This is a very important question, as I'm quickly becoming an enthusiast. There's so many different types to try.

Getcha some whisky stones and a nice glass. Something thick and sturdy too -- don't want something that will shatter if you slam it a little too hard. But still get something that looks nice.

As for what I drink -- whatever I haven't already tried. But mostly jack since it's cheap and abundant.

Scotch.
The Speysides tend to be really smoky, so start with one of the brands with "Glen" in the name, then wander into Speyburn if you want some smoke and see where you go from there.
Or, just get the cheap blended crap if you're going "and soda" with it.

Mild-mannered Drew, enjoying whiskey that is anything but. (I do keep Monkey Shoulder for guests and/or trying to convert the girlfriend, but the proof burn stands in the way, I think.)

The juxtaposition amuses me. I gravitate towards intensity.

Whisky stones do not work.

The soapstones absorb the heat of your whisky, so they lose temperature for your drink extremely quick (<25 minutes)

Wtick with neat, a big rock of ice, or a dram of water depending on your proofing (higher ethanol level whiskys benefit more from water due to booziness potentially diluting those underlying armoas and flavors)

I (for better or for worse) know far too much about alcohol given my career as a professional brewer. Obviously beer is my specialty, but I've had a deep appreciation for single malt for the past 6-7 years now.

Hey, whiskey's happening. I just found out the bottle I brought back from Kentucky many years ago, when I was broke, is discontinued now. (Heaven Hill 6-year BIB, a solid budget.)

Still haven't cracked it. It's reserved for when I move.

Wasn't the price hiked on it just not too long ago as welll?

Regardless I'd be willing to bet it gets rebranded and back on the shelves within a few years.

I'm pretty sure it got hiked just after the discontinuation.

Personally, I'd like to see an expansion on their wheaters. Old Fitz is damn difficult to get in California, but Larceny is pretty good.

I've been invited to hang out, sip some whiskey, and smoke a cigar (my first) in a few weeks. I'm just hoping I don't embarrass myself on the latter.

Tried Ardbeg the other week. A little too peaty for my tastes.

I love Islay scotch. Wife has gotten me Lagavulin the last couple years for my birthday/Christmas. Got me the distillers version last month for my birthday. It's great but I don't like it as much as the standard bottle. It's too sweet and isn't as smooth. My every day scotch is McClellands Islay. It's the closest I can get to Lagavulin for ~$23.

How's the Laphroaig? Was recommended it the last time I went whiskey shopping. Was planning on picking it up next time.

In regards to bourbon and rye, I haven't found any I like yet. If I'm going something that sweet, I'm just grabbing some rum.

I picked up the black label more as a mixing whiskey than for savor. I definitely recommend the Glenfiddich 18.
