Aw yeah Marimite.

I was actually kind of bored by the show at first, but it really grew on me over time. Some combination of adjusting to the slow pace and coming to understand the characters overtime, or something.

The third year girls other than Sei suck though, yeah.

33. Teekyu
https://cdn.myanimelist.net/images/anime/8/56463l.jpg
@FakeAccount3000

In some ways Teekyus just another show, but its presentation makes it the most unique anime on this list. It adapts a gag manga about four cute girls who dont play tennis, but rather than covering each chapter in 5 or 10 or 20 minutes, it adapts them in quick 2 minute segments (including a 30 second OP). Because of this, the pacing is INCREDIBLY fast, which works surprisingly well! The director knows how to use animation effectively (I think he animated the first few seasons of the show himself), and the style fits with the rapid fire gags the show throws otu. It basically never gets boring, because even if theres a bad episode, its done in two minutes and the badness barely sticks. Good episodes can leave you in stitches due to how fast the great jokes come out.

Of course, just being directed and presented well isnt enough to make a show great. The fundamentals are there too. The four main characters are pretty great (though Im not a fan of how much the MC tsukkomis). Bandou is by far my favorite, since everything she does is so damn random. Basically nothing she does ever makes sense, and everyone acknowledges how insane she is. She frequently goes to jail for eating other girls panties, which is great. The other two are just about as ridiculous. Nasunos money obsession isnt always funny, but the way she uses it for incredibly stupid reasons can be great. The minor characters are great too, especially the alien who basically becomes a main character eventually. And the quality continues for a full 9 seasons. Absolutely remarkable.

32. Steins;Gate
https://cdn.myanimelist.net/images/anime/1167/96846l.jpg
@xp1337

SG as an anime disappointed me in a lot of ways. I made the mistake of watching this basically immediately after I played the game, so the differences between the two were much more stark than they normally would have been. First, the art is way worse than the game. Hukes art is amazing, and though the anime doesnt look bad, its just not the same. Second, a lot of scenes barely use any music. I really dont understand why not, since the SG games music is great and the music the anime uses is good too. Its just not there a lot of the time. Third, the comedy isnt handled nearly as well, perhaps because the anime rushes through a lot of it. Some of it is great (a lot of Okabes stuff, especially), but Darus way worse in the anime.

Fortunately, the base game is great, so even an inferior adaptation would be good, and the anime adapts most of the serious stuff even better than its done in the game. Everything in the second half is awesome (Suzuhas letter maybe the one exception). The anime cuts a lot of the bad Okabe moments, and the fillerish arcs are reduced to focus on the core plot. Its really thrilling, the emotional stuff hits hard, and the character development is perfect. Okabe is an amazing protagonist - one of the best in any anime ever - and Kurisu is equally awesome as his co-star. Their romance is fantastic, and you really want to cheer for them to get together throughout the series, despite all the obstacles that get in their way. The ending is an absolutely amazing capstone on it all. Id say that it and the VN are about equal overall, but both are fantastic experiences, and everyone should check out at least one of the two.

I'd give the S;G VN the edge but I'm a sucker for MORE DETAIL and MORE CHARACTER SCENES and alternate endings and all that, but the anime is an amazing adaption and Top 5 for me.

The one thing from the VN I wish the anime found a way to include - but it probably would have been a bad idea and would have messed up pacing - was the Future Nae Time Leaping stuff.

Okabe the best.

31. Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu
https://cdn.myanimelist.net/images/anime/4/75260l.jpg
@Team_Rocket_Elite

Im not really a fan of FMP in general. The first season had a lot of ups and downs (with the majority of them being downs), and while S3 was better, it still wasnt awesome or anything. Thankfully, S2 has a completely different feel from the other two seasons. They had their fair share of jokes, but even at their silliest they didnt even come close to Fumoffus level. Everything about it was ridiculous. The writing is super on point the whole time, and of course it has that classic great KyoAni animation. It plays down some of the lamer aspects of the other seasons (like the love triangle - Tessas barely around), and by not taking things seriously, Kanames tsundereness works much better. Sousuke gets to do ridiculous things all the time, so his personality flaws are pure entertainment. The juxtaposition of serious characters and a silly environment has always been one of the top ways to create humor, in my experience, and this show uses it perfectly. The rugby episode is an all time classic. Everything just works. Its not the funniest series Ive ever seen (that would be Detroit Metal City), but its the funniest series on this list. Worth watching for everyone, even non-FMP fans.

30. Hyouka
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/5/38273l.jpg
@Handsomeboy2012
I dont know what it is about Hyouka. I think that maybe out of all of KyoAnis series, its the one that most depends on KyoAni to be great? Chuunibyou would be up there too, I guess. It doesnt seem like it does any one special thing that makes it better than all those other light novel club anime, but it is. The main cast and the side cast all have a good web of relationships with each other. Theres no lame harem elements, and the romances are ones you can really cheer for, though it does suffer the same problem most of them do where the couples dont actually get together the dream sequence where Oreki and Chitanda get together was absolutely amazing and they shouldve made it real just for the anime and if they had it would probably be a good ten spots higher on this list and augh it was so good and I hate it but I love it argh. The characters get development that makes them feel real. Oreki is a bit irritating as a protagonist sometimes, but he does a lot even when hes not doing anything, and he develops quite well throughout the show. Chitanda is the real star, and is super joyful whenever shes around. Shes an amazing blob of moe whos super cute and still feels real too. The other two mains arent quite as great, but theyre still compelling, and the side cast was excellent.

