Hideki Kamiya

Hideki Kamiya got shit on for "being toxic" because his behavior and habit of blocking people on Twitter was seen as mean. It was one of those targeted campaigns where something is left to lie for months at a time, then people collect whatever evidence they have and unleash it all at once.

Kamiya, being Kamiya, handled it in a chill manner and presumably just blocked all of the haters.

When we get these big names in gaming like Sakurai, Hideo Kojima, Hideki Kamiya, Chris Avellone etc. - whether they're seen as visionaries or auteurs or masterful writers or whatever - the fans of them start to get really needy and expect their favorite content creator to start catering to them. The cult of personality that forms around popular creators becomes a moist breeding ground of entitlement and shitty behavior. The same thing happens in other big fanbases, with subsections of fans collapsing in upon themselves and fracturing off to attack other fans and shit. If there is "A Name" in gaming, that person has experienced this sort of toxic horse shit.

But Brawl was only worse for competitive players. Sakurai clearly learned that his attitude toward competitive Smash was wrong though, so why does it matter anymore? The guy isn't flawless but he's been a consistently great developer in my opinion.

Brawl was a sabotaged job and a big fuck you to everyone. The smarter casuals know somethings up when they realize Captain falcon sucks and feels different (because no momentum transfer) even if they cant put their finger on why. This is an actual complaint Ive heard.

Additionally items suck, theyre either useless or incredibly over powered in comparison to Melee where they provide an advantage, but they are varying degrees of worth grabbing. This extends to poke balls. In Melee (and 64) some are very good, others are just nice help. In brawl theyre either irritating but not dangerous or nearly a guaranteed kill.

And because lack of hit stun, casuals will bitch about how they got hit right after hitting you (BECAUSE SOME MOVES ARENT EVEN SAFE UPON HIT WTF SAKURAI) instead of bitching about scrub stuff wtf you grabbed me through my shield etc.

So yeah, brawl was bad and a big fuck you to everyone who enjoyed melee and 64.

Most one-man teams are beloved, but they also don't tend to mouth off and just spend their time making games, e.g. Toby Fox, Edmund McMillen, Pixel (Cave Story); and on the other end of the spectrum you have Phil Fish who canceled Fez 2 over fucking Twitter drama of all things

Keiji Inafune made it a very long time, but then Mighty No. 9 happened

Gaben frankly doesn't deserve any of the hate and bitching he gets, Steam is the best thing to happen to gaming so far in the 21st century

Basically the ones that get hated on either got really arrogant and disappointed everyone, or started mouthing off about current events. CliffyB probably had the biggest downfall of them all, getting all mouthy and arrogant about Lawbreakers, which flopped, and then moving on to Radical Heights which closed before it left its beta, after leaving Epic Games right before they released Fortnite.

Top that all off with a bunch of insincere virtue signaling and you have a man who went from the beloved Gears of War guy to a total laughing stock.
