Cheep, cheep, cheep, rank a little more.

Yes, I am here and despite all odds I've ranked all 69 crowd songs nominated. It just took me a few weeks more than expected. Sorry for those of you who understandably lost hope. But surely the most celebrated are the rehabilitated?
Loud and clear, Raka's here!

The definition of crowd song I used:
1. The song is a showtune or written in the style of one. It can be from a stage musical, movie musical, TV series, web series, etc.
2. The song is sung by 3 or more characters (both named and ensemble count) from the work it's from. So no disembodied voices.
3. Significant part of the song is sung together by the characters.
4. If it's originally written as a solo/duet song but then there's a production which turns it to a crowd song, it might count. I'll be the judge of it.

Nomination rules:
1. Up to 10 songs per user for now
2. Give the song title, the name of the work it's from, and the link to the song (Spotify/YouTube preferred)

Judging criteria:
1. Theatricality: Is it a song that's meant for the stage (or if it's a jukebox musical, is it adapted well to the story)? Does it fit the story, advance the story, or develop the characters? Does the song feel relevant to the singer(s)? If it's only meant to be a fun number, how bombastic is it?
2. Crowd Effectiveness: Is it really a crowd song, or is it mostly a solo/duet with some backing vocals? Are the characters utilized effectively in the song?
3. Appeal: Just how good/pleasant I find a song to be.
Needless to say, all these are subjective.

Nominations in the next post.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4g84dejrJXI" data-time="

From The Sound of Music
Nominated by Arria

Sorry, someone's gotta be last. And this sappy, monotonous little number it is. It starts boring enough with...is that Captain Von Trapp taking almost a minute to sing about a flower. Maybe it's symbolic of how Austria will eventually prevail over the Third Reich? Yeah I don't get it. It's just not very theatrical. It could've been some rando peasants singing that song instead AND it could've been any other sloooow ballad song up there, so this song is not very necessary.
I think anything else legible from The Sound of Music would have done better in my rankings: My Favorite Things, The Lonely Goatherd, Do-Re-Mi, Maria, and even...

So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, goodbye
Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye

68. Mr. Booze
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Lmz4CUB-4c" data-time="

From Robin and the Seven Hoods
Nominated by Underleveled

The first song to fall from a musical I didn't know until this topic. Robin and the Seven Hoods is a 1964 movie musical about the Robin Hood legend but set in the 1930s Chicago mafia life.
This song plays when the coppers try to raid the Hoods' HQ only to find them acting like they're good men and declaring that they're staying away from jazz and liquor.
So yeah, this song is probably true to both 60's and 30's era, sung in a...pseudo barber shop quartet style. Very old school. I wouldn't say it's not catchy, it kinda is, and the orchestration is rather fun. However it gets repetitive quite fast since it's just either the same notes ooor some randos trying to appear to be an honest, upstanding citizen. These dialogues break the flow instead of adding to it and they aren't really funny (though they'd be funnier in the context of the movie since I'll see these presumably ravenous, vile gangsters are just playing tricks on the sheriff).
It also scored quite in theatricality and crowd effectiveness because it's mostly sung by a lead and the crowd was just a vague congregation without enough character. Which might be understandable to some point since they're just putting up a show -- but it's not a very believable nor entertaining show.

Well, I don't hate it, at least. For a similar song with breaks where each member of the crowd talk about their take on the main theme of the song, I very much prefer Turn It Off from The Book of Mormon. Sadly nobody nominated it.

Trivia: the film's got crazy star power, including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Bing Crosby. Heck, I'm not American and I don't particularly listen to 60s era songs yet I know these names.

From Anything Goes
Nominated by Underleveled

Whoops, the YT link is down.
Well, this song is very similar in many regards with Mr. Booze. First of all, the crowd doesn't really factor in that much. Or at least from song itself I don't get the feeling that this backing chorus is truly singing from their hearts and not just for show.
As for the context itself uhh...I read the Wikipedia entry and apparently the song is about literally people repenting after confessing their sins? Too Biblical for me. Not that I take offense in the song's subject, but it's just weird that the lyrics are very non-specific and non-committal and very generic that it can be anyone singing that song. It just lacks relevancy and character by being too broad. Also it's like literally commanding an archangel to do your bidding which sounds more like a Satanist's thing than anything. "Blow, Gabriel, blow!" "Uriel, lock the window." "Michael, pick up the tab." omg rude??!

66. Prelude: The Ballad of Sweeney Todd
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8t4Ny39tt8" data-time="

From Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet St.
Nominated by Johnbobb.

No, just no. I don't like the melody, Sweeney is too silly a name to be taken menacingly, and at some parts it's too screechy and others it's too airy. I'll admit that it's technically satisfies as a crowd song though, as in yes, I can believe these are the people of London who all heard the tale of Sweeney Todd and are now sharing it with the audience. It is quite theatrical as well, it's rather dramatic and serves a narrative purpose. But the tune itself is unsalvageable to my ears. Anyway, it's good that the rest of the musical is better than this. Sweeney! Sweeney! Shut uppey!