The story arcs for the show arent completely consistent, but they mostly have great climaxes (I wasnt fully sold on the series until the last episode of the Hyouka arc), and theyre a good way to deliver interesting content. What really makes the series shine above everything else is how well presented/directed everything is. Hyouka was basically the first modern KyoAni show, I think. There was nothing else quite like it at the time, and its still better than any of their other serious shows, IMO. The animation is incredible, too. 2012 was the year KyoAni became a big deal to me, and though it never had a year like that again, something being done by them will always catch my attention.

29. Kaiji
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/10/25467l.jpg
@MysticBrohan

What a quality show. I was always a bit biased against Kaiji. People talk about it more than Akagi, which I love (more than Kaiji), and Kaiji himself is such a loser protagonist. I wasnt really sold on the show at first, but wow is it good. Kaiji being a total pathetic wimp allows the author to put him in some really terrible situations, and also keeps the show from feeling too mean-spirited because he does a lot of it to himself. Almost all of the games in Kaiji are super interesting, even when they seem like theyll be boring at first. They usually start with Kaiji failing at them miserably, though the way this is presented throughout the show evolves in a pretty solid way as Kaiji gains more confidence and becomes (a little) less pathetic. The tissue box scene in S1 was a real highlight. One problem is that I figured out by the end of S1 that Kaiji always lost when he explained his plan beforehand, and won when he didnt. I think S2 handled this a little better by showing little parts, but it was still a bit disappointing to see the formula like that.

The dramatic tension is always incredible. I kind of cant imagine the manga version being as good, since the atmosphere is definitely helped by the amazing music (especially in S2), the way things are directed, and the fabulous narrator (He hates it! one of the greatest anime quotes). I actually read a chapter or two of part three and stopped out of disinterest, though I didnt really give it a fair shake. Its a show thats full of emotion without using typical sad or emotional storylines. I definitely teared up a couple times in S2. If the show has any flaws, its that the failure in the show can sometimes get frustrating to watch, and the pace is a little slow sometimes, but both of those work in the shows favor for the most part, so I cant complain too much. Kaiji is just plain great.

28. Rurouni Kenshin
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/7/6803l.jpg
@Reg

Im not 100% sure, but I think this is the first shounen series I watched after I actually got into anime? Perhaps not coincidentally, its still one of my favorites (theres one ahead of it on this list, but that might be the only fighting shounen I like more). It has a lot of issues, but I avoided the most notable one by stopping watching it after episode 62 (the end of the Kyoto arc), so I didnt get to enjoy filler hell. The Tokyo arc is a bit overly fillery too, but theres still good stuff in the there. Kenshins a cool protagonist, and all the guys who join the team are pretty solid as well. There are enjoyable mini-arcs here and there, and the show is basically just fun. But the Kyoto arc is the real reason to watch this. Im not sure if Ive ever seen such a stark transition between arcs before. We go from mediocre animation and a relatively happy-go-lucky atmosphere to incredible detail, way more style, and a far darker atmosphere in just one episode. I also read the manga for Kenshin, and while Tokyos certainly better there, the anime blows the manga away for Kyoto.

The cast of villains is excellent. Some of the early villains are solid, but all the Kyoto villains are a ton of fun. Saito kind of starts out as a villain, and is one of the coolest characters in the anime. Shishios crew is all fun too. They have unique abilities to make for interesting fights and most of them are given solid backgrounds as well. They feel like real people, which is nice for shounen anime villains. My favorite was the fight with Seta, which used sound and animation in a pretty unique way. Everything moves along at a good pace, the show builds to great climaxes, and its all presented very well. Such a great arc. The following arc in the Trust and Betrayal OVA was fantastic as well. Its a shame the anime never did Jinchuu, but that arc wasnt as good as what preceded it anyway. Definitely worth watching for any shounen fighting fans, as long as they stop at the end of the good stuff.

27. Lucky Star
https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/13/15010l.jpg
@PrinceKaro

And so we reach the reason I couldnt call Hyouka the best Kyoani show (Chuunibyou is up there too, but probably a little behind these two?). LS has a lot of flaws to it. I dunno if Id like it as much if I watched it today, though Id probably get more of the references, so thatd be a bonus. I didnt like the post-credits Lucky Channel sequences much, Kagami can be a bit of a buzzkill, and some early sequences arent that funny. But its strengths are incredible. Lots of jokes are based on references, but theyre presented in a way that theyre funny regardless (particularly the anime store manager. I basically burst out laughing every time he appeared, despite never seeing the series hes based on). And even more importantly, Konata is awesome. She might be my favorite character in any comedy series? Shes close, if not. She feels super relatable, but in an awesome confident way that makes her admirable too. Her obsession with nerdy and naughty stuff is always awesome, and she drives basically all the best plots of the show. Her interactions with the rest of the cast are highly entertaining. Shes the funniest main character on the show, too. Lucky Stars basically the Konata show to me, and I really wish wed gotten more of it (the OVA was super great and Im sad it wasnt an S2).

https://myanimelist.cdn-dena.com/images/anime/1813/93525l.jpg
@TexWolf_1729

This is probably a few spots too high, but eh, its a great show. It basically does what all comedy series want to do by having a solid cast of characters and a good emotional core behind it. Its really difficult to be funny all the time, so ideally, the cast and writing should be good enough that the show is enjoyable to watch even when youre not watching. Hinamatsuri definitely achieves that and manages to have a lot of nice heartwarming moments too. It basically works in whatever mode its in. The animation and presentation being awesome doesnt hurt things, of course. Every episode is basically full of entertainment in varying ways. And of course, the cast is top tier. Hina is the best, Hitomi is full of great comedy, and Anzu provides some nice emotional moments (though I didnt enjoy her scenes as much as the other two). Nittas awesome too. Manages to be just as silly as the aliens, most of the time. And the other supporting cast members are generally excellent as well. I believe this is my #2 2018 show on this list, and its a great one.
