I just can't wait to get on the road again

That's right, it's been long enough since I've done one of these, it's past due. If you don't know/remember what this is, a few years ago I set out on the task of playing every numbered Final Fantasy, in order. When I started this little project, FFXIV A Realm Reborn was out, and the Heavensward expansion and FFXV weren't released yet. Over the course of a year, I played every Final Fantasy, from I to XIII-2. I didn't play XI or XIII-3. I might play XI one day, XIII and especially XIII-2 were so bad I didn't bother with 3. Don't really want to, anyway. This time I'm playing Final Fantasy XV: Road Trip Simulator 2016.

Before we get into that, I've played FFXIV every day for a couple of years now, but I don't make topics about it, because nobody would care. I can say that I have played Dragoon way more than I care to admit, and I have cleared many many raids, and I have every single Job and gathering/crafting class max leveled. Recently got into tanking, and I quite enjoy it. I don't really like Paladin, it's a bit too simple for my tastes, but Dark Knight and Warrior are tons of fun.

Anyway, FFXV! Where to begin. I started out with the tutorial, and found the game unresponsive. I started over and tried the lore tutorial, went up to a painting... and nothing happened after the first text box, and I couldn't exit. Off to a great start already! So I killed the process and relaunched the game, and now it works fine. So how is it? I heard it was unfinished, and it feels like it. The map feels empty and needlessly large. NPCs are very rough looking. The art design is a bit uninspired. Music is ehhhh. There were like 4 cutscenes that seemed to have nothing to do with each other, it feels like it takes 30 minutes to get going then you start hitting dogs with sticks. Combat is... weird. You just hold a button to attack, and when a prompt comes up you hold a different button to defend. But sometimes it doesn't defend. Sometimes there's no prompt. Sometimes you can tell one of the backstreet boys to shoot a gun or something and you might be able to follow it up with another attack. Idk maybe there's more to it later.

Maybe it's just off to a rocky start, maybe like XIII when the game really gets going it's not so bad. I'll give it a fair shot.

And, no, I DON'T hate Final Fantasy. I love Final Fantasy. pretty much every game before 10, excluding 2 and 8 are masterpieces, and some of the most influential and important games ever made. It's just, barring XIV, recent FF games have been bloated messes that stray too far from what makes FF amazing.

I might play XI one day

Just so you know, although it's an MMO, FFXI has added new features that make it possible to play most of the content completely solo now.

(Square-Enix was kind of forced to add such features due to the dwindling player-base.)

Did you watch Kingsglave, the prequel movie for FFXV? If not, you probably should. You kind of need to watch it in order to understand the story. The movie basically goes into explicit detail about what all that "shit that happened back home" was all about.

I recently watched some missions on Youtube and saw that as well. There are still people playing it, sure, but it's effectively a glorified chatroom attached to a mostly solo experience (with exceptions).

If it wasn't for my lack of a game copy, or the extra subscription, I might have considered just doing that myself, at least more than I did. I'm content with what I watched, and having listened to the soundtrack over again.

I beat Arkham Knight a few days ago and got the true ending. I was right, the Knight was Jason Todd lol. Also, I'm fairly certain Bruce Wayne wouldn't kill Alfred and himself, so I'm guessing "Nightmare Batman" is just Bruce under a different identity. And there's a lot of hints that this is true, like his final interactions with Catwoman, Nightwing, and even some of the villains. It really doesn't make sense for any of the Robins to take up the mantle, and Terry McGinnis 1) wasn't born yet probably and 2) was never mentioned once in the series, so NB is probably not Batman Beyond.

I'll get back to FFXV today. Been busy with FFXIV stuff.

BTW, NA fanfest is in 4 days. The next XIV expansion will be announced. I'm guessing we'll get:
A 30 second teaser trailer
The title (Shadowbringers?)
The setting (Ilsabard? More specifically, Thavnair? Garlemald? We'll see! There have also been hints in the recent MSQ of Dalmasca so we might be getting some more of Othard. Which I'm okay with because I really like the Othard zones.)
New level cap is 80
Skill pruning + new skills
New 8-man raids (Personally, I think Jenova, or Seymour/Yu Yevon would be great raid villains, and they would both lend their games to a lot of good fights. Maybe we'll get confirmation of the next raid villain in 4.5)
New 24-man raids (I always thought Kefka's Tower would be a 24-man raid... but he's a boss in Stormblood's 8-man raids, so who knows what this will be.)
New Ultimate raids. (I think Kefka and the Warring Triad would make a perfect Ultimate raid)
Minor system changes/announcements. I'm guessing either a rework/expansion of the Role Action system, or it will be removed entirely. Please no Eureka 2 announcement.
Hints at new Job(s) (Blue Mage? Dancer? Gunblader? Something crazy like Arithmetician?)
Hints at new playable race (Viera yes please)

There were a series of leaks several months ago about 4.3 and 4.4, and pretty much everything they leaked turned out to be true. With the exception of getting Blue Mage mid-expac. So it's *possible* since dataminers have actually found Blue Mage and Blue Magic actions in the data files, we might be getting it in 4.5, or it could even be a pre-order bonus for 5.0. We'll see.

