Is this really the only way they can make money?

I'd honestly rather pay $60-$70 on a game, wait a year and a half, and get an expansion that's adds way more content in addition to semi-regular patches

But in all honestly I don't know much about the development process, or if they can even sustain themselves anymore outside of releasing games basically as soon as they're playable and patching things out over the next three years
