I think I spent $5 for a TLoU Factions weapons pack or something. I used it for a while but I wound up regretting it later. Not much money wasted but it left a bad taste in my mouth

idk if they still do, but it was all over the ps4/paragon board/communites. you could get a full refund by submitting a ticket with proof of each purchase

Good LORD, man. That's an assload of DLC. I remember playing the beta for Paragon, and it felt like a sci-fi version of SMITE. It showed promise, but I was hesitant to throw money at it.

It's a shame what happened to Battleborn. If it weren't for being so outclassed by Overwatch, it might have had a decent chance. Of course, that wasn't the first time that a decent game got killed by a better alternative (and it won't be the last).

they weren't the same genre.

overwatch is a fps with objectives.
battleborn was a moba.

Fair enough. But it's been well documented that the launch of Overwatch directly impacted Battleborn's community.

Had they launched further apart, things may have turned out differently for Gearbox.

Yeah, I did get about $150 back but the problem with the refund policy is that Epic asks for specific dates and times of purchase to go along with the dollar amounts, however the PSN doesn't list the names of what you were buying in your purchase history (as far as I could find anyway). I buy a lot of stuff off PSN so I could really only guess at what was for Paragon and what wasn't. I got the refund for the $100 Master Founder pack (as I've only ever spent more than that on a single purchase one other time so it was easy to spot) and $50 I spent to buy all the skins they put out in their first Halloween event because I remembered the date specifically.

Gotta say, I really miss that game. It had so much potential. Which is honestly why I think Tencent sabotaged it. They wanted a SMITE competitor, not a LoL competitor...but that's another conversation entirely lol.

psn sends you emails that include receipts when you purchase anything. and the game died because epic just wants to sell fortnite skins.

@ shipwreckers
paragon didn't have paid dlc (they released new characters for free), it was in-game currency that he spent money on.

overwatch killed it because some idiot said they were similar and most started believing it.

paragon is coming back btw, under some other people who got permission from epic. might only be pc though

My dumbass deletes all my old emails unfortunately lol. And saying it was because of Fortnite is sort of glossing over a lot. Yes, that's ultimately what happened to the Paragon team, but there was a shit ton of stuff that happened in the years leading up to that point. Specifically Tencent wanting to change the focus of the game, which eventually forced Steve Superville out the door. But, again, that's another conversation entirely.

But yes, the money was spent on cosmetic stuff mostly. Skins and emotes, that kind of thing.

Well, I may have sparked yet another "DLC" vs. "Microtransactions" debate. There's a fine line between the two, but when I was excluding microtransactions in the OP, I was more referring just the purchase of virtual currency. You purchased in-game content with the money, so IMO, that's still DLC.

The problem with virtual currency is that you can spend it on anything (especially in mobile games, where you're spending the currency for nothing more than speeding up a task, or eliminating RNG chances at crafting success, etc.) Sometimes it's hard to tell what will actually bring value. I've seen some people spend hundreds of dollars on mobile game "gatcha" mechanics that was literally gambling with no "content" to show for it whatsoever.

I thought about that while posting but the sheer amount I spent + the fact that is was spending the money on specific in-game items as opposed to loot boxes or something takes it a bit above mtx imo. Just a bit though.

Can't say I've ever bought expansion-pack-style DLC that I haven't been happy with. The occasional "starter pack" type thing for a multiplayer game that is useful for all of two hours, but that's about it.

Fallout 4 does and it makes me mad cause I don't have the spare cash to waste on such things but I've always felt far harbor was overpriced and now it's at a more reasonable price. But I had already set my mind on buying Castlevania Requiem even if just for rondo of blood since I never played it. Whole game is always going to beat out a dlc for me when the prices aren't much different

Sorry, I must've missed this post before, but that seems to be a rather silly sentiment. It's sort of like having a "no appetizer" policy at restaurants (which, in fact, some people do; appetizers can be straight-up cash-grabs).

But, just like with appetizers, some DLC actually CAN be pretty dang good in the right place, made by the right people. If you swear them all off on principle, you can end up missing out on some truly good stuff.

So, I got RDR 2, but it SEEMS that the only way to get DLC is by buying the game's "special," or "ultimate" editions. (seriously, there's three different "editions" you can buy on PSN for this game).

But, I'm not seeing any additional individual add-ons. That's kind of a crappy business model. I guess unless you fork out the wad of cash for the ultimate edition ($99), it's impossible to see all of the game's content (even if you're willing to pay for it after buying the base game).

They may add it later. For Xenoblade Chronicles 2, if you bought the special edition, you got the Torna game for free, and early. If not, you have to wait like a week to get it. And instead of paying $20 extra for the in game items (very useful) and the other game, it would be $40 (I think) for the other game.

Hopefully Rockstar will release an "Expansion Pass" similar to Xenoblade. If you own a physical copy, you're going to need a DLC-onlly purchase option of sorts. Xenoblade's approach would be fine, IMO.

No, it was actually pretty dang cool looking. If anyone on TES Nexus had come up with it, it would have done great. It's just that paid "vanity item" DLC wasn't really a thing yet. Horse armor was one of the very first (widespread) DLC's that was purely for aesthetics alone.

Heck, many games now build their entire business model around aesthetic DLC. (If you don't believe me, just look at Dead or Alive; Last Round, or Capcom games, or the Dynasty Warriors series.) At least with Horse Armor, it was actual downloadable content, and not put on disc just to be locked behind a paywall.

I'm thinking about making another topic asking what is the highest amount of money people have ever spent on DLC.

I used to think 20-40 dollars for DLC was excessive, but I'm now seeing some games on Steam with several hundred dollars of DLC, for a SINGLE GAME (some even pushing $1000+ in total content).

Knowing the types of games those are for, you are not buying ALL of them and it is not expected you would. It is usually a case like The Sims where you buy the ones that you think would work best for your game experience and ignore the ones you would never use (For example, you want Pets and Seasons, but not College Life or Night Life). In those cases I am fine with it because those are games you are spending hundreds upon hundreds of hours playing, putting in another $60 worth of DLC to enjoy it more isn't that big of a deal.

My only grief with games like the Sims is that they sometimes lock core game engine functions behind the paywalls (e.g. Seasons, which I think the only way to get certain weather options).

Other games like Railworks or DOA: Last Round are are almost like a collector "storefront." So yeah, in those games, nobody is EXPECTED to get all the DLC. You just get the stuff that sticks out to you, or tickles your fancy.

That's true. Another good thing about Steam in particular is that users can leave reviews for the individual DLC's in addition to the game itself, so you know which DLC's are worth getting, and which ones are steaming piles of crap.

That aspect can help protect your wallet as you try to get the good stuff and avoid bad stuff.

You can also disable the individual DLC too if you want to play a more vanilla game. I really only want one DLC because it unlocks the first playable time period which sucks since it's behind a paywall and you can see it in the main menu. I think the viking DLC is like that too but I got that when I got CK2.

Nintendo's eShop DLC won't let you buy any DLC you've already purchased for that very reason. But in Nintendo's case, it's actually annoying. For example, if you own a single piece of DLC for Smash Bros, you can't buy the big all-in-one DLC bundle. It'll say "you already own part of this DLC pack" or something like that. It could be a 99 cent DLC, but you still can't buy the bundle. You have to manually buy all of the items individually. <_<