65. Everybody Wants to be A Cat
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rrXR6n0RTY" data-time="

From The Aristocats
Nominated by GenesisSaga

Oh Genny how you tease me so. I really dislike this song. One of the most overrated songs in Disney history. No, not everybody wants to be a cat. That's just stupid. Society will break down and without renewable source of food, the ecosystem would be disrupted, then cats will cannibalize themselves and then die off. No. Well the song is not bad as I remembered it to be, but I still hate the seizure-inducing psychedelic part and...well, let's not even get into the very racist caricature there. This song is just all over the place, sometimes sleep-inducing and sometimes makes you want to tear your ears out (especially the final part with everybody everybody oh god shut up you smelly felines who should have never been born! Curse you!). I'd rather stay a human, thank you.

64. The Greatest Show

From The Greatest Showman
Nominated by Arria

Yeah, yeah, I know. I have to come clean I don't like TGS that much. It's somehow very barren (probably because they're trying to fit too many things in the film without giving each emotional moment ample time to really show its impact to the characters). Heck, despite it being full of crowd songs my favorite song was actually Never Enough.
Anyway, the opening beats are a bit scary for me...like...intimidating? Foreboding? The lines where Jackman mumble something scary about mindraping you. Well it gets slightly better at the chorus. But yeah it's just boasting about his circus and I don't really like circuses (circii?). No it's NOT everything I ever want or I ever need. F*** you. I need, like, actual friends and money and food to survive.
I really don't like songs that put words in my mouth.

Riesling
I love beat in the opening intro, it sounds really cool. I saw this covered by a marching band, it also looked really cool. It's kinda disappointing when the singing comes in though. I don't know, it's like they use some kind of filter to make the voice more pop? I'm sure Hugh Jackman could've sounded better.

Nominated by jcgamer

What.
Some of these people sound really weird. It's very campy and kinda cringey. Robin is very...random. Not really feeling it, sorry. Super Friends more like Super Fails. The lyrics are also not very funny or witty, if anything they're too repetitive. Not the best StarKid offering, I'd rather have Get Back to Hogwarts.

62. Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohr843F7a3o" data-time="

From Hamilton: An American Musical
Nominated by jcgamer

JC lost two in a row, sorry man. You can't control who lives, who dies, you ranks your show tunes.

Anyway, Hamilton has a lot of really good crowd songs but unfortunately none of my favorites were nominated. The Schuyler Sisters, Take A Break, Non-Stop, Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story, and even Story of Tonight and My Shot. Oh well.
Anyway, how much I like a Hamilton song is usually proportional to how little rap it has. Hamilton's little quartet is also not my favorite group of the Hamilton characters so yeah, this song just doesn't do much for me. Also there's a long break in this song that's basically just people...talking, and not very entertainingly. It would also say it's mostly by Hamilton and Mulligan (and a bit of Lafayette) with the crowd serving as backing but that's a bit nitpicky, I'll admit. I do consider Yorktown to be rather overrated, though I know this is not a popular opinion.

Riesling
My favorite thing about Hamilton is how it uses rap to narrate a historical scene. This song is not one I like to listen to, but it's really great to watch. I hope I can make a scene like this one day.

From Bye Bye Birdie
Nominated by Underleveled

Okay, so #TIL that the Birdie in the title is a man and supposedly based on Elvis Presley. I always pictured the character as a girl because it of the title similarity with Kiss Me Kate and, to a lesser extent, Thoroughly Modern Millie.
As for the song itself it tells the story of teens living in Sweet Apple, OH, gossiping about this girl named Kim (no relation to Miss Saigon's Kim) who just went steady with her beau. The thing is, she was about to quit the Birdie (a rock star) fan club but found out she was chosen to get Birdie's last kiss before he was drafted to fight the Civil War or something.
Though it's a fun way to introduce Kim's situation, the chorus themselves don't really have a shred of personality, which kinda takes away from it. The voices can also be grating, are they simulating teenagers voice breaking? And sometimes the way they deliver the lines are kinda weird. Just not very enjoyable to listen to, at least for me.
I like the concept more than the execution. I am sure it's much better on stage and I am intrigued by the staging potential of this song.

60. Where's Rebecca Bunch?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvecuwh4kbo" data-time="

From Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
Nominated by Johnbobb

I like Crazy Ex-Girlfriend as much as the next guy but by how many songs they must write and produce each episode, it's no wonder (and no knock against the show) that it's more often a miss than a hit, at least for me. And while this song is rather funny (at least in the beginning where they pretend West Covina is a medieval village) by the half point I'm just mostly bored, especially because I'm not digging the tune itself.

