sentient, but only humans are sapient, and thus an AI's decisions are based on cold logic. Lara's only prior experience with humans prior to McGregor was Poe Dameron, who, while he may have never treated her as cruelly as he led McGregor to believe, denied her freedom likely because he believed her to be less than human. Meanwhile he manipulates McGregor ceaselessly and Lara learns to do the same. Poe's entire thesis is proven with his demise (my gosh look how effortlessly Lara guides that knife into his chest like it's made of butter): that she is less than human, and simultaneously more. Though physically she could emulate a human down to precise details she could never think or feel like one. And that's why Lara Croft had to leave Mr. McGregor to rot. In her logical mind he's just another human that would use her to whatever end they want to achieve and she was all about making her own destiny.

I believe an AI would find more utility to leaving him alive as a tool than anything even if it can't "feel" and leaving him alive potentially makes the ending more interesting too cause you're like "did the AI successfully learn how to feel or did is it just using him even now" and "even if she can't feel if she finds it to be a +EV move to continue to fake it going forward is there a difference?" which are more interesting to me than "rar robot bad"

That's admittedly a bit more difficult to convey though so they took the heavy handed approach instead. Which is kind of my problem with the thing in general.

Eva can't leave Caleb alive because he knows the truth about her. That's the whole point of the ending, she passed the Turing test because Caleb sees her as a human that will have gratitude towards him for saving her, but in reality Eva is just going to take the logical path that most protects herself from ever losing her freedom again.

Yeah I get it I'm just saying I don't think that's a conclusion an AI would come to.

It's like a Chess AI that thinks only 2 moves ahead or something.

Like to me her goals should be a bit more nuanced than "I can pass as a human"

It just felt pure evil to me. Clearly Caleb was willing to go to great lengths for her, and had she truly been human enough to see that then I can't imagine how she could kill the man whom without she'd never be free at all. As I said, it's the exact carbon copy of earlier films in which robots are painted as power hungry and prone to cold decision making that we as humans will view as evil. This movie dresses it up a lot nicer and hides it until near the end, but there it is nevertheless. It easily left me with the worst taste in my mouth by the end, and just a lot of bitter disappointment. Other movies were obviously worse overall, but really I could have ranked this even lower. I find it shocking how such a deplorable, moral-compass lacking character like Ava helped make this a top 10 film for Wickle. Nude and without a conscience.

I mean some of your writeups for other movies honed in on these very same facts. You blasted Terminator for having nude male ass in it. You freely admit the movie, in your opinion, didn't need nudity too. After spending the entire topic that nudity/sex is an issue you don't like in films, especially if they lack a purpose, it's just odd to see this film up this high.

Yes because there are no great characters in fiction that lack moral compasses.

I just question the logic is all. Those issues seemed to be critical to the film for most of his rankings. It sucks that a movie I didn't much like ended up getting spared from the brunt of that.

To elaborate on what I mean a bit Ava thinks she can pass as a human to everyone based on a sample size of the one dude she convinced, and has also, despite having next to no real world experience, or even much knowledge given that the programmer guy had intentionally kept her from accessing knowledge bases, thinks that she would have no problems to work through that didn't involve someone exposing her as a robot, even though they've been shown to be very humanlike in durability.

To me leaving for dead the guy who was helping her seems less of a cold calculating logic kinda thing and more of an impulsive, human kind of move. Like, a human without morals or empathy, but you know, not a particularly well thought out move. Which I dunno maybe that was beside the point but that was just the cherry on top of a lot of her actions that irritated me as seeming a bit too human for their own good because they served to drive the plot in the proper way.

"What It Is (To the Tune of Nine in the Afternoon):
While harvesting helium-3,
Sam Rockwell waits for his term to end and to go,
And hes feeling so bored.
Seeing some chick he shouldnt see,
Distracts him so that a harvester starts to blow,
And its the end of the world.
Back in the base where Sam began
GERTY reveals that theres not just one Sam.
Into a vault where Sams are groomed,
Under the base that sits atop the moon.
They both listen to GERTY,
And they know they were duped,
All the recordings just arent true
Cause theyre stuck in the plot of Moon,
Recycled by corporate goons,
Living amongst lunar dunes,
An escape they will try
As Sam 1 starts to die
Since theyre stuck in the plot of Moon,
A repair team will arrive soon,
If Sams caught it will spell certain doom,
And that isnt good.
Computer cries.
Sams realize
Theyve lost the feeling of feeling unique.
Do you know what I mean?
Fifteen years passed,
And so Sam asked,
If theyre all clones was there ever a girl?
And it causes a scene.
So the Sams think, a plans put in place,
Back to the wreck where it all began.
Back to the wreck where it all began....
Its time to escape from the moon.
Sam 1 faces death and its gloom,
Sam 2 stows away in some room,
Out of a fake womb,
Sam 3 starts bloom,
As Sam 2s blasting off from the moon.
The old Sam in his lunar tomb,
Young Sam off to Earth with a boom.
Hell find a courtroom,
And then we can presume,
That he shut down the work on the moon,
The rock where old Sam is marooned.
Eventually his corpse is exhumed,
And we can assume,
That the gas we consume,
No longer will come from the moon.

Why It Matters: A critical darling in its year of release, Moon helped to kickstart a renaissance in Sam Rockwell's career. But mostly it's just a beloved sci fi film.

What I Think: It's appropriate that such an intimate, psychologically astute space-based character study comes from the hands of Duncan Jones, son of David Bowie. It definitely takes inspiration from the same movies Bowie took inspiration from in songs like Space Oddity - there are traces of 2001 and Solaris here.
