So for details regarding the poll, The live NFL draft has to occur in the spreadsheet due to all the draft info residing in it, and my brief attempt to run the draft in both Discord and spreadsheet was a complete failure. However, the live sim doesn't necessarily have to be done in the spreadsheet too. I have to update it for things like injuries and league leaders after certain weeks, but the live sim chat doesn't have to occur in the spreadsheet. I know that Discord is obviously better suited for chat, but I also know that the spreadsheet is more convenient if you want to immediately look up some info on a team or player. I could also compromise and try and remember to post game scores on Discord for those interested if the majority would prefer to keep the live sims in the spreadsheet. Basically our options boil down to:
- Do live sims in Discord where it is more suited for discussion as a whole
- Do live sims in spreadsheet where the convenience of all the relevant data for discussion can be found
- Do live sims in spreadsheet but also post game scores in Discord
- Some fourth option?

The award ballot by comparison is minor, but I feel like we need to determine what we want to do with it. Normally, I use what the game gives me for the awards that have an in-game counterpart. These are always five-player ballots. A few seasons ago, stevr lamented that two players that he wanted to vote for Off. and Def. player of the year awards (QB Peyton Manning and DT Jimmy Kennedy) were not finalists. The following season, I decided to make any player who was up for a positional award to be eligible for Off player, Def player, and MVP awards, essentially making those categories write-ins. Several users skipped over those categories and made a note that the massive amount of nominees was too overwhelming for them to choose. Just last season, I tried to meet people halfway and make those three categories full of 10 nominees, but people still found that to be overwhelming. Our options are as follows:
- We revert back to the way we did this in Seasons 2-8 and have five person ballots for every award (except sometimes GM of the Year) and use the list of Madden finalists unless I make changes at my discretion.
- We go with stevr's method that we used in Season 9 and do the write-in method for Off player, Def player, and MVP awards.
- We go with the hybrid method of Season 10 and have Off player, Def player, and MVP awards be expanded to 10 nominees.
- Some fourth option?

Coaching Changes

I say this every year, but I have found no evidence that suggests that your coaching staff has any impact on your team in a pure sim like this. Any changes in the coaching strategy as a result of a new coaching staff can be negated through user intervention (if any of that confuses you, we will go over that once we reach the preseason). That being said, I like to reveal coaching changes since I believe most of us are curious about them.

Haha I'll try not to, Shattered! They've actually not been that bad over the years. They've been closer to a 7-9 win team than a 5 win team or less. Other than the one year they were an AI team they've had two extremely idle GMs over the last 10 years. I might not have had the best track record in Tennessee but I think I've learn a lot in that time and I will try not to repeat the same mistakes with the Bears that I did with the Titans.

Lightning sign Wildcats OC Mike Tice

Also kinda funny that we decided to change both OC and DC after the best seasons since I've been running the Steelers when there seems to have been barely any change in staff since I've been with the Steelers, even in the terrible seasons!

For voting, I could be wrong, but I think a happy compromise is you give people how ever many nominees the people vote for (I don't mind one way or another), but you allow the people (like myself for instance >_>) who want to write-in more deserving folks to cast those write-ins (and count them) even though they obviously aren't going to win.

I realize Manning wasn't going to win that year, but he was absolutely robbed!

As for discord vs. spreadsheet, I've never used discord for anything and would personally prefer to make that a decision that holds for the duration of my life, but if other people decide otherwise, I will unhappily accept this terrible decision.

As for Stan, how dare you defeat the Bills, trade all your draft picks to KCF, and then leave the Titans desperate and alone. You could have at least traded the Bills one of your good players before you left. I cannot and will not forgive this, and I look forawrd to an even worse tenure for you with the Bears.

Though I have to admit, I'm not sure it's actually possible for you to lose more games with the Bears than you did with the Titans.

Fairly certain I own the Chiefs 4th round pick and they own my 6th round pick KCF.

