Gen IV was decent, if maybe not as great as Gen I and II (ignoring Gen I's buggyness).

The new GenIII games were utter shit; though the GenI remakes were alright.

Physical/Special split was a godsend. One of the best things they've done.
The only thing that makes me dislike Gen 4 a bit is how fucking slow those games were. It's been years by now, but I believe HGSS were a bit better in that regard, though.

The split should've happened in Gen II or III at the very latest.

Black/White really benefitted from completely abandoning the older Pokemon until after beating the game. Forced you to branch out and try new things, then come to the conclusion that Empoleon is the best.

Yeah, too bad people hated BW1 for that exact same reason, and now we will likely never get anything like it again. Instead getting smaller generations where they reveal almost all of them before the game comes out.

Gen IV was slow for two reasons

1, Sinnoh was massive. Tons of 2-3 pokemon trainers with trash at or the same level as things in the wild, so you barely got more exp fighting them from the section after the windworks place up until past the breeder npc house. But wait, that's just between gym 2 and 3. And it's like 6 areas, up to 8 if you try heading south from that city with the 5th gym (though I think it's the 3rd in Platinum?). And that entire stretch takes speed runners a solid 20+ minutes skipping most fights, it's more like 2+ hours for most players if they're skipping catching anything along the way.

2, the battle system and bulk. Stall teams that would set up were the meta for all of gen 4. Sweeping set ups could work if you did it early or end game but otherwise a bulk set up could be sent out early and have the staying power to beat half the enemy's team with just one attack move.

What's reason 2?

Also I heard Platinum sped things up a lot that's why people like it so much more besides being the 3rd version.

make that 3: The engine was terribly bloated/GF doesn't know how to optimize, so every action took twice as long as it should've (seriously, the hp scrolling, move animations, saving, surfing in dp, and at times even walking/running felt like my DS was about to crash )

I mostly battled in battle simulators

But yeah, ohkoing a blissey took an eternity even if they were low level, but one at 100 took so long that the entire universe ended, restarted, ended again and progressed billions more years before they finally got to yellow range.

It goes beyond just things like leftovers. The choice items, berries, focus sash, life orb, etc. all radically alter how Pokemon fight, even the same species of Pokemon. You have to have two entirely different strategies if you are fighting something with a Choice Band than you would if it were holding a Life Orb and being able recognize the difference and adapt accordingly.

The type split didn't really fundamentally alter strategy so much as it just made different Pokemon relevant. Definitely important but not strategy altering.

Gen 4 has the best competitive imo. Because the special/physical split happened making a lot of previous meh pokemon viable. And it was right before Gen 5's power creep and weather being OP.

yeah, especially compared to the lightning fast gen 5 (which is on the same system) and to a lesser extent gen 6, though things became slower in gen 7, especially doubles (seriously, there's like a 10 second wait between selecting the attacks and the attacks actually happening)