Two of the main reasons I dislike FFXIV so much are the GCD and how classes are so locked into the trinity, idk if it's changed since I played in 2014 but I would have liked certain classes to have multiple rules beyond the generic DPS/Heal/Tank thing these games always embrace.

Basically ruins the fun a class like BLU would provide to the game.

Nah, it's still pretty rigidly Tank/DPS/Healer.

But I do share your concerns. I think BLU would be a cool tank concept, but everything we know about it (Or, ClassJob36 as it's known in the data files) suggest it's a caster DPS. And Dancer as a healer... I don't have the foggiest how that would work. Every healer in the game uses either hots or shields. I would love more variety, but it's possible XIV's code base doesn't allow for more variety. It was forked from XI's source code iirc, so they're basically hot gluing new things onto some very old code.

But there were some pretty big developments in the 4.4 story, that heavily imply a new calamity is coming VERY soon. So if that happens in 5.x, that would be the perfect opportunity to rework/revamp old systems.

Oh, and the slow GCD. Eh, I'm fine with it. I do admit that at low levels it can be painfully slow. But once you have a complete 50/60/70 kit, it's fine. Especially classes like DRG, or DRK, where you're weaving in oGCDs between every single GCD, it feels perfectly fine.

Oh, so some more predictions/wish list items for 5.0

Removal of base classes. If there is a big system rework on the horizon, I can see the removal of classes happening, then when you start a new character you'll just go straight to Job. Now, how they'd actually incorporate this, I have no idea. Are they going to remove a bunch of low level quests? Are they going to rebalance a bunch of low level quests? Are you going to start at level 30? Who knows. But this is something they have talked about doing in the past. In addition to this, they NEED to do something about the 2.x story. It takes forever, and if you really want to play AST or DRK, or for some ungodly reason MCH you need to do ALL of it. Hopefully new 5.0 Jobs you just unlock at 50 like the SB Jobs.

Something I would love to see them do, but I doubt it's going to happen. I know Yoshi-P has praised Diablo III's Torment system before. If they could somehow implement a scaling difficulty system for dungeons and raids, that would be fantastic, and breath some much needed new life into some very old content. I don't know what the rewards in such a system would be. Hopefully they DON'T move towards more random stat Pink gear, but with the Eureka Pyros weapons being so RNG heavy... I wouldn't put it past them.

Anyway, finally got back to XV. I'm understanding the battle system, and overall flow and loop of the game better now. The initial few hours and presentation, I'll be honest, were horrendously bad. Just awful. But now, 12 hours later, I'm actually enjoying myself. I wouldn't say it's a great FF, but it's not as bad as I was expecting it to be.

Also I went to a dungeon to slay a Gigantoad for the professor lady, and found a 400 power greatsword just lying on the ground. It's by far the strongest weapon I own right now lol. Well, outside of the zodiac or king weapons or whatever they're called. Also from that little excursion, and the exp from the quest itself, I gained like 5 levels lol.

There are two factors as to why I haven't gone back to XI upon doing my break from XIV:

1) Despite there being features present to made the game actually better than XIV's Eureka at its best, I still have such bad memories of playing it twelve years ago.
2) Part of my break from XIV means not paying money to SE, so they don't win not matter what I do. You know?

I lost my copy of XI ages ago, and have no interest in paying a sub on that game. lol

Got to level 50 in Pyros. So now all I need is to fight Penny a couple times, farm a few hundred more crystals, and then it's an endless light grind again. And that's just for 1 weapon. Nobody knows if the light grind is optional or required though until the next Eureka zone drops.

So the way it works, is once you complete the 385 step weapon, that's only the beginning. The "finished" weapon has 0 substats on it. What you do is fill 2 light crystals, take them to the forge, then you can roll a single line of stats, from 1 to 200. You keep doing that for a while, eventually you get 2 lines, 1 to 200. Then 3. Then 4 and finally 5 lines. And they can be anything. So a BRD can be stupidly lucky, and get 1000 crit on their weapon. Which, btw, it can have up to 1000 stats, which is like 400 more than Suzaku weapons. It's a horribly grindy system, and I hope they don't do this again. But, in some ways, it's actually totally worth grinding it out, since it has way more substats on it than you're going to get in raid weapons. And we have no idea if those stats will carry over to the 4.5 step or not.

Anyway, XV, unlocked rank 3 hunts. So, I still haven't gone to meet Glad's sister in Lestallum. So, I'm thinking what I'm going to do is do as much side stuff as I can now, accumulate buttloads of exp, then go rest in the resort and see how far that gets me.

That's close to what I did. Don't forget about things like multipliers from using magic, especially if you mixed that magic with the right number of the right coins. Also, be on the lookout for Cactuars, as rare as they are. That's where the real experience is.

And now: random Ignis jokes...

During the XIV/XV crossover, I hope we crafters get to come up with NEW RECIPEHS!

If Ignis were a seer, how often would he say "That's it! I've come up with a new propheceh."