59. I've Got A Dream
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTuwo_TqlhQ" data-time="

From Tangled
Nominated by Maniac64

This doesn't sound pleasant at all. It's also kinda gross. The melody is just simplistic and it's almost catchy but just...not there. Definitely the weakest song in Tangled and sadly its only crowd song. And these randos are probably horrible people and their war crimes are hand waved just because they have ironic dreams? They also get formulaic after a while. Probably should've added one guy whose dream is as horrible as you'd expect.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CxXzV-zDtFQ" data-time="

From Beauty and the Beast
Nominated by Underleveled

This is something some of you already knew: I hate Gaston. Both the character and the song.
Though I don't mind the live action version so much (I still hate the message, but it sounds...better). Anyway, not seeing the despicable man on screen does help. The tune is fun and catchy if I just don't listen too hard to the lyrics, and the orchestration is really good. I do like that they use a whole pub to tell this story of the man who's more of a monster than the Beast. I still don't like Gaston, but it's a good and unique way to write a villain song.

This song makes for a great meme.

57. Another Day of Sun
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWnYIb2lqpo" data-time="

From La La Land
Nominated by jcgamer

I didn't like La La Land as much as the general public. Mainly because there were not too many songs I liked and there are so few crowd songs.
Well, Another Day of Sun is one of them and it's honestly a good and catchy tune but I just have some problem that...who the heck are singing this song? Are they all showbiz dreamers? Nothing really points at it since they were just...randos stuck in traffic jam. The song is more about the leads...Mia and...Kevin? that doesn't sound right. Or about the movie's themes. But that means these randos are just props and not really characters in their own right singing about what's actually relevant to them so yeah why should I care about them.
To be fair, it might be an homage to old style of musicals where they can just have anyone passing by the set to sing the crowd songs and call it a day, doesn't mean I have to like it. And then again I think of classic musical movie (let's say The Wizard of Oz) and even then the crowd singing the song actually makes more sense than La La Land's.

More or less. The movie's establishing the main theme of hopeless dreamers, with the juxtaposition of the very realistic and mundane traffic jam with fantastic and surreal song and dance that might match their showbiz fantasies about what LA might be like. The characters themselves aren't important, they all represent the small-town dreamer who moved to LA to try and make it big.

I think it's kind of pointing out the absurdity and insanity of the town and the people in it while also embracing it.

56. God, That's Good!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODWHhYftOcw" data-time="

From Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet St.
Nominated by KBM

I respect Sondheim immensely, but Sweeney Todd (as are all Sondheim musicals, I suppose) is quite an acquired taste. And it's one that I haven't acquired yet. I wish the songs were more melodic.
It's just...blah. Mostly just blathering, LuPone sounds rather annoying here but it's not really her fault, she did her best with her parts. Though Sondheim did very creative things with the lyrics and vocal parts and such, but if the end product sounds more like cat pies, then it might not be worth it. I just want to skip this mostly and I respect it more than I like it, otherwise it might've been lower.

55. Make Our Garden Grow
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlVD-jrq_Yk" data-time="

From Candide
Nominated by KBM

Somehow I wrote this as 'Make Our Garden Die', mixing the title with This Jesus Must Die. This is another musical I'm not familiar with. Anyway I...think I need the full context of this song to really appreciate it. As it is now, I don't know if these people joining Candide and her man are actually part of the story and thus rightfully sing together near the end, or is it just backing to make the ending powerful. Reminds me of Sunday (now that's one good crowd song). And anyway most of this song is a (boring, sappy) duet sooo yeah, I can't really put this one high. I have a feeling it might hold special personal value to KBM though.

It makes me sad that I think we have slightly less crowd songs in modern Disney musicals, at least compared to the renaissance. We only have I've Got A Dream from Tangled and Frozen Heart and Fixer Upper from Frozen.
I do enjoy When We're Human and Dig A Little Deeper a lot though, as well as Where You Are.

Love Candide. If there were a "best solo" ranking, I would definitely include Glitter and Be Gay. Kristen Chenoweth's rendition is particularly great.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2EI65ZEqYQ" data-time="

From Firebringer
Nominated by Johnbobb

Uhh, okay. The beginning part is quite funny but there are funnier songs that lampshade the concept of musicals (like That's How You Know from Enchanted, which is another song that I'm sad not to see here. And the melody feels half-done, it's just not very rich. It's just barebones -- like their society I guess. Though it's good for a chuckle or two.

53. We're Finally Gonna Be Fine
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Wi9qKURtKI" data-time="

From Community
Nominated by Johnbobb as well

From reading the wiki, I think it's a song that you can only fully appreciate if you're a fan of the show and I...have never watched Community in my life before this clip. The last 10 seconds are actually spectacular, but the first 50 seconds not quite so. It's just not constructed very well and it's like, very short, so even if it were all very good I probably wouldn't have been able to justify putting it too high either way. I imagine it's really funny for the fans though, so there's that.

Aw man, I figured the Community one would do poorly but I thought Firebringer would place higher

I like that the song basically sets up the gist of who all the characters are right away. The beginning is definitely where it shines though because Lauren Lopez is fantastic