This was a result of them needing a 4th round pick last year to pick up Owen Daniels in RFA. So I gave them a 4th for 5th last year in exchange for them giving me a 4th for a 6th this year. Pretty sure that was the trade.

Oh, and as for B8NFLL developments:

Interesting that the Bills swapped OCs with the Panthers. Mike McCarthy may be a dumb walrus, but I thought he was actually reasonably successful with us in his tenure here. If my team's offensive production drops this year, Cam Cameron better look out!

Also, assuming you still have a chance to, can you tell me who our DC is, @KCF0107 ?

And my memory is usually good, but not always great, so just to make sure, Marvin Lewis is our head coach, right?

I've always preferred keeping things simple with the awards ballot. I also get a bit overwhelmed with too many choices. Maybe adding 1-2 extra nominees for MVP or whatever, but I'd leave that to KCF's discretion.

I have discord I am just never in the b8 one, but if I have reason to be sure.

I think the way to handle the voting thing is do it 2 phases. List the 5 like you said, and give 10 days for anyone to suggest anyone else they think is deserving to be on the list, and then just add them all to that list. So it could be up to however many people add in, but its not overwhelming because you have the 5 suggested and then the user suggested, even though its the same vote

Offseason in a Nutshell

I also briefly touched base on these in the sign-up topic (I think), but I will go into slightly more detail at this time. There are four major events during the offseason. They will be explained in full detail when the time comes, but here they are:

1. Restricted Free Agency
2. Unrestricted Free Agents
3. NFL Draft + Signing Rookies
4. Free Agency

Restricted Free Agency - This is easily the most complex of the four, yet it is the one that has the lowest activity. A small sub-section of players whose contracts run out are considered restricted free agents. These players can, but do not have to, be signed by their original teams to a 1 year contract at one of three fixed amounts. Those that do sign can then be offered contracts by any of the other 31 teams to multiyear deals. Any team who has a player sign a contract with another team will then have the opportunity to match said contract or let them sign with another team and receive NFL Draft pick compensation.

Unrestricted Free Agents - Any player who was not considered a restricted free agent is thus an unrestricted free agent. Teams then can elect to re-sign the remaining players whose contracts ran out or let them enter the free agent market. Unlike the previous event, the other 31 teams cannot do anything to you, so you are free to operate without outside pressure. There are a few more wrinkles, but it is pretty straightforward.

NFL Draft + Signing Rookies - This is an event where all 32 teams can select college football players to join their team. Each team normally has seven draft picks, one for each of the seven rounds of the draft. The order that a team selects is based on their record and playoff performance, if applicable, from the season before. Earlier in the topic, I mentioned this season's draft order, and all teams are free to trade draft picks. After the draft, a separate period of time is devoted to signing all the players that a team drafted.

Free Agency - All players not signed or re-signed in the previous three events enter the free agent pool, and this is the time that every team is able to bid on the services of those without a team (aka free agents).

The Almighty Slash Line

All contracts will be presented to you via slash lines. It is imperative that you interpret and understand a slash line and its components, so here is an example to kick off my seasonal explanation:

3 / $7.50 mil / $1.80 mil

3 = length in seasons that the contract will last. All contracts will end up being between 1-7 seasons in length. There are some in-game and league-mandated limitations on length, but I will explain that rather soon.

$7.50 mil = Total salary that a player will earn over the life of the contract should the contract not be reworked while still under said contract or the player released.

Using this example, the player will receive $7.50 mil over three seasons, which gives him an average cap hit of $2.50 mil. His cap hit will not be $2.50 mil in each season though. This contract will see the player's cap hit rise each season, so his first year cap hit might be $2.12 mil, $2.47 mil for the second season, and $2.91 mil for the final season.

$1.80 mil = Portion of total salary that is guaranteed, aka signing bonus. For most, this is the hardest thing to grasp about the slash line and contracts in general. The NFL does not have fully guaranteed contracts, which means that what a player signs for might not actually be what they receive in the end. The team that signs a player to a contract will always be on the hook for the final figure in a slash line, with the only exception being if a player retires while under contract.

