They aren't regulated like actual medications and contain like 99% THC (1% CBD). Personally I'd want to avoid THC at all costs. By statute TSA is not looking for drugs so if any is found the case is turned over to the local police. TSAs only interest is if you tried to "artfully conceal" (intentionally hide) the drug in any way. Otherwise you usually just get a warning letter. TC it sounds like you were going through customs which is part of CBP. CBP can arrest you for drugs but they're usually interested in trafficking amounts. Unless you went to a federal facility and spoke to the DEA, the federal government really isn't interested either. They may fine but not prosecute if they're interested. If you went to jail it was an issue for local police. In California and other states, local police do not persue marijuana charges at the airport. If you're travelling to a state where weed is illegal they may make you dump it though. Sounds like the local police you encountered do have an issue with weed but I wouldn't worry about the feds. In the days when weed was illegal at CA airports the LAPD (not the most sympathetic, or charitable organization) used to confiscate it and write a $75 citation on the spot. You would not even miss your flight. For a cartridge, pipe or bong they would just confiscate it and send you on your way. Thats what I thought would happen. My expression was obvious shock ( not the oh no they caught me kind but the holy crap how did that get there kind) and I honestly thought she would just explain sir you have your valid med card and I see you are flying home but this isnt allowed here so I am going to have to discard it now. That would have been the reasonable thing to do after they established in clearly not bring anything else didnt even have the pen part to use the thing so I wasnt smuggling or anything. She said the tsa fine would have been 500 bucks which would have stunk but I would have put it on my credit card right then and there or went to atm .