Using this example, the player might have a cap hit of $2.12, $2.47, and $2.91 mil in the first, second, and third seasons. However, his signing bonus is stretched out evenly across every season. The annual bonus in this contract would be $600k ($1.80 mil / 3 years). The annual bonus is a feature on the team financial sheet, so that info will always be available to you.

Now, if you trade or release a player under contract with guaranteed money, you will receive a reduction in your salary cap space, aka cap penalty, that is equal to their annual bonus x the years remaining on their contract. Using this example once again, let's say the player is released after the first season. That would leave him with $1.20 mil left in guaranteed money ($600k annual bonus x 2 years left on contract). The team that signed him to that contract would then be issued a cap penalty the following offseason to the tune of $1.20 mil.

If that player would be traded instead, the original team would receive the same cap penalty, but the new team would have a discounted contract. Because the original team is always on the hook for the guaranteed money, the $1.20 mil that is still owed that player is taken out of the contract for the new team. If the cap hits for years 2 and 3 were originally $2.47 and $2.91 mil and the annual bonus was $600k, then the new cap hits for the new team would be $1.87 and $2.31 mil. The new team could then release or trade the player at any time without financial repercussions since the contract no longer had any guaranteed money attached.

Finally, in case someone doesn't know, mil = dollars in millions while k = dollars in thousands.

For the first time, I did not do that post from scratch and decided just to copy-and-paste it from last season. I didn't hear any complaints about what I wrote last season, so I hope that this will do. Feel free to ask any questions if not.

Just realized, Dolphins get another year out of Kelly Campbell and McClure. Bet KCF is going to have fun with cap room this off season. Although that seems to be the case every season

Heheheh. Honestly, I was going to stick with the Titans for at least two more years I think and see where we went but well...when you have a chance to go to your hometown team (we weren't keen on switching teams the one year the Bears were an AI team) you kinda got to take it! I don't feel bad crushing the Bills dreams last year after they prevented us from having a winning record the year before. I do feel a bit bad about the FA signings but hey, maybe the AI Titans will cut their loses or something? I dunno. And lets be honest, you don't really consider any Titans players to be good!

As for retirements...well I picked a good time to switch to a team with a lot of quality players retiring yikes. The Titans meanwhile get another year of Asante Samuel and Prince Amukamara. I would have hoped Stroud would have stayed another year as they might have problems at DT coming. A little shocked that Kyle Boller didn't retire and I will never forgive the Titans if they don't resign him. It was very sad that Brad Kassell couldn't retire as a Titan due to financial reasons. =(

Glad I'm not in the AFC anymore! But yeah, looking more at the retirements I find it disheartening that the OLB I traded to Emerald so he could meet the OLB requirements while being under the cap is one of the last ones standing for his team...at 68 OVR.

As far as the sims/awards...I have discord but I don't really like it and don't use it for anything at all really. I'd prefer the spreadsheet chat but I'll go with whatever really as I have no strong feelings either way. For awards I do not like having the billion options for the 3 main categories. I have literally ignored the entire list and just revoted for whichever QB/HB/WR and DT/linebacker I voted for in the individual categories. I don't like revoting that way though as I like to split my votes more often than not. So I'm in favor of going back to the old way.

I assume that this is for the roster sheet. It wouldn't make things easier, but I am guessing people would like that format better?

I think what shattered was going for is that when you're doing rating changes, you wouldn't have to double click the cell and then maneuver the cursor to the number within the cell to do the change, instead you could just go down the new column containing the ratings and just rapid-fire "change value, enter, change, enter, change..."

Pretty much what Emerald said. I was going to add age to there too but then I realized that adds more work for you due to AI ages not being on the sheet

It also allows people to easily filter/sort by position and/or rating whereas the everything in 1 cell format doesn't allow anything other than sort by position
